Yeah except for the fact that Federer had to travel halfway around the world and had just come off one of the most disappointing losses in his career, and it was on the worst grass imaginable, and Federer still won. How about looking at a match like last year's AO. That will give you a better indication of what will happen if they play here.

Brands is doing a great job on his service games but not nearly enough when returning.

Wow, Brands is 20-0 on service points in this set so far.

Tomic is the future. Fed is the past. Fed has bored me to death for years with his 0 personality, his lackluster game, his over-seriousness and smugness. Fed is not bad ass at all, he's pompous. Tomic is interesting. And I happen to believe he's talented. You don't agree? Too bad. This is my opinion and I intend to stick to it.

Eh, ESPN.Tomic and Brands are going down to the wire in set 3 after splitting the first two tight sets...Do we really need to watch Wozniacki destroy a 16 year old?

The only one who's the past is Nadal.

What exactly makes Tomic interesting? His bad attitude? His big mouth? His arrogance? His ability to get in trouble with the law? His equally big mouthed father? Just what exactly is it about him that sends you?

I think we can make that call now. It's denial that isn't letting you see what's really going on.

Definition of lackluster: lacking excitement, lacking energy, enthusiasm or passion. Perfect description for Fed who has about as much warmth as a dead fish.

And what if Nadal still say he's not ready to comeback, like he's been saying for 20th times? Waif again? No way.

Hilarious. If it was Seppi vs Brands with the winner playing Federer next you'd say that you have always loved Seppi's exciting game, his passion and determination.

No I wouldn't! Check AO general thread. I wrote about Tomic being a force at AO and I wrote about Tomic's potential as a top player (during Sydney) BEFORE the AO draw was released. I don't flip flop. I haven't flipped flopped about Rafa and Djoko and I won't about Tomic either.

Hoping Duckworth wins. The announcer in the Tomic match said all eyes are on Tomic because all the other Australians have been eliminated after Duckworth's loss earlier...

Well it's still pretty funny that you like Tomic for the very same things you hate Federer for.

Er maybe we'll just have to agree to disagree then because I don't see Tomic as a "baby Fed" or "Fed copycat" in any way.

The only thing that's impressive about Tomic's game is his serve, and just his first serve at that. He has good feel for different kinds of shots, but seems very inconsistent with them. His return of serve is pretty subpar.

The athleticism on display here is abysmal. Both players are moving very slugishly with sloppy unmotivated unconvincing footwork. I predict the winner of Fed-Davydenko (fed obviously but who knows...) will make short work of either Brands or Tomic in 3 easy sets.

Yeah sure. That's the part of his game he needs to work on the most. (As for consistency, it comes with experience and confidence).

Oh don't get me wrong, Tomic has a ton of potential, as he has greater natural tennis feel than most people on the tour, easily. And with his improved serve, I can easily see him becoming a force to reckon with. He really has to develop a stronger ground game, though.

it's kind of funny teh folk complaining about this match, it is exactly the boring, big serving, first strike tennis they are always hankering for..

Crazy. Poor pretty boy Brands -- looks like he's never had to fight for anything in his life.
Well, if he wants it, he'll have to dig in now ...

Brands has been fighting pretty well this entire match. Great composure throughout. 5 match points saved!

I said that's what he looked like. I'm rooting for him. I think he just underestimated how much Tomic wants it, and how hard the crowd was going to root for the green and gold.
