Really??? Screw that, man! what the hell? He was doing so well, he deserves that WC!

PS: Are you sure that he even wanted to play here? Because I don't see him in the qualies. Or did he choose not to play because he didn't want to go through qualies again?

Gulbis had already said he would not go to Miami before the WC was awarded.

I looked for info on a pre qualifier, didnt find any. I'm gonna assume since DB's been down at Bolletieri's frequently, and since it's an IMG academy now, and since the Sony is an IMG event, that that's the connection.

It'll be interesting to see his results from here on out. Doesnt really make sense to me that he can stay that close to a top 100 pro, but isnt dominating jrs, and hasnt been able to win a MD Futures match or even come thru Futures qualies yet.

With the insane Novak gif and the Gulbis malaria scare, this thread is already a classic and the tournament hasn't even started yet...

Because the gap from juniors to futures/challengers/ATP is getting smaller and smaller. The depth right now in tennis is very good, especially in the lower ranks and the junior game. With the right training, technique, and different information out there what separates the best from the rest will continue to grow smaller. DB can lose to Brands 2 and 4 today and lose to some guy ranked 500 tomorrow in a futures in 3 sets. The gap is that small and has been trending that way for a few years now.

    Draw here: http://www.atpworldtour.com/share/event-draws.aspx?year=2013&eventid=403&draw=ms

The guys running the tournament need to get a clue (I guess they're just thinking in terms of young argentinian = more views in south american market)... Ernests would have been my favourite to win it.

I hope Donskoy makes it far. Could be an interesting match between him and Djokovic. I picked Berdych for the tournament because he's been playing well, but i think Gasquet will take him out if they meet.

Wonder if Delpo will have enough left in the tank to have another inspired run here, will also be interesting to see if Novak and Murray show up in better form than in IW.

I agree, to an extent. Futures level players have jumped up an surprised a few established pros before. Guccione beat Ferrero 2 yrs in a row I believe when Ferrero was top 10-20 in the world, and Gooch was in the 400s. Some French guy Olivetti beat Fish when mardy was top 10 or close to it, when he was in the 400s as well.

However, we're talking someone who doesnt even have 1 ATP pt. Hasnt won any big tourneys, hasnt won a MD Futures match, hasnt come thru qualies once, and he's played a few Futures this yr.

Has he improved that much in a few weeks??

For comparison, one of the other qualies WCs, Nishioka, got double bageled by De Bakker. Nishioka is ranked in the 500s.

Nishioka has a Futures title, plus a final to his name. Just beat Mitchell Krueger and Christian Harrison a couple of weeks ago in a Futures. Plus he has a pretty good jrs record.

    Who's the better player??

The same Christian Harrison who went 3 sets with Gulbis in IW's qualies? Current rank 377.

The depth is getting better, DB plays a big game from the looks of it so for him to rattle off games against a top 75 player is not surprising. I called 3 and 2 Brands, it was 2 and 4. Who knows who DB has been playing practice sets against in Bradenton and how he has been doing. Also, 2 and 4 really isn't that close, but it will serve as motivation to get better considering he is 16 years old. When it comes down to it tennis is simply about hitting a ball back and forth, and the number of people out there who do that really well is growing each year.

It will be interesting to see if BB posts some video footage of the match on his YouTube channel.

From looking at the stats, the second set was close. It was only 1 break, and DB had 2 chances to break.

However, as I posted in another thread, he's never won a big jr tourney, not has he even won a MD Futures match.

Nishioka, who's won a Futures tourney, gets beat 0 & 0??? If the levels are so close, and Nishioka is better at this point, how come DB did so much better than him??

Good draw from Delpo, but I don't think he'll make it far due to tiredness, still he has days off between matches and his match doesn't start until at least Friday, we'll see.

Fed fans all on Tomic this time. If Murray fails then I'm putting JJ into the QF and possibly SF if Tsonga falls as well.

Djokovic is defo the favourite but I do hope that Delpo can carry on the momentum.

Norbac I think if they had offered Gulbis a wild card immediately after his loss to Rafa in IW he would have taken it. I mean, he even said he wanted one in his post match interview. But he said he had no interest in playing qualifiers which is the correct decision in my opinion - so I'm guessing he didnt want to just hang around waiting to see if he would get the last WC or not. Bit of a farce. He is playing so well and I think this surface would have suited him even better than IW plus it would have kept his ranking on the up and up - he could have been seeded for RG! I think he will definitely be seeded for Wimbledon. He's at 55 right now

Really? I had read an interview the day after he lost to Rafa where he said something along the likes of: "No one is going to give a guy from Latvia a WC no matter how well he is playing". Either way it looks like he wants to focus on the clay, since he also has a Davis Cup tie on clay. Good on him to be at number 55, should be just about enough to get into the clay Masters, right?

Just a quick question - I notice lots of people participate in the betting of winners to gain points. Out of the top ones - I wonder if anyone uses the top sorting predictors to win money through online betting?

You're asking me if I use the thread-poll to help me bet on players? No, I don't, I just try and predict who would win against who and I also look for good odds. For example I saw that you got x7 if you bet on Del Potro to win against Djokovic. I bet a small amount on that and won (should have bet more in hindsight..). But I lose more than I win overall so maybe I should use the poll, i dunno

That could explain why his serve sucked so much in IW semi. If he has anything wrong, he should skip the event. Can you imagine the face of the tournament owner if all of Fed, Nadal and Djoko went awol?

Third alternate on the MC entry list as of right now. Perhaps he can get a WC, since he really should.

Maybe DB has more weapons to take games off of higher ranked players? There is much to be said for matchups as well.

Doubt that's it. If he had 'pro weapons' he should be doing better in jrs and lower level pro tourneys.

Now, it's possible he improved quite a bit in a few wks, but I'd say unlikely.

Still wondering how he got the WC over someone like Fratangelo, who's been putting up pretty good results lately.

I guess I had better get used to not having Federer or Nadal in the draw in the coming years...they can't play forever.

When guessing the draw, some names that gave me the same excitement of seeing Fed or Rafa's name in the draw (and I hope they get better because they're so fun to watch) were not many...but were: Dolgopolov, Janowicz, Raonic, and kinda Tomic because of his jerk attitude and slice and dice game..gonna be a fun potential 2nd round w/Murray

You keep asking me for an explanation as to how he went 2 and 4 with a top 75 pro yet you have zero answers yourself. Ignoring the fact that indeed the talent pool grows deeper each day, by chance have you played a top 500 ATP tour player in a match? Just because you have "weapons" doesn't mean you will blow through guys ranked 300-500 in the world. Borna Coric who Deiton beat at the Orange Bowl lost 6 and 6 to a guy top 300 ATP recently, the gap between top junior and pro players in that range isn't as big as you think. Gulbis has huge weapons yet he went 3 sets with Christian Harrison (ATP 377) in qualies at Indian Wells, and Harrison was one of the guys who lost to Nishioka. So can we say Nishioka would take Gulbis to 3 or beat him because he beat Christian Harrison who did? Doesn't work that way.

He probably got the wildcard because dad worked his "magic". There are other factors as well.
