I remember sitting at home with my old man watching the 03 AO 4th round match, saying how awesome Nalbandian is and how he is gna win a handul of slams and how Federer will never get his act together.

lol gta love Nalby and his semi final disasters....

IMO he probably should have been to the final of all four majors...

Would have won that US Open v Ferrero also

Most surprising 5 set winning percentage: Berdych - 15/6 (71%)
Most unsurprising 5 set winning percentage: Gasquet - 5/10 (33%)

^^Very interesting. Great work Mustard and Vive Le Beau Jeu and others as well. Johan Kriek had some injuries which led to a decline during the 1980's (as one factor), but through about 1981 or so, he was among the fastest/quickest/fittest guys out there. When he was "hot" with what I believe was a grey Yonex frame (~1980, when many were still playing with wood frames, before he went to a Donnay and others) . He could trouble just about anyone (see that five setter vs. Borg where he was up two sets to love). He had great wheels. In 1980 players said that he was almost as fast/quick anyone around. He wore those pretty nice Ellesse outfits which were "competing" for top billing in effect with Fila around that time in terms of "quality". What a character he was. He loved fast cars, etc. and was a "showman". He didn't take any "theatrics" from McEnroe and company, that's for sure. He was very vocal and interesting too!

Mustard - I have to applaud you for the exceptional work you've done in this thread! :)

Thanks for all the information. There was a lot of stuff in there that was new to me.

And a big thanks to everyone else as well! Your input has been fantastic.

grt .. does anyone have stats on who is the player to blow 2 set leads the most...

Looks like gasquet has a good chance can see at least 4 losses in which he led 2 sets to love

4 of his 11 losses in 5 sets have been that way

From the given list in this thread, borg lost one or both of the first two sets in his 5-set losses, so I think he's one candidate, will have to verify though ..

checked that too .. but he has only lost 6 matches so its great chance for him..
Out of players who have played at least 30 matches or lost 10 times in 5 sets

In the 1991 French Open match between Connors and Chang, Connors won the first point of the fifth set with a return of serve and then retired. Not sure if it officially counts as a 5-setter or not, but I have included it. If it doesn't count then Connors' record in matches that have gone to 5 sets is 26-16 (a 61.90 winning percentage).

Mustard, thanks. That Connors could take Chang to 5 sets on red clay at RG when he was 39 years of age gives you an indication of how good he must have been in his 20's! Amazing. I felt so bad seeing him unable to keep playing due to a injury (foot blister perhaps?). It would take a lot of pain to make him quit a match.

I believe it was his back. Connors won the first point of the fifth set and then went up to the umpire saying that he couldn't carry on. The umpire seemed surprised by Connors wanting to retire and asked a few more times if he was sure. Connors basically said "Do you think if there was anyway I could continue that I wouldn't take it? I'm working my butt off out here".

Oh BTW, Connors turned 39 on the day he beat Aaron Krickstein at the 1991 US Open, so he was still 38 at the time of the 1991 French Open ;)

Fed is really bad when the going gets tough.
Borg and Nadal are the best fighters but of course, we already knew that!
Thanks for posting the stats Bud.

You must comb through both the ATP and Davis Cup websites. Warning, it can make you go cross-eyed!

    Mustard...

If you have time would you double check Borg? There was some confusion about his record. I should have cut and pasted the information from each win/loss to verify my numbers :?

I did categorize the results by tournament category type, so that may help.

I've also requested that others follow your format for posting 5-set results. It's clean and easy to follow.

I've also started linking names to tournament results (see OP).

    Thanks :)

3 5 setters at the 74 FO for borg, looks like his superior fitness came into play there. Crushed orantes in the last 3 sets of the 74 final too. What happened there?

I'm not sure. I've never managed to see the 1974 French Open final.

Oh, and Bud, you've corrected the statistic for Gasquet but haven't moved him down the table to reflect his lower winning percentage :)

It should be pretty easy to trace the difference of 2

    My calculations are: (29/6)

22/3 in GS tournaments (25 total)
3/0 in DC matches (3 total)
4/3 in other tournaments (7 total)

I counted 25 GS 5-set matches and you counted 23... so the difference of 2 in our final tallies is probably in that subset. It's possible I counted (2) 4-set matches as 5 setters (after awhile the numbers mess with the eyes). Will double check the GS tournaments once again to see what number I arrive at.

Orantes was very good on red clay, so that was a tough win for Borg, especially since he turned 18 that Summer. See video below.
