ATP MEDIA NOTES - THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2004

FEDERER CHARGES INTO QUARTERFINALS

Top seed and INDESIT ATP 2004 Race leader Roger Federer defeated talented Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Federer, the defending champion in Dubai, improved to 13-1 on the year and next meets dangerous Romanian Andrei Pavel.

Pavel defeated Czech qualifier Tomas Zib 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-1 to reach his first ATP quarterfinal of the season. Pavel, who reached the BNP Paribas Masters final (l. to Henman) in the last week of the 2003 season, pushed Federer when they met last month in the second round of Rotterdam. Federer won that encounter 7-6, 7-5.

Croatian Ivan Ljubicic defeated seventh seed Paradorn Srichaphan 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 to also reach the quarterfinals. Ljubicic is enjoying a big season in the Middle East, having reached the Doha final in the first week of the year.

Ljubicic next meets Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who defeated German qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Federer: "I thought I played pretty well. Today I was consistent and I always felt if he was going to come back that I could have controlled the match which was a good feeling and took pressure off my serve."

"I served well again at the moments I had to and I played aggressive on break points. Obviously I would like to minimize the break points because right now there are too many so that has to improve for the next few rounds."

On Robredo: "I don't think he played his best match today. He wasn't hitting his shots as cleanly as he usually does even though the conditions are extremely slow here so I'm sure that has something to do with it."

Srichaphan: “It was exactly the same as in Bangkok. 7-5 in the third, losing my serve at 5-all. I was down a break in the second set and came out with nothing to lose, just trying to put the ball in the court and play good tennis.”

“I tried to go for it a little too much at the end and missed it which gave him a chance to serve for the match with new balls.”

About his ankle injury: “I twisted my ankle in the Australian Open and then again in practice in Rotterdam. It’s getting much better though.”

Ljubicic: “It was almost the same match as in Thailand. He had chances in the first set, especially in the tie-break, but I played a couple of good points there and won the set by just two points.”

“Everything looked good when I had the break in the second and I felt good and confident. Suddenly I lost my serve, so I had to fight back.”

“My tactic was to serve well. I knew I had to do that and try to make him play as much as possible as he hits so hard that it wouldn’t be smart to try and hit even harder than him.”

On his next round: “I’ve never played against Lopez so we’ll see how it goes tomorrow. We are both serving well and I think a couple of points will decide the whole match.”

Robredo: “I think that it's tough to play against Roger as he’s playing at such a good level right now. I think I played a great match in everything apart from my serve. I served my worst match all year.”

“When I was playing from the baseline it was very good and I was winning a lot of the points. I think the point of the match was that I couldn’t serve today.”

Kohlschreiber: On his week in Dubai: “I wasn’t expecting much coming here. I just wanted to play tennis in the qualifying event and I did well and I hope I go on at this level in the next tournament so that I can play against the top players again.”

QUARTERFINALS

Russian Mikhail Youzhny meets Rafael Nadal of Mallorca in quarterfinal action Friday in the pair’s first meeting. This is Nadal’s first appearance in the quarterfinals at Dubai, and Youzhny is enjoying his best showing at the tournament after having lost in the first round in 2002 and 2003.

Ivan Ljubicic lands his third consecutive quarterfinal appearance at Dubai, losing last year in the semis to eventual winner, Roger Federer. Ljubicic has enjoyed much success this year, following an appearance as a finalist at Doha. He is 8-4 on the year and maintains an INDESIT ATP Entry Ranking of 22. This is Feliciano Lopez’s second straight Dubai quarterfinal appearance; he lost to Tommy Robredo in the same round last year. Lopez is 3-3 on year and he maintains a INDESIT ATP Entry Ranking of 32. The players have never met before.

Eighth seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands advanced to the quarterfinals after a tough three set victory over Fabrice Santoro, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 16. Schalken meets Finn Jarkko Nieminen, who currently stands 10-6 on the year. The Dutchman won the pair’s only meeting (Stockholm, 2001), outlasting the Finn in a five-set marathon, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Currently, Schalken maintains a 11-4 record and is ranked 17th in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race.

