I remember when he was an intense top junior all the way up to the 16s and then he dropped like a stone in the 18s losing 1st rounds everywhere. I heard he then left tennis for football as it's hard to keep playing when kids you use to destroy start beating you. Now I'm surprised to see him playing #2 for D-I Maryland after being away from tennis a few years.

don't know anything about magee - but this reminds me of andy orban's junior career trajectory, and he ended up playing for maryland as well

maybe ultra-talented burnouts are their specialty

edit: actually, after taking a quick review of some of orban's results, perhaps his burnout started more around the time he started college, so maybe this isn't the best comparison

His father died when he was 15ish, and he lost interest in tennis after that, so he found football and became really good at that. That's all I know, but it doesn't sound like everyone got better than him, more that his father was a reason that he loved tennis.

He announced before his senior year that he would concentrate on football, where he was a top quarterback. Went to UCLA for a year, but the depth chart was loaded at QB, and he is not quite six feet tall, making it tough. Transferred to Maryland to resume tennis.

It's quite a feat to leave competition tennis for a few years and come back and play #2 at D-I.
