Best smooth cross poly to pair with multi main

Any suggestions on a good smooth poly (not textured) for pairing with a multi or gut main to try and sustain a little life? I use a 16x18 pattern so would prefer to keep the poly a 16 or 17 gauge.

Ghost Wire, Yonex Polytour Air, HEAD Lynx & Isospeed Cream.
All soft, round polys. Great in hybrid with multi or gut and very comfortable, especially if one has elbow concerns.
(Sorry, I have limited experience with firmer round polys for hybrids with gut/multi, so no suggestions for such).

I am liking Yonex ptpg 120(17g) or 125 (16Lg) with multi right now, but I put my poly in the mains.

I have not found this to be the case in a hybrid. I can play 10-12 hours of high level tennis in 18x20 and keep practicing with it until it breaks.

I agree that it's playable for that long, it's just so different. Possibly more because of how good it is for the first few hours than how cr@p it is after 10, but the change is huge.

I actually used it crossed with gut for almost a year. The big problem for me was when I either restrung a racquet or picked up a fresh one, it required such a huge adjustment.

16g Ghost Wire. Better yet Prince XP, it's 15g and my multi setups last the longest with it as a cross.
Although I use Prince XC primarily, I have used Beast XP(now called Tour XP) and it lasts and lasts especially the 16g version. Too bad I had a reel of that and sold it prematurely.

XP was the Beast that gave me really bad tennis elbow :) My own fault really because as a newbie I had no clue back then and the folks at pro shop were just as clueless. That injury led me to buy my first stringer, this forum, and this deep, deep rabbit hole which I'll likely never recover .... LOL

You're right XP (and XC) does last and last and last ... until your elbow falls off ... hahahahaha

Head Hawk, yes it’s not a soft poly, but with multi mains, it’s pretty alright comfort-wise, and performs and keeps tension well

how does head hawk touch compare to head hawk? I’ve heard a bit softer but not as long playability duration

Counter-intuitive, I know, but some textured poly cut the mains waaaaay slower. Not all of them, thought.
Solinco Diamond Rough is very smooth yet textured, and it adds by its nature some friction points ; more friction points = less heat per friction points = a little more longevity.

A famous stringer told me that, a few decades ago, a Swiss player was breaking his gut main/LuxBBO cross in 15min. The guy switched his cross to a textured Luxilon string, and gained about 20min of play. It was Roger himself!

Take care

I think it probably relates mostly to how sharp the poly string edges are with regards how quickly it shreds through the multi/gut. Something like Lynx Tour that is a six-sided poly but feels more like a round is much less wearing than say Solinco Confidential whjch can cause micro cuts to fingers when stringing.

Add Oehms Alu Pearl Rough to the list. It is an eight lobed clover cross section, slick, soft, comfortable and fairly inexpensive. I’ve been using for a couple months now with VS mains and noticed no notching or cutting on the gut mains.

After using Alu Power a few more times I agree with you. One warm-up session and a match (roughly 3 hours) and it does play differently.

Yep, that's what I found. For me it's more a function of how good it is when fresh than how bad it is after 3 hours, but the difference was huge.

Kirschbaum Max Power is the best cross string I have found to pair with multi or gut mains. I keep looking for something better but haven’t found it yet.

I’ve experienced short playability duration with wilson revolve...the string just dies after a few hrs :-/

This is one of the reasons I use Revolve. But I use it in flexy racquets under solinco shaped strings.
Yonex Poly Tour Fire is also a good cross.

What tension do you like? In what racquet head size and string pattern?

48 lbs is the sweet spot cross string tension for me in a Head graphene 360+ prestige mid. Anything higher and the stringbed starts losing feel, locks with mains and they break prematurely, and trajectory is too low. Anything lower and spin increases but consistency is lost due to trajectory being too high after initial tension loss.

Thanks - that’s helpful. I play gut/poly at 50 lbs on both. With Max Power cross, I’m thinking of doing 50/45lbs since Max Power holds tension so well.

No problem man, something I always do when dialing in tension with cross strings is to first adjust the tension based on the trajectory of my shots.

Kirschbaum Evolution. A reel is dirt cheap and it comes prestretched so you don’t have to worry about it changing playability before your mains break.
