It's a damn shame Tomic couldn't be playing Djokovic or Ferrer next, Federer is just a nightmare matchup for him. With a better draw Tomic could have gone pretty far.

the very first sentence of his on court interview with courier

he mentioned it later on too.

When asked about his preference on who to play next he said: Davydenko "laughs" but anyone can have their day as Daniel did today.

So now we know what he thinks of Brands.

Tomic was... humble? Gave a lot of credit to Federer and Brands. Though a few backhanded comments about how Brands was having a career day today...

Hated how Courier got all stupid at the end when he said the word ass. Gimme a break! Seriously.

Tomic showed in this match why he's got no chance of being a top 5 player. Until he learns to hustle and can move a lot better he's just going to be fodder for the top guys most of the time.

He's got time to improve but, to me, he seems to still have the top junior mentality where it hasn't fully sunken in yet that he wont get to the top by junk-balling.

Bad call in the 2nd set saved the day for Tomic. Really a terrible call. Congratulations to Brands for battling the junk baller, the bad calls and the pro-Tomic crowd.

Once again for the 3rd time Tomic commented about insisting Federer needing to make it to the next round (aka dont call Fed a shoe in) makes me laugh.

It all originated back 3-4 days ago when Tomic didn't like when Federer made a slight mention in a long interview with australian reporters who brought up Tomic, and Fed made the comment about Tomic being high off his win and needed to focus on getting through his rounds.

On a different day in different conditions Tomic might have lost to this 120 ranked player.

I didn't catch it exactly either, but it was something like "Well I've gotten my ass handed to me both times (when playing Federer, responding to Courier's question.) Not exactly true though since their DC match was pretty close.

He also said that he'd rather play Davydenko (half-joking), and you can't blame him for that.

Courier asked him "You played Federer twice last year, what did you learn from those matches?"

    to which Tomic replied

"Well, I got my @ss kicked."

to which Courier quickly replied with the "We're on Network TV, not Cable" comment.

I'm glad he's willing to joke like that and show a degree of humbleness. Really, who wants some arrogant selfish douchbag ala Barry Bonds being an ambassador for the sport and rolemodel for kids. When Courier asked the question jokingly i got worried for a second he might say he "didn't care".

Ass is fine on local tv, so Courier imported a somewhat foreign sensitivity there.

I think the original post by PCXL was a veiled shot at Federer anyway so you're not doing anything new. That's why I responded in kind. If it wasn't I apologize, but I took it that way. Unless it was actually a shot at Barry Bonds, but I don't believe that @sshole was ever really a role model for kids.

Did Tomic really say that about Brands? Wow, I can't believe I'm saying this but I want Fed to smoke him even more than I already did. I didn't think that was possible XD.

Sounds about comparable to the dozens of Federer fans here who actively root against their own blessed beloved in semifinals (particularly if Federer is playing Djokovic in said semifinal) if Nadal is waiting in the final.

neither nadal nor federer played in this match... read the thread title.. argue about your avatars elsewhere please.

brands was great in this match. showed how tomic isn't ready to face an aggressive serve and volley or attacking type game. he barely made it through, but acts like he was dominant. we'll see what happens to him next match...

Agreed - he does have good hands and reads the game very well, but his movement is still clumsy. Brands really troubled him - another powerful player with a bit more experience surely would've won it...

    barely made it through?

he didn't face a break point, did he?

A week ago everyone was hyping Brands as the power tennis Messiah, now Tomic beats him so he's actually rubbish?

break point? he lost the first set.

did you watch the same match that I did? it was a close 4 set match with three of the four sets ending in tie breaks and the other one ending (7-5). that is a pretty close match in my book.

ultimately he kept it together an won fair and square. i'm not taking that away from him, but it was far from an emphatic performance. i never commented about brands before the match (negatively or positively) so i don't know what hype you're on about. brands actually played very well in this match, but tomic was better... marginally so as the scoreline and the match attest.
