Hewwitt's is the most impressive and statistically meaningful because of its size. Fererro's is good, too.

IMO, you're reading too much into it. The best players are rarely taken to 5 sets. They can finish their opponents in 3 or 4 sets.

Another thing is that some of (what are now called) the MS1000 tournaments used to be played with best of 5-set finals. So, some of the older guys had more of an opportunity to play 5-set matches outside of the Grand Slams.

I'm surprised Chela had only played (12) 5-set matches at nearly 32 years old

    He's 5-7 (41.67%) coming into the FO 2011

    He's now 7-7 (50.00%)

    Got it.

Once again, the better 5-set record predicted success :)

Clement and Kubot also 3-3 in the 5th set

    Great stats.

But this is something that we knew: the lords of sweating it out workmanlikely (Borg and Nadal) are at the top. That's what they liked.

Great post, very interesting. I was surprised to see Federer so low, however it does add evidence that his fitness is rather low and that he would greatly benefit from training.

On another note, you see how much in common Borg and Nadal have LOL

They might be at the top but if you consider the total numbers/slam records of 5 set matches, an assassin like Sampras might be the real McCoy, IMHO.

I see what the OP is saying. Nadal would have won Wimbledon if he was good enough to take it to a 5th set. Djokovic was lucky to beat Nadal in 4.

The question is, can Nadal maintain that stamina up into his late 20s because we all know without his wheels he is nothing (especially considering Djokovic neutralizes that disgusting forehand topspin)
