Does anyone know how useful the AVG toolbar is? I'm tempted to remove it, because it slows things down... Am I not protected enough with simply having AVG active at start up?

I don't use anti virus software at home. Just make yourself a standard user on Windows. This type of user cannot install software.

You don't need it. Use firefox or google chrome for browsing. Don't use IE unless you have to.

It's pointless, as is anything made by AVG.

I do use Firefox... but somehow I think AVG isn't THAT bad and pointless. But the true question for me is whether the toolbar is needed, and why (don't the basic AVG functions already protect me?).

The toolbar is not needed. AVG is a poor AV product all around these days. MSE is far superior.

Just being aware of bad websites such as tennis-warehouse.com :D is enough to avoid viruses and spyware.

Not one iota. I use Avast Antivirus and Malwarebytes (both are free)
