Don't know bout top 100 or 200 players but there are some future players at the borderline of 1000 ATP that I know started from 10-12.

    Can't remember names, sorry.

Simon Larose a former Canadian player started playing at 11. His highest rank was 189 and he beat Kuerten once when Kuerten was ranked 12th. Other than that I can't think of anyone in the top 50 who might have started that late.

I think Svetlana Kuznetsova started at a similar age, around 11 or 12 - her family have a cycling background.

Simon Larose. Didn't he play for Georgia, or Mississippi? I have a video somewhere of him.

Just from these few comments, it doesn't sound very promising.

Weren't they already living in a car by the time she was 12?

If you mean top 200 pro, very doubtful any of them FIRST TOUCHED A RACKET after 10. If they played soccer AND tennis but committed to tennis full time at 12 or 14 or whenever, that's different.

You consider starting at age 6 late?

He decided to concentrate full time on tennis at age 12 but he already had been playing for 6 years along with other sports most notably baseball.

Actually she started at age 10 which is pretty late for a top level pro.

She won the US National 12 and unders within 2 years of starting. She made her pro debut 4 years later after taking up tennis.

Mac Attack himself was 11 when he started, 'over the hill' as he says.

You are mistaken. :)It doesn't take that long to look this stuff up. On his own website Rios writes he started at the age of 9.

Michael Stich started at the age of 6 according to his BBC biography.

Hyung Taik Lee started playing tennis when he was about 10~11 years old.

It's pretty uncommon in Korea to have your children involved in sports when they are 5~8 years old...

Waiting until 12 to concentrate full time on one sport is what interested me. A lot of pros played other sports like baseball (Courier) or soccer but started to focus on one around 10 or so.

Get started now, the earlier the better.

The top pro that I heard beat the odds was Cedric Pioline who supposedly started at 17. I suspect he had played earlier but did not take it seriously until 17, but I am not positive. Either way, 17 is typically way too late to take it seriously unless you are incredibly gifted.

Ummm...Mary Pierce won the USTA 12's when she was 12.

Can we start posting sources, not just speculation?

This reminds me of when someone said Hewitt started at 16. Winning ATP tournaments and beating Agassi that is!!
