This is the racquet Nadal uses.

The similarity is freakish, I have the same preference and also recently made the switch to the '12 PDR as to allow for easier access to new racquets. To me, the original APD feels much closer to the PDR than either APD GT or APD '13. Of course, with the oAPD, being significantly less stiff.

niktub, are you specifically after a nos? Or an oAPD to hit with.

Yes, the 2012 PDR feels very similar to the original APD. However, I find easier power and spin with the PDR. I still have a backup original APD.

The AeroPro drive plus? Hopefully it meets expectations.

I took the Aero Original out for a good hit. The serves were killer! My normal hitting partner said I've never served as well in the 9 months we've hit together. I was getting tons of pace and spin with the normal length Aero orig.

We'll see how the Plus hits

    Cheers

v-verb, have you received your nos APD yet?

If you have, is yours gloss or matte. My nos came matte but playing one is gloss. I was told that even though it's counter intuitive, handling the frame via increased use will eventually render the matte finish to gloss. Very noticeable when I compare my two sticks. I kinda prefer the glossy look on the APD.

    hi Gavan

pics - look the same to me aside from slight cosmetic changes. Any closeups of yours? From what I saw of yours it looks the same as my sticks.

One question guys - looks like these and my Pro Staffs will be my main sticks.

Do the current APD grommets fit? Might as well grab a few sets if they do

Of course the current grommets fit. Same mold, same string pattern, same head size.

Thanks! I was wondering because current Pro Staff grommets don't fit St Vincent Pro Staffs, nor do current POG grommets fit 1 stripe POGS

Time to grab a couple of sets

v-verb, here are close ups of mine. Might be hard to tell from pics. My playing APD which I didnt buy brand new has a smooth, glossy feel, whereas NOS has matte and lighter finish.

ps: any plans to string yours? Hard decision hey.

hi Ross K, nos stands for "new old stock" of out of production racquets.
This APD original was released in 2005.

    ^^ Okay, I see.

On a broader note, this was my fav frame for a few years for simply bombarding the baseline with spin and power. Very addictive, especially with that big ol' beam and slightly better feel/softeness to other APD versions I tried. I've had about 5 APDO's in more recent years and this includes a plus size which had been cut down. And re fav set ups, @ 50 lbs and a bit lower, I tried a ton of poly and liked (among others) TB and Pros Pro, and also got into a groove with poly/N,Vy.

Superb racket anyhow and nice to see it garnering some love.

    hi Gavan!

I can see the difference and I think it could be from being played a lot. My player I don't think has that many hours on it. I expect it will get shinier the more it's used. So not to worry!

I think I'll keep my NOS unstrung. I paid a bit over 2x what you did and I think it's a cool piece to keep pristine. I did buy a plus as mentioned above so between the 2 I should be quite fine for APD Origs. Until I get another player:)

Agreed Ross! Although I have to say I let my hitting partner try it (He uses a modern Pure Drive) and he didn't like the vibration from it at all. The cortex I guess does it's job to a degree. I just like these sticks without it.

And serving!! Wow can't get over how good this stick is for me especially on second serves. They are going in with lots of pop now. Never done that before!

thanks v-verb. I'm the same regarding stringing it. I don't play enough right now to warrant needing a spare. It's recreational tennis for me, so I alternate with the Wilsons too.

Ross K, did you hold on to your 5 APDs or are they long gone?

If you get tempted to string the NOS up sell it instead - you could probably get $300 or more for it.

There's one for sale on TT - $90 shipped.

I was going to get it but grabbed a Pro Staff Largehead instead. In retrospect the Bab was the better investment, but the 16 x 19 in a 110 Pro Staff is something I have to try!

Hey gavan, still got 2 or 3 but holding on to them, just in case... :)

Also would like to say that IMHO for anyone who likes these frames and has not yet tried the 99s to consider giving it a demo. It's an excellent frame in my view and I think there are some shared traits that APD-lovers might appreciate.

does all original Aeropro Drive and Aeropro Control got that "a" logo just above the handle?

