I dislike both players but I'm rooting for Hewitt simply because his decline was due to injuries not of his own making, not simply because he couldn't put down the donuts and be bothered to train.

Mmmm, try typing their Shanghai 2005 match into youtube and then come back and actually genuinely defend that statement. You are twisted. And if you want to begin comparing Safin's record against Federer with Nalbandian's record against Federer, then I suggest you maybe have a quick look at the head to head's before you post your crap. 10-2 Federer over Safin, 10-8 Federer over Nalbandian. End of.

I happen to agree with this. I don't know why some think Nalbandian was or is so great. If he was so great, he would have won slams. If this, if that, blah, blah, blah. It means nothing. Results are the only thing that matter.

Re Hewitt, I think he is an underrated player. Fast as heck and gets to everything and plays a great defensive game. He looks pretty good lately too so I am going to go with Hewitt for the win in this match with Nalbandian.

Nalby beat prime Federer indoors twice and he pretty much destroyed Nadal in the same events.

So what? The point is Nalbandian was not able to destroy Federer or Nadal consistently. Any top player can have token good days and beat any other top player. It is overall consistency that matters.

Nadal is easily beatable indoors, especialy pre 2008. Try having Nalbandian play Nadal on clay or grass, or even outdoor hard courts today, and see what happens. The Federer wins were nice but would you say that was Federer playing the tennis of his life, LOL! It was just a pretty good or so so Federer against Nalbandian playing the tennis of his life. Now both playing the tennis of your life, especialy on any surface other than indoors (Nalbandian's best by far) and Federer destroys Nalbandian.

He doesn't have his head all the way in the match. I think he knows the crowd is against him, and I don't think he expected Lleyton to be so quick.

Also, he was only a finalist last week, while Lleyton won his tournament.

I think Lleyton is the stronger in the head of the two of them.

Holmes: Try as I do, I cannot seem to like Hewitt's personality... he annoys me when he started calling Pascal Maria the worst umpire he's ever known, and even more so with the glaring looks. As unbiased as I'd like to be in this one, I do hope Nalbandian takes the next 2 sets...

after that 2-0 lead he had in the third, nalbandian went away and never looked back. I can see he has some excessive fat around the waist again.

Holmes: Hewitt, just play the game and stop moaning. Let your racquet do the talking, as it is doing successfully. With much regret I add...

I'm rarely rooting for Hewitt but somehow I can't stand Nalbandian lately. He's full of talent, but he has no work-mentality. Last Saturday in Auckland was the worst I've seen him - dominating Ferrer in the first set and still managing to lose it, and just tanks the second.

    He's not worthy of R2.

3 pages? Three pages? For a first round match between an Aussie favourite and a forum favourite, that looks like it could go to 5 sets?

Someone change the thread title to Rafa vs Roger, quick!

Anyway, Nalbandian breaks and holds, back on serve 8)

    [EDIT]

    Ahem, now 4 pages...

Holmes: For once we disagree Mortifier!

Is it me, or is Hewitt not capable of playing a short match in the early rounds of the AO, later at night? :)
