Wow, this match was incredible. Past the third set, the players were falling to pieces. There was some very high quality tennis, though, particularly from Simon's side. In the rallies, he was forcing Monfils to play his game and constantly putting the ball back in. Kudos to both players.

Once again we're having people tell us what a great advert this was for the sport. I beg to differ.

Much better than their last meeting here. Truly depends what you are into. While I love Simon's game and disagree that this was a "pusher" contest, rallies were generally 20+ and that can get kind of hypnotic.

either way, Monfils looked ready to retire midway through the second set so if anything it was an incredible display of physicality by both guys

This match was a low point for bassline tennis in the modern era. I saw three points and switched off.

    LOL!

He could be the biggest waste of athletic talent in the history of this planet. Truly sad.

But good for Simon to get R16 pts and $$$$ - nice seeing an average sized guy have a nice career.

Actually, arguably it's as good as the vast majority of sports drink on the market if it's watered down. Apparently it's not PC to say so.

I decided to go to bed because ESPN opted to show a rerun of a Williams sisters blowout instead of the live Monfils/Simon match.

Gave up watching last night at 3-3 in the fifth but started again via the replay. Damn, this turned into a weird sort of epic, didn't it? Quality of play definitely started rising towards the end - 2 47-shot rallies in the last half hour! It was weird seeing pusher 70 mph serves followed by strong baseline rallies, followed by a weak rally and an error.

Sad for my man Gael, but it would have been a moot point anyway - Murray is gonna slaughter Simon. But bien joué, les gars! Et bonne chance!

That sums up the match nicely.