Sorry if this had been asked before but I dont know what key words can I use to attempt a search on the forum

Hi Boinz, I read in an old thread that either the earlier or later (cant recall which) manufactured ones did not have the "a" logo above the handle. Everything else is identical.

If your question relates to authenticity, I can say that in all my research, I haven't seen any examples of fake oAPDs. The closest I've seen, again in an old thread here, is a pure drive with an oAPD paintjob, so obviously bad it was funny.

    Welcome boinz!

    Gavan

I got my Aeropro + today. It's been used more than my other player Original and it is definitely shiner than my Orig and my NOS Orig.

So your player Orig is fine

    Cheers

Thanks for confirming that v-verb. I somehow prefer the glossy, darker look. Maybe I'll need to handle the nos. eg walk around the neighborhood with it, hold it while watching tv, haha.
Let me know how different the feel is with the +. I'm told you'll get a lot of extra pop with it. I used to own a + which must have been cut down to 27. The guy I bought it from mustn't have rebalanced it as it felt different to my regular APD.

v-verb, have you ever owned or hit with the pro staff tour 90 - the one that came after the ps85. I'm trying to find one that's decently priced. Always have liked the look of it and was wondering if it plays like the vinny.

hey Gavan, I'll give it a hit this weekend and compare to to my 27" Orig and report back

I've got a couple of these http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/reviews/61tblx/61tblxreview.html . Haven't hit with them yet but will do and let you know.

The 85 is a freaking monster. Will be hard to top it! Can't wait to do a gut main/ poly cross and see what happens. I did have a 85 BLX version in all Klip gut and holy crow that was a rocket machine - as in controllable hard shots to the corners and painting lines.

    Too many sticks...too little time:)

    Thanks v-verb.

PS85 is indeed a monster! I had a hitting session with a mate who also has a vinny. Felt awesome, but we couldnt hit for long before we started to feel the weight of the mighty stick. Grown too accustomed to the APD. But you cant beat the sheer precision of shots on the ps.

    The unlikely twosome:

Completely agree with you Boricua. It's slowly getting back there. Yellow/white paintjob of cortex was a disappointing follow up to the oAPD. Every new APD has had increased darker tones. Hopefully next one comes back full circle to all black.

Hi pbarrow, my fave strings for the APDo are yonex poly tour pro 1.25, iontec hexa black 1.24, iontec 1.25 strung at 45-47#s on a electronic constant pull machine. Takes a hit for the strings to break in and drop about 5#s. after the initial tension drop, it feels great.

    They're still out there!!

After a long search, my playing partner Ray finally acquired his own oAPD NOS in L3 grip!! Needless to say he's as happy as Rafa on clay.

Hi v-verb, my mate bought it from a tennis collector here in Sydney. Same guy I got my ps85 vinny from. He got a good deal for it too. Paid in between what you and I paid for our respective nos oAPD.

just wondering if any oAPD users here bought theirs brand new and still kept the card, ie cardboard advert that came attached to racquet frame.
Or even if you happen to be in possession of one, please let me know.

Hey v-verb, yes it WAS my old 59 reissue. I'm a Les Paul fanatic so I have a bunch of them right now raging from 58 reissue, 89 standard, Iron Cross LP and Rhodes LP etc.

Do you see the obsession pattern here? lol. :)

Hey Gavan55, I finally got my original APD. I will post pics once I have it re-strung. Thanks man.

Hi v-verb, that's ok I've seen your card from the pics of the nos you posted.
I should have been clearer in my post - basically my mate Ray who got his nos recently (pics above) is chasing an original card as his didnt come with one.

Hey VoodooChild24 yes I've replaced that pricey obsession with this much cheaper and healthier one! My avatar is a dead nuts replica that is better thank any R9 or vintage conversion I've owned/played - although I've never played a real '59.

Thanks Gavan - understood. Those cards are fun to have!
