In 1980 Vilas was playing really well in the tournaments before Roland Garros. He had played very good in Monte Carlo, where Borg beat him in the final. Then in the Nations Cup, he finally could beat Borg (BTW, I would love to see images of that match to see how it was, where can I get the match?) After that, he lost the final in Hamburg against Solomon and won Roma against Noah. Unfortunately, he had serious physical problems after the third round at Roland Garros, and lost to Solomon in the quarterfinals (Guillermo was not completely recovered) I don´t know if Harold would have won anyway, as in Hamburg. I read that in the Nations Cup Vilas had used a different tactic against Borg, doing many strong shots to the lines, and played awesome. But also Borg was perhaps overconfident, he said something like that. Well, I would have liked that semifinal. What do you think would have happened?

This is the Vilas activity in 1980:

Very good question. Vilas beated Borg in Dusseldorf a few days before the French, playing very well. If he wasn't sick during the French, he beated Solomon, and maybe, for the first time, he could beat Borg in Paris.

i think borg would have won comfortably:),he crushed vilas in monte carlo 6-1 6-0 6-2 i think or very similar and whilst vilas won the final set 6-1 against bjorn in nations cup borg upped his level dramatically at french open that year and won without losing a single set in fact in his last 3 matches against solomon, barazutti and vitas he only lost a combined total of 17 games winning i think 6-2 6-2 6-0 ,6-3 6-3 6-0 and 6-4 6-1 6-2

Yes, but Monte-Carlo was before Nations Cup. So, Vilas won the last match against Borg. And I saw the video of the 3d set in Dusseldorf, Borg played very seriously and didn't give the match to Vilas. Vilas played very good, patient but coming sometimes to the net.

That is why Vilas won. He didn't try to beat Borg at his own game like he had done so many times before, but came to the net at opportune times and mixed up his play very well.

It would be very hard to see Vilas beating on Borg in a genuinely big match on clay

Vilas's only wins over Borg on clay were at BA in 1973, when a 17 year old Borg was leading in Vilas's home turf and had to retire after colliding with the umpire's chair, and that Nations Cup match which while not being meaningless was hardly a big stage either.

I agree that Borg's form improved dramatically between the Nations Cup and the French as well. With him playing that well, Vilas would have had a tough time avoiding a straight sets defeat.

I would have liked to see Vilas trying to do the same tactic that in the Nations Cup against Borg. But I too think Borg would have won. I imagine a 6-3 6-1 6-2 or something like that.

Vilas WO Orantes in a very controversial decision in the 4 th round. He did not show at the first call until 45 minutes or so, and the rules was you were disqualified. The RG executive comittee decided to walk over the rules and call it again. It was a big scandal back then.It might not be Guillermo´s fault, but he should have been K:O from the event.Solomon made justice in the QF.

Orantes would have been far tougher for Borg.Aged 32, in 1981Geneva tournament, I think he baggeled the swede in one set of the final, albeit Borg won the title.

Hypothetical French Open semi final between Borg and Vilas 1980, hard to see anything other than a comprehensive Borg win. Bjorn was in very good form that tournament. Peak Borg.
