Also known as the David Ferrer Open. :)

I've been at the ASB Classic WTA event and the Heineken Open so I thought I'd post some pictures.

Here are Yaroslava Shvedova and Julia Goerges after losing the doubles final on Saturday:

Haha. Yes I think this is the 5th year in a row that I have attended the heineken open. Didn't post any photos last year though (despite also going to Melbourne).

I think this year I'm excited because I picked up a new camera. :)

How does Dustin Brown destroy the ball the way he does? His arms are like pencils.

    Simple...it's more than show muscles.

As if you need muscles to hit hard. It's about the technique. You barely use the muscles in your arm.

'Jankowicz' (ugh) about to start. Will Paris Jerzy show up? It is windy out there.

One of his faults almost hit the baseline :)

Still getting them up around 140 mph

Jerzy saves 4 set points (0-40 down) on his serve to take it to a breaker in the 2nd.

The Janowicz-Baker match is insane. Janowicz is playing absolutely reckless, but he has nerves of steel on break points. Baker is currently 0/14 break points converted.

Baker finally breaks! Jerzy has still only generated one BP for the match.

    Double break now.

Nerves of steel from Baker. 18 break points, won only two, and something like 8 or 9 match points needed to close it out.
Total poker face, almost Federer-like expressions, no emotion. Well done Baker.

So much for the Janowicz hype.

Janowicz was 1-5 and 0-40 down and then won 13 points in a row to get it back to 4-5. Pretty random time to decide to play good tennis.

Janowicz is more clutch than Djokovic is against Federer at the US Open. :p Except he still loses unlike Eeyore.

Yeah Janowicz did great to almost come back. I think a lot of people would've expected a bit more from him at a smaller event like this but it's only one match, one tournament, means nothing in the scheme of things.

What means nothing is his one tournament run in Paris. The guys all hyped up while he's done very little yet. Like Rosol, I expect him not to make an immediate second impact

LOL...a swing of two points in a TB and Janowicz walks off with a straight set win and the hype over being a flash in the pan holds no water. He'll be fine, maybe not right away...slow HC will be harder for him than Bercy. Remember, he has more than just the one week in Paris...two junior Slam finals, almost into 2nd week at Wimby, several Challenger titles in '12.

The big thing I take from the match stats...until the third set and all those MPs saved...he was winning less than 20% of Baker's 2nd serve points. Work to do there, for sure.

I wouldn't give up on JJ yet. Those condtions yesterday were the worst possible imaginable. Several players said they'd never experienced anything like it. I played in the morning and the wind was swirling around, changing direction and destroying any rhythm.

I think the wind affected the taller players more and also the younger ones. Rocchus managed very well, as did (of all people) Malisse.

JJ seems to have no nerves at all - he did get frustrated with the wind of course - almost like he was thinking "Hey guys, you need to fix this!"

But he went for all his shots - no defensive play to speak of. He just needs to settle down and learn some patience, rather than trying to hit winners all the time, expecially in difficult conditions.

Klizan and Goffin were disappointing too - once again, youngsters with less experience of these sort of conditions.

Hell, I pity the guys (and girls) in Sydney today - temperatures of 43 dgrees C - 110 degrees F are forecast!

excellent pics, Rhino ..... thanks! :)

gotta question for you as someone who's familiar with Kiwi culture: Regarding the way their pronounce their vowels A-E-I-O-U .... do they teach school children to pronounce the Es the way we pronounce Is and the Is the way we pronounce Es?

This exactly. Nothing about the loss last night made me think any less of Jerzy's enormous potential. Baker barely got away with the tie-break, and Jerzy's youth showed in the next 10 minutes where he got frustrated and had a lull. He should do better in that situation as he matures.

That fact that "Jerzy seems to have no nerves at all" is exactly what makes him so dangerous, along with that huge serve and forehand. He's exactly the kind of guy that any big dog at a Slam does not want to face, because he can take the racquet right out of your hands with his game and, so far, it seems like he just isn't prone to get too tight. What I really want to see is if he continues to play such fearless, no-nerves tennis in Slam matches as he gains more notoriety and now, for the first time, a seed. The way he handled those break points against Baker, just crushing the ball and nailing those serves, was remarkable. Can he do the same under the bigger lights of Melbourne? That will be interesting.

Super stoked to watch him progress. Both he and Dimitrov in the early rounds of AO will be super fun to watch.

    Thx, Mainad! :)
Wonder how much money Uncle SAP invested in Levine? Obviously, there's not as much ill will as there was against Alex Bogomolov ... but ... did Jesse Levine EVER play tennis for Canada (in a money-earning capacity, that is)? He's earned almost a million playing "for" USA ..........
