Is there a curse placed on the AO finalist. Hewitt, Bagdatis, Gonzalez and now Tsonga. Each of the last four finalist' careers have either stagnated or gone down. None of these players are even playing Monte Carlo and they all play well on clay.

You forgot Rainer Schuettler. Finished 2003 in Top 10 and made the TMC semifinals. Talk about a nosedive.

it probably has a mental jinx on those finalists.

being on form so early in the year yet not winning it is a big beating.

    It's not a curse.

The AO is played on a goofy surface, in an inhospitable climate, at a strange time of the season, right after most players have taken some time off.

    As a result, it favors...

    - Rare top-level players who work hard all year long to stay in game shape. (The "surprising" Agassi dominance)
    - Players who are just simply more talented than everyone else. (Federer's great run there, Safin's occasional run)
    - Up-and-comers who don't yet have the luxury of knowing what the "off season" is. (The surprise finalists who then suffer the "curse.")

They aren't cursed, they're generally just the players who are better prepared for a hot, two-week, grueling early season slog than the regulars. (Because they've still got that lean and hungry motivation thing going that forces them to bust their ### while everyone else is taking a little R&R.) But who are likewise more talented than the rest of the lean and hungry also-rans.

These are guys like Tsonga, Rainer, Gonzo and the like, who would normally be 4th round or quarter final outs against prepped competition. But since the competition isn't quite up to speed yet, they get a little bounce till they run into an Agassi or Federer type.

Then, it's foolish to expect it to be the start of something big, because as soon as the field gets back to game speed, those guys are 4th round outs once again, as they ought to be.
