Basel starts in a few days, and the field looks really good(even better than Shanghai). Wild Cards are given to Murray, Young and Nishikori. Djokovic, Federer and Fish are in. Youzhny, Wawrinka, Roddick, Troicki, Tipsarevic, Llodra, Gasquet, Berdych and Baghdatis are just a few more names. IMO the tourney should count as a MS1000.

It does seem a bit odd that a 500 event like Basel has attracted all this attention. It seems to be a bit like Queens which, although only a 250 event, usually attracts lots of top players lumbering up for Wimbledon. Maybe Nadal should do the decent thing and play Valencia to balance things out a little between the two tourneys or would Ferrer and co rather he stayed away?

Valencia has far more depth. The last non-commitment direct entry at Valencia was #40, the last direct entry at Basel was #51. Basel is nowhere near the quality of any MS1000.

And Valencia is fine without Nadal.

Well saying is nowhere near the quality of a MS1000 is ridiculous. It`s not like this field is much weaker then the Shanghai event. Also this tourney is a better way to prepare for the WTF then Valencia for the top players as the conditions and the balls are similar to London.

It's a treat to have BOTH strong fields in the same week...almost like a major w/o easy early rounds...will be tricky for the elites coming off long layovers.

What does the draw say, can I be told who meets whom at the semi-final stage?

Can't seem to access the bottom half of the draw on your link. Nothing up on the official website yet.

I assume from this that Murray is seeded #2?

But as Roger usually falls in Novak's half of the draw, this would seem to put an end to the conspiracy theories!

Federer is in Murray's side because Nadal is not in the draw, simple as that.

If Murray can get through that test of Haase/Wawrinka etc I could see him showing another GOAT'ing 6-0 set display.

**IF** he gets through the matches first...

Djoko is the STRONG favorite easily. I dunno on what planet Fed (or anyone else) can be favored over Djoko in any tournament.

For heaven's sake, the guy has lost 3 matches in a year, and 2 were because of injury..

Agreed. As much as I would like to see Roger win this he most likely will not. It will be between Cvac and Murray with Cvac being the obvious favorite by some margin.

No doubt that Djokovic has had maybe one of the best year's ever!

But he has not played for a while and this is his first event back since having to pull out of the Davis Cup!

Yes he is a great champion but despite some of his performances this year he is also not a super human.

Federer isnt far off beating Novak anyway, check out the US Open semi final and he did inflict the won defeat on Novak that wasnt through injury! add to that he is playing in his home town at a tournament where he plays so well and his favourite time of year, that is why I make him my pick!

Possibly the greatest trick shot I've ever seen. What round of the tourney and I'm guessing Fed won the match?

Yep Fed won 76 61. It was QF of Basel 2002.

It was a humiliating experience for Andy I am sure. Fed hit 3 consecutive winners on him after that trick shot to break him

He played last year, too. He beat Nalbandian in the quarters before falling in the semis — to Federer, of course.

This is probably the best field Basel's ever had. Should be a great tournament for a 500 if everyone comes in healthy. I'd say Murray has the edge since he's been playing so well while Fed and Djokovic have been out. On the other hand, his draw is much harder than Novak's with all those qualifiers in the top half.

I would love to see Fed bring on his A-game and make a clean sweep through the tour finals.

Well, I've always sort of liked the tournament in Basel. The red indoor hardcourt is a nice break this late in the season, and if the seeds hold up then there's bound to be some good matches.

Roger can't be as sharp as Murray at the moment. Djokovic will also not be as sharp but still, he's Djokovic. I think Murray has the toughest draw - will be exciting. Murray, Nole final, Murray ftw

As Colin and others have said, the draw tempers Murray's recent good form.

I'm going to say Roger takes his hometown title again.

Roger will play @ 1830 local tomorrow for those who are interested.

lol what "all those qualifiers"? There are only 2 in Novak's section and he'll play only 1..

Imo Fed will win this, he's got easy draw to the SF as well and Murray could very well burnout until then with pretty much tough draw, Nole is rusty.

One quarter (or 25%) of Novak's half of the draw is made up of qualifiers. Zero or (0%) of Rog/Murray's half is made up of qualifiers. Novak doesn't have Rog or Murray in his half, Rog and Murray do.

It is not unreasonable to infer from these facts that Novak's half might not be as strong as Rog/Murray's half.

I really hope Federer takes this, but I wouldn't be too disappointed to see Murray take it either.

As much as I like Djokovic and as exciting as his run at the start of the year was, I'm starting to get a bit bored now...

I voted Murray, but then I looked at his draw. It's pretty tough.

Perhaps his recent form will still take him through to the SF though. I can see him slaying Roger, but Novak will be tough if he's fully fit.

Its funny because you answered your own question.

Roger was the only one to beat him at 100%, and thus why people are picking Roger. :)

In the end Roger lost to Novak at the USO, but as we all know Roger had the match in the bag, and in a best of 3 format I don't see him losing indoors, in his hometown, against the guy who just made him look like a choke.

I think we can all agree that Federer is the only person capable of taking out Djokovic at this point in time since he is the only one to defeat Djoker without ret. this year. He also had match points at the US Open. I reckon if Djoker slips even only a little and federer doesnt choke fed will win.

No - I don't think we can agree on this as it is the equivelant of 'only someone who has won a slam can win a slam' i.e. it's a logical absurdity.

Does Roger have the best chance of beating Novak? Probably. Is he the only person who is capable of beating Novak? No.

If Muzzay can win this tourney, I think he will be the big favorite going into the WTF. He has about the toughest draw of the top 4 seeds.
