If Tomic takes this set, it's only because of the double faults

Doesn't Brands get annoyed by gifting freebies?

Damn I'm really enjoying Brands game. Shame he got broken there. Does anyone have any background info on him? How old is he? What's his ranking been like?

    And Tomic is a ******.

I knew Tomic would break as soon as Brands had trouble getting out of the game.

    Bernie breaks!

Good stuff. With a bit of luck, this match could take us up to the Sexi v Davy start time.

Wasn't Brands the guy who said he didn't want to beat Fed at the FO couple of years ago?

Wait, do you actually like Tomic? If you don't mind me asking, why? His game? Surely not because of his personality :-|

Who says Federer will make it to 3rd round  In the meantime Tomic shouldn't lose to Brands. Come on Bernie!

Davydenko will defeat himself, he hardly needs Federer for that. Federer will make it to the third round, and if Tomic does then he did it losing at least one set and almost another to rank 120 in the world qualifier Daniel Brands

Tomic has a very distinctive style, both game and personality. One of the young guys will have to break through eventually. I fancy Tomic to possibly be the one rather than overrated Dimitrov at this point.

You have got to be kidding me.

Funny you like Tomic so much but hate Fed because you think he's arrogant. Tomic is a hundred times worse with his arrogance than Fed ever has been.

Tomic has been surprisingly composed this match. Only that *****y comment to the umpire and otherwise very little emotion, positive or negative. Maybe like 3 fist pumps.

Maybe he is maturing... a little.

I think he can be. But I think Tomic needs to add some topspin to his game. And his second serve is very sub-par at the tour level.

I haven't ever seen Brands play before but I'm liking his game. Tomic seems to have improved from when I saw him last, but his failure/unwillingness to do much of anything with Brands's serve is really hurting him.

Not impressed with his game or "style" in today's match. No attempt to dictate points, just a waiting game for errors.

The Tomic that showed up to this match is so far absolutely no threat to Federer, but we've seen Bernie playing better than this.

    Here's the translation:

"I want Tomic to beat Federer and since he's more capable of doing so than Brands I want Tomic to win today. Btw, if possible, I would also want Federer to lose to Davydenko today a match I will obviously watch until Davydenko gets broken (which is like 7 minutes total)

I hate Federer with all my heart and because Dimitrov plays like him I hate him too. I don't care about Tomic or at least wouldn't care about him if he was in a different section of the draw.

Obviously I had to mention Dimitrov as the one who WON'T break it to the top while ignoring the likes of Raonic and Janowicz at the same time which proves how biased I am"

Can anyone enlighten me how this Tomic will ever sneak a set off Federer, let alone beat him in a Bo5 format?

He's half-asleep right now, barely shuffling his feet.

    Almost like he's a spectator.

Federer indeed WAS arrogant a few years back but when he was winning 3 majors a year for fun and barely lost a match in a season so his arrogance was perfectly understandable.

Tomic now just 2 sets away from getting to the next round. Federer is toast  (If he survives Davy, that is).

I like Tomic and I feel Brands is the kind of guy he should beat especially at AO. I feel it would be a disappointing counterperf at this point in his career not to. Unlike you, I am not obsessed with Fed.

I think it's the way Tomic times the hitting of ground stroke.

He is a rare talent in that regard. But have no idea how a 6'5" guy hit that kind of serve.

A lot of Fed haters have turned Tomic fans ever since the draw came out. Why, even NSK is showing signs of becoming TSK ;-)

Tomic's "bunt" volley a few games ago and that weird casual & weak forehand slice off a 2nd serve return are indications of crazy lack of either caring or focus. Is he just experimenting? (in a close match at a Grand Slam!)

Let me get this straight. So you hate Federer for his style and arrogance but you like Tomic despite him being arrogant (without backing it up with results unlike Fed) and playing with variety (like Federer).

Unless you want to make a case for Federer having no variety, then please do so. Let us have a laugh.

True, Tomic has game. However, wouldn't you say that Tomic's variety stings a lot more on a fast pace grasscourt rather than the AO courts?

This match is a perfect example of why Tomic is dreaming if he thinks he'll ever be in the top echelon of players. His movement is worse than many club level players and his hustle is barely evident at all.

In the first two sets alone he lost about 20 points because he was too casual with his movement.

So is his 1st serve. And the movement. And the forehand.

He has absolutely nothing on Federer.
