Allergies

My allergies have gone crazy this spring. I can barely survive a match out there and I am in great shape. Today I blew my nose so many times during changeovers that it began to bleed badly. I have tried just about every anti-histamine, claritin, zyrtec, allegra and none of them help at all. I have also tried nasal sprays which did not help. What can I do, I am tired of the doc prescribing a new medicine that doesn't help.

Switch to homeopathy - slower acting but it attacks the actual cause of the problem, not the symptoms. And stay away from the courts. You could spread it to innocent others.

Try gene replacement therapy or a gas mask...

FYI, allergies are typically not contagious...

I tried playing on Claritin about 4 weeks ago. Total disaster. I was standing and watching balls fly by 3 feet away. No balance, no reactions. I'd rather suffer with the allergies than be so drugged up. Never again....

Have you tried NasalCrom? I tried it this past spring, not expecting much, but was surprised how effective it was. No side-effects, but you have to re-spray it every 3-4 hours.

Oh,I had a problem with allergies too,but luckily this year I am much better..What your doctor told you that it triggers it?Dust, pollen?

Really,i don't think there is much you can do..:( You should take the drugs that your doctor says and do eh..conservative therapy..I mean not to expose yourself to the triggering substance..:(

If you don't mind can you answer some questions I have?Do you live in a rural area or not?And when you were a small kid were you exposed a lot to eh..nature?I mean what you could find for example in a field..Dung,pollen..

I know it may sound ridiculous but I ask that because of a study I've read.
Thanx in advance and I hope you get better.:|

The only thing being spread is misinformation. As alluded to above, coughing and sneezing related to allergies spreads nothing of consequence to others. People typically all have pretty much the same bacterial flora, unless they're ill with an infection

Thanks for clearing that up. May be I'm just a hypochondriac - as soon as I see someone sick I start feeling sick myself :)

A couple of ideas: first, all of the new antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec etc are actually inferior to good old fashioned, OTC Benedryl as antihistamines. The reason they were invented was because they make you less drowsy.

Second, which symptom is bothering you more, watery eyes and sneezing, or stuffiness? Antihistamines will lessen the pollen's ability to cause the symptom, but do not actually treat the symptom.

I played yesterday 15 hours after taking 24 hour Claritin (the type with the nasal decongestant included) and I felt dopey the first set. Lotradine only Claritin doesn't effect my playing. For me the best thing is not to take anything before a match. I may be stuffed up before playing but once I start, I clear up. You may want to try a silk face mask at icanbreathe.com I use it when mowing the lawn and its fairly unobtrusive but you will look like a freak.

I have pretty bad pollen-based allergies, and used to pop about a dozen Allerest a day. I found that Claritin wouldn't do it for me either, but if I take a Claritin in the morning, I can get by with taking a half-dose of Allerest two or three times a day. I've had no bad effects from mixing these two medicines.

For as long as I can remember, I've been out of commision in June. Always thought I just picked up a summer cold... That summer cold had a way of turning into bronchitis and/or a bad sinus infection.

I finally was properly tested and was found to have a significant grass allergy along with some less significant outdoor allergies - makes perfect sense. I'm taking zyrtec and a nose spray, although I had to try several to find one that worked. During the grass season, I also use Astelin which is an antihistamine nose spray. I HATE taking medicine, but it sure beats the heck out of getting sick.

My husband has worse allergies than mine but he's very undisciplined about taking his allergy medicine. He basically waits until he feels awful, then takes a zyrtec and expects to feel great. He has a lot of trouble with his eyes whenever the trees come out - doctor was able to give him prescription eyedrops that really helped him - patanol? That doesn't sound quite right. Let me know if your eyes are making you nuts and I will hunt down those eyedrops.

For me, Allegra is the magic bullet. Not Allegra D, which I find to drying. But it is likely a different remedy for everyone. You just have to be careful that it doesn't turn into bronchitis or a serious sinus infection, as slewisoh says. Most GP's have a hard time diagnosing these things and treat them wrong or not long enough, so they never really go away. Just experiment and find something that works for you.

I found Visine A.C. eyedrops effective for relieving my eye allergy symptoms. Over the counter and cheap.

Over suggestions I'll offer:

Buy HEPA air filtration unit(s), I use these instead of fans to move air around my non-airconditioned house.

Control humidity in your dwelling - too dry is bad for the eyes, nasal and sinus membranes and too moist breeds mold and dust mites.

Lastly, take your workouts and exercise indoors during allergy season, my bad months are May (trees) and September (ragweed). Or, schedule exercise at a better time - I run very early in the morning when the winds are calm and the dust and whatever haven't gotten stirred up yet.
