Are there players that string their own rackets instead of taking them to special racket customizing services?

Don't know about more recent pros, but I've read that Hingis and Hrbaty used to travel with dropweights and they or someone in their group would string their rackets in their hotel rooms.

I remember reading that Dominik Hrbaty and Martina Hingis traveled with dropweight machines and did their own racquets.

I think on higher levels you will not find that many players that do it althought most of them sure have an idea of how to do it. However on the lower levels - Challengers and Futures - you will find many that do it, to save and to make some money. I actually know a kid who is like 400 in the world that does it.

I heard Donald Young does, since he has so much off-time always losing early matches.

no, he tells the racket to string itself, and the racket complies.

nadal strings his racket with a machine that looks very much like a Babolat Star 5 but it's really an Eagnas painted to look like one.

A UK player, Chris Eaton had a bit of a run at Wimby a couple of years ago. I remember watching a news item about the guy where he said that he strings his own rackets because he couldn't afford a stringer to go through his rackets before every match.

This is the sharp end of the game, what many young players on this board aspire to. I'm sure Chris Eaton isn't the only struggling pro to do this. Kind of takes the shine off the profession a little doesn't it?

What's so wrong about stringing your own rackets? If you aren't in the top 70, you're not covering expenses first class, so you have to string.
And this silly talk about stringers...... some say it's rare a stringer can even serve a tennis ball.
I happen to know plenty of stringers who serve well over 130 mph. It's just that the rest of their game sucks, so they string rackets for money instead of win tourneys.
And even higher level players look for deals on string jobs. Not saying the top 20, but below that, a dollar saved, which can amount to $300 per tourney, does make a bit of difference.
