I always thought that Boris Becker's serve was at its best early in his career. Check out how far Lendl stands back to return Becker's serve in this clay court match from 1985. He must be 20 feet behind the baseline. I kept waiting for Boris to hit and underhand drop serve.

I felt at the time he was standing unnecessarily far back, too intimidated. Other returners did not stand that far. I think it was a tactical error he rectified as he got used to the pace. Not that his repositioning meant Beckers serve went down in quality. I think that eventually happened to the Becker serve later on when Ivan was no longer viable

Yeah, he done that in Forest Hills 1986. when Noah beat him 6-3 7-5. He stood near the crowd, way back from baseline

Well, it seemed to work in the first game he did it. Becker only managed to handle one of them (the last one where he hit a drop volley) - and only just.

Whatever works for you I guess.

You must have read my mind. I was going to mention that. Were you at that match?

Incidentally Noah's serve was out of this world in that match. I wasn't sure if some of those serves weren't going into the stands if Lendl didn't get his racquet on them.

Noah always gave Lendl trouble, ever since both were juniors...there were many personnal things involved with both.Even more than with Mc Enroe and Connors.
