I feel like most players have progressed to at least a hybrid with a multi or poly. I ran out of my MSV Focus Hex tonight so I had to go with full gosen og sheep 17 at 58 and I was surprised with how well it played. I'm think about taking a step back in time and just stick full syn. Can any users of full syn shed some more light on the subject?

Be warry of that og sheep 17. It's nice and crisp when fresh but I find that in a full job it quickly becomes quite mushy and looses much of its spin potential.

I've actually been in the exact same situation as you.

i'm no 4.5, i'm a lowly 3.5, but having played for months with full SPPP, and having ran out of it from the reel, i ended up with a full bed of PSGD in my BLX 90. it took some time getting used to the extra pop, but it was surprisingly sweet.

i liked it so much i'm considering getting a reel of Gosen 16 gauge (i prefer it to PSGD) to save on money, since i dont break strings too often. a set of that will last me about 1-2 weeks or so, not bad for 17 jobs out of a reel that's thirty bucks.. lol

Same as Cup8489. I'm about a 3.0-3.5, and a bunch of friends are using the hybrids, but I stick with the full syn gut. Actually, I may like the multis more.

I'm using full gosen 17 in my aerogel200s since last Monday at 22/21kgs and i really like it. I already orderer another reel. I can smack the ball and still keep it in. I'm also having nice spin potencial in my kick serves and the added touch and feel totally make it worth.

I'm restringing two racquets every week.. and by this price i couldn't care less ;)

Not with the advent of poly. Too much playability to give up by going back to syn gut.

This is what I'm worried about. I'll probably go back to a hybrid. Maybe a syn gut main/Poly cross to keep some of the syn gut feel. I love full poly but apparently my elbow has no idea I do... Any suggestions? I use A YT Rad Pro. Medium compact strokes, Semi-western, Big First serve but looking for more out of my second serve. Thanks guys.

There are blended strings out there--Tecnifibre's Promix (poly with multifilament construction), Prince's Lightning Power (poly/nylon with a springier wrap) and Volkl's V-Fuse (with natural gut); try one of 'em....

i'm a 5.0, i use og sheep 16 on k90.....it's dirt cheap...plays ok, much more arm friendly than poly....that's why i use it....but only lasts 1-2hr at best...hence i am constantly on my string machine :)

    Hi,

I am not 4.5 +... a little lower.. but have used a full OG 17 in the past and still use it as a main string in a hybrid set-up. It playes a bit crisp over 60.. and is prone to breaking with big hitters. If you string @ 58.. you should get great feel and power.. comfort and by the time the string starts to play a bit soft it will pop in most cases. A reel can be had for $29.99 online. Best price performance string on the market IMHO. I bet if you did a poll on TT.. many stringers would have a reel in their stock.. I have had a reel for the last 5 years. If I was going to go full mulit.. the Max Touch seems to be the current price performance fav here. http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=324132

    Good luck in your quest..

I just switched from full Gosen OG Sheep 16 to 17. Full setup at 55 lbs(middle of range) for my Prince Tour Diablo Tour Mid 93s.

I cannot discern the difference between the 16 or 17. But it plays well and I like it a lot.

Remember that tennis and most things in life are a personal experience. What you like will not be exactly what others like. So go with what you like and don't be swayed with what others tell you.

Try it out. If you like it, then go with it. If not, then move on.

I've got a buddy of mine I string rackets for who simply refuses to use a hybrid. He's a 4.5 and played college tennis. He's committed to Prince Synthetic Gut w/Duraflex. He says he never was able to feel the ball with a hybrid. I've tried to tell him they're much different than when he tried them several years ago, but I can't convince him otherwise.

I'm a 4.5+ and I used full synthetic gut for almost a year (Gamma and PSGD). A 5.0 guy I used to hit with used only PSGD.

I dont think you should use the word "progressed". Nadal ,Henin and a bunch of other top pros dont use hybrids. You seem to like the feedback OG sheep is giving you. Much like Jim Courier back in the day. If you play well with it your lucky since its not that expensive.

I play with a group of guys rated from 4.5 - 5.5 and everyone has at least a poly in the mains(like me) or crosses while others have gone full poly. I can play reasonably well using syngut but that extra 5%-10% dipping topspin (that lets the ball land just inside the line) just wasn't there so I so I had to go back to using poly.

Spin is addictive. Control without spin is like Nadal without spin.

If you have pain try a hybrid of Topspin Cyberflash and Gosen OG 17. I personaly use OG 16 because it retains tension better but either one should provide a nice soft feeling.