Defending champion Roger Federer expelled Tommy Robredo in Thursday’s action and will meet Romanian Andri Pavel in the quarterfinals. Federer, who improved his Dubai record to 8-1 and advanced his overall 2004 record to an impressive 13-1, was last beaten by Tim Henman in Rotterdam. Federer is 5-1 versus the Romanian, including a record of 3-0 on hard. Pavel is 7-4 on the year, and he currently maintains an INDESIT ATP Entry Ranking of 33.

Thanks for the reports. I know I asked you not to post them before, but as long as you are I will just check out the scores here and not the ATP sitte, although they are good for a laugh for the daily mistakes in results, etc.

No problem, Shaolin . I'll post them through the end of the week, but then IW starts, and I'll be there and not here. Yes, I hear the Hooray from some folks, but I don't care. I'm in just a great mood. Rafa's in the quarters, IW is next week. Life is good.

But don't worry, I'll be back.

Anyway, Scottsdale was totally rained out, I guess:

ATP MEDIA NOTES – THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2004

RAIN WREAKS HAVOC IN SCOTTSDALE

No matches were completed on Thursday as rain proved to be the only winner at the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale. In what little action there was, second seed Martin Verkerk opened up a 6-2, 0-2 lead against American qualifier Cecil Mamiit 6-2, 0-2, while Swedish teenager Robin Soderling was 3-2 up against Victor Hanescu of Romania before rain suspended play for the day.

FRIDAY PREVIEW

With rain wreaking havoc on Thursday, some players will play twice on Friday as they bid to reach the semifinals of the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale.
Martin Verkerk will resume his match against Cecil Mamiit, before Andy Roddick takes on Alex Bogomolov Jr in second round action.Verkerk has won all three of his previous encounters against Mamiit on the Challenger circuit, and will start on Friday with a 6-2, 0-2 lead when play resumes. Verkerk, a semifinalist in Sydney and quarterfinalist in Milan, is 8-4 overall this year, while Mamiit qualified into the main draw and won his first ATP match of the year against Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard in the opening round.
The winner of this match will face the winner of the Robin Soderling-Victor Hanescu second round encounter later in the day on Clubhouse Court.
Roddick, who is 15-3 overall this year, is attempting to reach his fourth quarterfinal of the season.
The 21-year-old, who currently stands in seventh position in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race, claimed his 12th career title in San Jose (d. Fish) and reached the last eight at the Australian Open (l. to Safin) and Memphis (l. to Enqvist). Bogomolov Jr, who received a wild card into his first Scottsdale main draw, claimed his first ATP match win of the season after defeating Argentine qualifier Gustavo Marcaccio in the opening round.
Roddick or Bogomolov Jr. will return later in the night session match to play the quarterfinal against either Jan-Michael Gambill or Lars Burgsmuller.
Former champion Gambill, who won the title on his last visit to the tournament in 1999 (d. Hewitt), extended his record in the tournament to 8-1 after defeating American wild card Brendan Evans in the first round. Gambill also is looking to reach his third consecutive quarterfinal (San Jose, Memphis) while Burgsmuller claimed his first win of the season (1-4) against lucky loser Alex Kim, who replaced Taylor Dent in the main draw.
In quarterfinal action, seventh seed Nicolas Kiefer takes on third seed Robby Ginepri for the first time. Kiefer, who ended his six-match losing streak in Memphis before going on to reach the final (l. to Joachim Johansson), is making his first appearance in Scottsdale since 1998, when he lost to eventual champion Gambill in the second round. Kiefer advanced to the quarterfinal this week with wins over Brian Vahaly and Dmitry Tursunov, while Ginepri overcame Tripp Phillips and Wesley Moodie – saving two match points against the South African. This is Ginepri’s first quarterfinal of the season.
In an all-American quarterfinal, fourth seed Vincent Spadea takes on sixth seed James Blake for the third time (tied 1-1). Spadea is appearing in his third quarterfinal of the season (Adelaide, Auckland), while Blake – who reached the fourth round at the Australian Open – is playing in his first.

