So each of the top 4 players took a slam this year

    1 Federer -Wimby
    2 Djokovic - AO
    3 Murray - USO
    4 Nadal - RG

Pretty interesting, is it good for tennis? I'd have preferred Murray to retire slamless but I guess it made for an interesting situation. Has this ever happened before?

    Yes, in 2003.

    AO - Agassi
    RG - Ferrero
    Wimby - Federer
    USO - Roddick

The YE rankings that year were 1) Roddick 2) Federer 3) Ferrero 4) Agassi

    1998
    1. davenport - us open
    2. hingis - australian open
    3. novotna - wimbledon
    4. sanchez-vicario - french open

It has happened three times on the men's side since 1990: 1991, 2003, 2012.

why? in 2003 he was french open champion and us open runner up. he won some masters series events too. he was ranked no.1 for a few weeks that year. at that time, people thought he'd be part of a three-way rivalry with federer and roddick. they thought he'd be the clay king, while roddick would get most of his results on grass and hard, with federer winning frequently enough on all surfaces to keep things interesting. he had a good head-to-head record against federer at that point, even beating him indoors that year.
