It is incredible how the ATP fills the courts with spectators on DAY 2 of Roland Garros and the WTA keeps them empty in the same day.
The spectators of the ATP are a roaring crowd celebrating each point played by the players, whilst the scarce WTA ones seem to have gone to the cemetery instead of a tennis court.
Should the WTA players do a mass retirement and leave tennis to men?....

Because the WTA is boring to watch. I would maybe watch if they played best of 5 sets.

It is because Paris is full of beautiful women, and the spectators do not have to satisfy their need to see such by going to crappy shriekfests.

Separate tickets; it's not like spectators had a choice between the two.

I just cant get the "best of 3 sets is boring but best of 5 would be better" reasoning

it happens almost on every tournament that joins between WTA and ATP.. The organizers know it, the network know about it, the sponsors realize it and they can't do zip about it.. As soon as they do something about it, the women, the gay and lesbian.. and TEA party on & on & on will boycott them all over the news..
At least this year, the first time last 2 1000 Master tourneys, TC showed the ladies in the semis but the men's were live all matches thru out tournament..

It's not just FO where the stands are empty for WTA tennis. They ruined Cincy by combining the mens and womens events. To be politically correct they had to give the women equal time on the show courts which the women couldn't half fill while it was standing room only for a lot of the mens events on much smaller back courts. I guess WTA tennis can't survive without piggybacking on the men.

There were actually a number of attractive women in the stands. This is very rare at the other tournaments (save the occasional celebrity at the USO).

More like 7-6 6-7 7-6 6-7 10-8, with both players being up 4-1 in games in several sets, then blowing the lead, then going up 5-2 in tiebreaks, and blowing that lead, etc etc, while the men sit in the locker room waiting, and we fans on TW scream at the TV for the silly little girls to hurry the hell up.

    Fewer seemingly random champions.

If the men played best of three, four of the last seven majors would've had a different champion (Wimby '10, FO '11, USO '11, AO '12)

I've been there. This is nothing new.
This kind of attendance discrepancy would NOT happen in NY, Miami or LA where the WTA marketing machine actually works.

France? Too knowledgeable a constituency. Just too chauvinistic, as well.

The women's semis and finals will be well-attended. Until then, more of the same unless you have a joueur Francaise playing a name player. Razzano vs a Williams or a Bartoli vs a name player...that'll draw a half-house at least.

Kind of like women's basketball, or women's soccer, or any female sport. The world only takes notice when the girl is hott.

Of course that means if you were born a hott female, you've got it made. If not, then you're sadly screwed :(

Hingis was not hot, neither was Henin or Navratilova. People acknowledge quality. At the moment there is none.

Of course hot players (from Sabatini to Kournikova) add to the popularity of women's tennis as well.

I suppose, but to get on the radar of the average sports enthusiast, the woman has to be completely dominant in her sport for an extended period of time. Or be hott ;)

    Hard to argue with that.
When you add in the shrieking there are very few matches worth watching.

I am all for this. They should make it best of one instead of best of three, so they don't take 3 hours to finish in between all the choking and shrieking while delaying some ATP match until midnight.

It's pretty bad when Radwanska has a shot at being no. 1. That should not happen. Azarenka was a mess. Sharapova was shrieking so loud gps stopped working in several cities in the EU.

The situation is so bad you couldn't make this stuff up.

I think the SF and final can be made Best of 5 sets so that we can see fitness issues also coming in ..we have rarely seen best of 5 set matches
can remember seles sabatini playng a final that went 5 sets though 90 WTA tour championships final
    2 finals involving graf too

The bizarre inconsistencies in play, the shrieking, the breakdowns, are all odd and off putting.

Having said that, let's take a look at the games of those complaining. No, let's not.

Well its simply not fun watching matches like Azarenka/Brianti.

Up a 7-6,4-0 (and then having several game points to go 5-0) and still loose the match???

She literally just quit playing tennis at that point. They could have put a cardboard cut out there on the court in place of Brianti for the remainder of that second set and it would have put more balls back in play than she did.

People dont like watching that crap.

depends if its before an anticipated ATP match, if so the final score will be more like 7-6 6-7 7-6 6-7 8-6

I looked around, turns out that there has not been a women's major final that has gone longer than 2 hours. Where the men's, there has not been a major final that has been shorter than 3 hours.
    Equality my posterior.

I expect the WTA to soon demand more prize money that the men for some nonsense reason. Hey, it worked the 1st time.

Its not a gender thing. In the 90s, WTA was probably more popular than ATP. You had Graf fending off Seles and Navratilova was still lurking. There were actually S&Vers and alot of contrasting styles. On the ATP, it was mostly 2 or 3 shot tennis.

Wrong, I have been at the Sony tournament in Miami for many years, and the men's matches almost always have much bigger crowds. The only exception is when a highly ranked woman gets moved to a smaller outside court (e.g., Clijsters on court #2 due to rain a few years back).

Even if they didn't have the choking and shrieking, the level of tennis displayed is about 10x lower than the men. Part of it is the physical inability, part is the lack of talent - apart from a very few exceptions like Henin, the women simply don't have the tennis skills or smarts.

A stand-up comedian (can't remember who) had a joke on this topic. Something along the lines of "If you are a guy, you can get away with being born ugly but if you are an ugly girl, life is really difficult".