Here's Acapulco. I'm glad to see Moya doing well. I think Gasquet could have beaten him. He just needs to work on his conditioning a bit.

ATP MEDIA NOTES - THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2004

MOYA, CHELA ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS

Top seed Carlos Moya moved through to the quarterfinals of the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis Telefonica MoviStar in Acapulco after defeating French teenager Richard Gasquet. Moya, the 2002 Acapulco champion who is looking to reach his fourth final in just five tournaments this year, extended his 2004 record to 15-3 with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gasquet in what was the first meeting between the two. Moya, who also reached the quarterfinals in Acapulco in 2003 (l. to Mantilla) and the semifinals in 2001 (l. to Blanco), now has a 12-2 record in the tournament.
In the quarterfinal, the Spaniard will now meet No. 8 seed Filippo Volandri, the Italian who defeated Stefan Koubek 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday. Volandri, who lost to Mariano Zabaleta in his only previous appearance in Acapulco in 2003, advanced to the quarterfinal in Vina del Mar last month (l. to Kuerten). Moya has won both of their previous matches - in the first round at Roland Garros in 2003 and the final in Umag later in the year.
Meanwhile, No. 7 seed Juan Ignacio Chela advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over David Ferrer. Chela, who won the title when it was last played in Mexico City in 2000 and reached the semifinals in 2002 (l. to Meligeni), also defeated Ferrer in the first round in Costa do Sauipe last week.
Chela now meets Spaniard Oscar Hernandez, who reached his first quarterfinal of the season with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 victory over Luis Horna, the Peruvian who upset defending champion Agustin Calleri in the first round.

WHAT THE PLAYER'S SAID
Moya: "I think that experience has helped me. I saw that he was a bit tired and took advantage of it. I took more control of the match after the first set where he played unbelievable tennis. With tennis like this he can beat anyone."

"I am usually expected to win, but I am used to it since every week I play against players normally ranked lower than me. But this is the best of all pressures since it means that I am up there in the rankings. Regarding Gasquet, I am sure he is going to be up there shortly since he is a great player".

"I have played Volandri twice and I managed to win but he is a very good player that runs a lot and hits the ball very hard. He is a bit more defensive than Gasquet and I am expecting a tough long match. I hope I have some luck and get into the semis"

Chela: "I played well during the whole match very solid and consistent. I started bad with a break down but managed to break back again and that made me think more about the chances"

“I am in good shape, I have been working very hard these weeks, playing good tennis and I am very motivated."
"Playing against the Spaniards is good since it is a similar game. I have never played against him but we played doubles together in Australia and do know the way he plays. He could be a bit tired since he's played 3 sets in both matches"

Hernandez: "Difficult match and again 3 sets. I am feeling good but tomorrow it is going to be a very difficult match since Chela is playing great tennis. I am really looking forward to play tomorrow"

FRIDAY PREVIEW

Quarterfinal Friday at the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis Telefonica MoviStar in Acapulco with four Spaniards, three South Americans and one Italian still remaining in the draw. With none of the Spaniards playing each other, the possibility of an all-Spanish semifinals exists. Just three weeks ago in San Jose, four Americans advanced to the semifinals making it the first tournament in a year with all four semifinalists coming from one country.
The marquee match-up of the day is top-seeded Carlos Moya against Filippo Volandri of Italy in the night match on Center Court. Moya and Volandri played a scintillating match in the final of the 2003 Croatia Open last July when Volandri reached his first ATP final, and since then, Volandri has continued to improve and move up the INDESIT ATP Entry Rankings. Moya is looking to join Thomas Muster as a two-time winner at this event (which used to be played in Mexico City), having captured the Acapulco title in 2002.
In other matches, Nicolas Massu takes on Fernando Verdasco. The two played three weeks ago with Massu having little trouble with the 20-year-old Spaniard. Massu is trying to reach his first semifinal of the year after dropping quarterfinal matches in both Vina del Mar and Buenos Aires.
Oscar Hernandez is trying to reach his first ATP semifinal ever when he plays Juan Ignacio Chela, while Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo is gunning for his second ATP semifinal of his career after reaching the last four in Sopot, Poland, last year.
