Best Ankle Braces/Supports?????

    Hi guys,

    As of recent, I've been having ankle problems. I push off extremely hard and akwardly (I'm a righty). I'm your average, flat-hard-hitting pounder. I've tried to try more conventional service motions, but can't hit as big a serve with them. In fact, I think my max serve speed has gone down a few notches. In the Summer I was hitting 118s, 120s, now they're just above the 100 mark. I haven't changed anything except I know my ankle will take a toll if I keep pushing off with it. Not only does my right ankle hurt, but my left tends to get tweaked as well. Anyway, the truth of the matter is that if I don't get some quality ankle supports, I will not be playing tennis much longer. I really have high hopes to play collegiate tennis next year. BTW, as you know I am a 17 yr old that stands at 5'11. I weigh about in 225 lbs (football player built). I'm trying to lose the weight, but ankle supports, could only help me you know......btw, what's roddick wear? (I know they're ASO, but I went to the website and there is SEVERAL)!!!

    You may want to try Avia shoes. They have this cantilever sole that is great for weak ankles. Can't explain exactly how they work, but they do.

    the Kallassy is what is very popular....pros use them. that will help, but i strongly recommend rigid custom orthotics.

    I recommend going to a podiatrist or sports doctor and have them diagnose what is really going on before investing in custom orthotics. I have used orthotics that I had fitted by a podiatrist for about 15 years primarily because I used to run about 30 miles a week.
    I couple of years ago when I went to a sports doctor about another foot problem we talked about the orthotics I was using and he said while they were good for running they were doing nothing for me when playing tennis. He would have been more than happy to sell me a different orthotic but he stressed that wearing shoes with proper support and cushioning and replacing them when they are worn out is far more important than using orthotics in your shoes. I have since stopped using them in my tennis shoes and have noticed no difference in regard to foot or ankle comfort. Have you considered high top basketball shoes since there are very few high top tennis shoe choices available?

    FWIW, after having major heel problems because of unflexible (NB 800) tennis shoes, which I could have diagnosed had I known this shoe pushup test here:

    I started to use Spenco full-sole orthotics
    and proper shoes (Nike Air Oscillate, which of course Nike discontinued, but I have 5 pairs ...). They are $30 but worth the money.

    My feet are fine now.

    people often have ankle problems because of pronation...custom orthotics alleviate that problem because they make your foot strike the way it should..there is an adjustment period involved, but rigid custom orthotics are the way to go....i had very chronic achilles tendonitis caused by pronation and high arches for years, and it finally went away due to rigid custom orthotics. the worst thing to use is the cheap dr scholls and spenco orthotics because they are not custom fitted and can make the situation worse because of the generic fit, and even if you use their heel lifts, that is bad for tennis too because they are too soft...many many of the pros use fairly rigid custom orthotics and just transfer them from shoe to shoe....find the shoes you like, remove the insert that came with them, slip in your full length orthotics and off you go ..if it werent for these, i couldnt play T at all.

    I've been a runner for decades (I'm 50) and I was prescribed rigid custom-made orthotics by a podiatrist back in 1990. They saved me from chronic injuries and allowed me to log thousands more pain-free miles.

    I picked up tennis six years ago. I love the game. I still run. Even so, I don't use the orthotics in my tennis shoes. Why not? Lateral stability. Running is totally in one one plane (forward), and the shoes -- and orthotics -- are designed to optimize that motion. Tennis has you moving in all directions, especially laterally. The shoes are designed to support this movement. It's not that orthotics do not, but they make your foot sit higher in the shoe, raising the center of gravity, reducing the stability, and raising the risk of rolling an ankle. I trashed my ankles playing basketball. I loved it, but had to quit at age 29 (!). It wasn't worth it anymore. Too much pain, too much time spent re-habbing severe injuries. I wear mid-rise tennis shoes and eschew my orthotics when I play tennis, and it's worked so far. No ankle or foot injuries.