It doesnt' really matter if you use the sheep in the mains or the crosses. Combined with the Cyberflash it makes for a very arm friendly setup. My shoulder thanks me for it.

Is it similar to Big Ace Micro or Big Ace for that matter? I own a reel of BAM but it's just to thin and I can barely even get a match out of it but I love the feel I get from it.

I actually prefer the Cyberflash to BAM in terms of feel and performance, it also lasts longer.

I also found that BAM looses tension very quickly. The Cyberflash also grips the ball better than BAM and gives more spin. I found BAM comfortable overall but inconsistent. By that I mean that some shots would have spin while others would slide off the racquet with no spin whatsoever. I remember thinking that BAM was "slippery".

Most college players are in the 4.5-5.5 range, I always wonder about overestimation when I see so many recreational players rate themselves at 4.5 or 5.0...

Anyways, to the OP, I used either full syn gut or full multi when I played college (several years ago), I had a third backup racket strung with a Kevlar/syn gut hybrid, one guy on the team used a Gut/Multi Hybrid, and the rest used whatever syn gut they could get their hands on, cheap. The Multi felt better to me but didn't make me play any better than plain syn gut. Currently I use full syn gut. I think a lot of players are using Poly because it is trendy and not because they actually need it, then look down on syn gut for whatever reason. If they use it because they break strings often, it helps with spin, or it actually feels good to them, then cool, use whatever you want. But there's nothing wrong with full syn gut.

I think "progessed" (over syn gut) is probably not the right word. When you play someone really good I really don't think anyone would ask them after a match what string type (or racket) they are using.

I think that is the biggest downside. It's probably a little easier for people with denser patterns, but I really rather not string so often. I haven't tried Liberty yet on my PSLs. I should string one up and see how long it lasts.

Im a 4.5 recreational player, (have been rated) and I use Luxilon ALU Power Rough, no hybrids, or natural gut. I love Luxilon string, despite what Ive heard some say about it, I dont feel you lose playability after several hours, it feels the same as it did when I first strung my racquets. Its very stiff string, needs to be stretched before you string with it, the durability is awesome though.

I'm a 4.0 using 16 x 18 95 head frames these days. I've tried every string and hybrid combination you can think of and in the end have found that a full Gosen SM 17 job works great. Good spin, good comfort, good arm protection. I agree it needs to be replaced more frequently, but at less than $2 a string job ( I do my own) its no big deal. I have 3 matched racquets so I just rotate them to get max play time out the string. I will caveat that I hit mainly flat, using topspin occasionally.

    Hey Netman,

I have 5 frames that I rotate...one us always being used as an "experiment" frame. I use the OG 17 in the mains and with the rotation..get max play time out of the frame. Like you..I hit mainly flat, using topspin occasionally. I break strings due to my serve with which I do use quite a bit of spin and pace. I also agree that you get better an average spin, good comfort and good arm protection. Yes.. and since I do my own stringing... $2.00 a string job.. when I hybrid with Ashaway Liberty... even less..:)

Thanks. I think I might go with this poly. I played great today with my gosen but I felt like i was missing something with my shots and I wouldn't mind putting some poly on the cross. Any suggestions on what tension I should use on the main/cross?

    Syngut decreases spin about 10%?
    Is that a fair statistic?

When I hybrid and I want a softer stringbed I go 1-3lbs less on the crosses than the mains. If you want a harder feel use the same tension or you could even go higher.

Cyberflash is quite soft, so I'd first go no more than 2lbs lower on the crosses and then see how that feels.

    It sounds believable.
Thanks man, I usually go around 58 mains and 56 cross with my Gosen/MSV Hybrid. I think i'll try this tension or possibly add a pound or two. Can anyone give me a small comparison of Cyber Flash 1.25 and MSV focus hex 1.18? (Softness/stiffness, Spin Potential, Durability, Tension maintenance etc...)

If he stretches it before hand and might string tight so he probably starts with almost dead luxilon and likes it that way

I think he meant it starts dead if you prestretch and string tight with a poly. I'd agree with that in general.

Well, the USTA thinks I'm a 4.5, and I will jump on the bandwagon about the Cyberflash/OG Sheep 17 hybrid, although I use the synthetic in the mains and am having good results.

At the moment, I'm looking for a full poly setup. Full synthetic is just a little too much power and not enough spin or control, even if I like the way it feels.

    Sometimes.

Right now I have two Aerogel 200s, one with a poly/multi hybrid, one with full Prince Syn Gut Duraflex. The syn gut plays great.

I generally use poly or poly hybrid though.

I string for a few solid 4.5s that use psgd 17 exclusively.
