I read in a newspaper that Nadal's win over Berdych was his fiftieth 5-setter on clay, of which he has won a total of forty nine.

    Quite an amazing performance!

Hes just really lucky he didn't meet Soderling in all of those. Otherwise he would be 0/50

Soderling beat him in 4 sets, not 5.

So who beat him in that 1/50 5-setters?

OP wasn't clear. Nadal has won 49 of the 50 Best of 5 set matches he's played on clay.

If anyone in the history of tennis played 50 five set matches on clay, they'd probably be in a wheelchair.

Nadal's only played 2 five setters on clay I think.

Er, he beat Soderling in Rome last year on clay IIRC 6-1, 6-0.

The defeat at the FO seems rather an accident de parcours to me. He could have taken the fourth and won in five.

Soderling is a guy that hits brilliant high risk shots or clumsily misses. Difficult to implement a strategy against him as Davydenko said last weak when asked whom he would prefer to meet in the WTF final.

Thanks for the specification. I was indeed not clear in the OP.

It means the best of five sets. Soderling is the guy who beat his record. Nadal won 49 matches with either 3,4,5 sets.

Correct. Those were his victories in the 2005 and 2006 Rome Masters finals, over Coria and Federer respectively.

He's never lost a 5 set match and only lost one best out of 5 set match.

    What a beast

Amazing, and his only loss was due to injury!

Amazing achievement either way but I iniatially taught that nadal has grinded out 49 wins in actual 5 set matches . I was about to declare Nadal the new GOAT!
