Last Sunday, I was practicing serves with a can of brand new Wilson balls. I left them at the fence and was standing outside the court chatting with someone for 10 minutes (my back was to the court). I saw two guys from the next court walk past with their bags, done with their match. I turned around, and the balls were gone. The guy I was chatting with said he also noticed them cross but could not say for sure if they had gone to the fence and pocketed the balls. Some mixed doubles league players from another club were also around.

What kind of world do we live in if a guy cannot leave his new balls on the court, when he is a few feet away and his bag is clearly still on the bench?

That is why I try my best to avoid opening a can of new balls during social play. Most people do not deserve them.

I get the impression that you are the kind of guy people would enjoy messing with.

Probably some pro who wanted fresh, live balls for his next junior lesson.

    It is obvious what happened:

Two guys left the court and saw a can of new balls obviously forgotten by someone. "Hey, we just got our lucky day!" said one to the other, "You can say that again, no point in leaving them behind!" while he snatched the can and both laughed and left the court.

The moral: Don't leave your things unattended because before you know it they are gone!

Question: What would you do if you find a can of new balls and nobody is around? Go to the newspaper and place a full page ad saying "I found an opened can of tennis balls"? Drop them off at the local police station and demand a investigation to discover the owner? Print a "I found balls" flyer and hang them on every tree you could find in a 6 mile radius?

Come on now, we are talking about a $3+ can of opened balls.

Firstly, you left the court for 10 minutes, which a court of law would consider abandoned property.

Secondly, you didn't see the "two guys" pick up the balls. So if you wanted to prosecute, this circumstantial evidence would likely not result in a conviction.

Another option is that the "two guys" thought the balls were theirs.

Could little kids have stolen the balls?
Are you sure the two guys were the only chance of being a guilty party?
Your back was to the court.
You should be happy you didn't leave your entire tennis bag on the bench.

    Yep, it's a tragedy...

...compared to the loss of one can of tennis balls, by whatever method, the fact that, in 2010-2012, nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world were undernourished, obviously means nothing...

No no the balls were not in the can. They were against the fence in three different places. Someone had taken the trouble to collect them.

I was standing a few feet away! And if was indeed the two guys, not one of the mixed dubs people, they had seen me hitting serves next to them for at least half an hour!

You can bet most of those 870 million aren't even 3.5 players.

The two guys are long time old 4.5 players in the club who usually don't talk to anyone. They would be the last people to even touch others' balls, one would think. But it looks almost certain they must have been the ones.

So, how are you serving with the Longbody.
Sorry about the loss of the balls.
Next time you see those old fart 4.5's, you might consider confronting them about your lost balls.

You practice serves with three balls? Is this some sort of cardio workout collecting the balls over and over as well?

    1. Wilson balls? Gross.
    2. Did they not know it was you? Sureshs. THE sureshs, from talktennis?
    3. What kind of a world is this? One where people are selfish, inconsiderate idiots who assume that if something is unattended it is theirs. Sorry man. And iirc, you're down in Texas, right?...where the people are generally really nice. Sorry.
    4. Grand scheme of things, though, it's just a three buck lesson. Charles Barkley might call this a white people problem. Still turrble, though. Just turrble.
    5. Now, as for your line about not opening a fresh can for social play...i disagree. I think a match with friends calls for a fresh can of the best kind of ball. At my club and park, that is a penn marathon or a dunlop gp. Please don't let this couple of idiots color your view.

Well there you go, divine providence for putting your bag on the bench! I must commend whoever snatched your previously new balls because it has seminated the most hilarious thread I've ever seen here, bravo!

I'm not quite buying the premise though, who practices their serve with one new can of balls?--Donald Trump maybe? Most players have about a dozen used balls with some fuzz left on them in their bags for practice. Or they have a hopper or a bag with about fifty balls for serious service practice.

There is some news on the stolen balls, the police got involved and they rounded up the usual suspects.

They published a picture, it's a shot in the dark but perhaps Sureshs recognizes the perpetrator:

Seems the second guy from the left in the black leather coat looks pretty suspicious!

Yes. Many reasons for that. I have a hopper with 72 balls, but don't feel like carrying it around (or picking up that many balls at one go). The balls have become black and dirty because I used them for practice one day years ago when there was a forest fire raging nearby. I wore one of those paper masks and hit serves, while the ground was covered with soot and planes carrying water were flying nearby. The balls became covered with soot.

So I find that using just 3 balls and switching sides gives me a lot of workout and I don't have to haul the hopper in my trunk which doesn't have much space. After switching twice (12 serves, 3 from each court), I will take a "break" and chat with somebody. It was at such a time that the balls were stolen.

Maybe OP has a quality that suggests people are at liberty to do what they want with his balls?

He has so much backspin on his serve that it bounces and them comes right back to him.

He really only needs the one ball.

May I suggest drizzling some laundry detergent over your hopper full of dirty balls, agitating gently, then leaving them out in the rain to rinse. This will make them shiny new and fluffy again. I've been using this method on my shopping cart of Tretorns since the 60's and get constant compliments on the luxuriant softness of my balls.

I threw my hopper balls in the wash machine w/o soap... they came out fine.

Then I threw them in the dryer... makes a heck of a noise, but they come out looking fine.

Oh... and DON'T do this when the wife is home. Trust me.
