I play at 4.5 level and break strings too often. Can someone tell me what the best stringing machine is for less that $150? I know that there won't be many features like electronic/constant pull, etc - all I am looking for is a basic machine that can do the job.

Gamma X-2 at about 140. 5 year warranty

Klippermate at 135 or blems for 125. Lifetime warranty on both

Eagnas sells about 3 different models the Hawk 10 ($95), Hawk 20 (140), and Hawk 26 (150). The hawk 20 and 26 have ratcheting linear ball bearing string grippers, which issupposed to be easier on the string and make it a little quicker. Eagnas warrants the clamps for 2 years and the rest of the mechanical parts for 5.

It seems that the Klipper is hard to beat with lifetime warranty. And the drop weights with no clutch or moving parts are less likely to break down if maintained properly.

Lifetime warranty on the machine and all tools with it (clamps, pliers, awl, start pin, brake pin) plus Klipper's legendary after sales service and support make it an attractive purchase.

They all have pros and cons. But if you are a young man, with plenty of playing time ahead of you, save up some more money and get something beyond this level. Just my two cents. And look at the SP Swing.

Both the K-mate and Gamma have pros and cons; neither is better than the other.

LIFETIME WARRANTY - yes I'll second that. I'm in the tenth year of using the Klippermate and the original start pin broke into two pieces. I purchased a second start pin a few years back because with some racquets you need two to do the job correctly. I emailed the company and told them the pin broke and that the second was showing signs of wear. In a few days two new start pins showed up in the mail. No hassle, no cost to me, just great customer service.

You know, the old Klippermate vs. Gamma $150 beaner machine is getting so old and so tired, that a dropweight buyer would do well to just do a search.

I have no idea why, by now in 2008, the TW moderators here just don't stick up a FAQ on the subject.

The first center main under tension is clamped to the start pin. Works well and is better than the double pull of the center mains advocated by Silent Partner.

I've had a klippermate passed down to me, and I estimate it's been used for the last 20 years, and still works fine... I haven't had to change anything more than the clamps. A bunch of folks mentioned the lifetime warranty, but I doubt you'll ever need to use it :)

Additionally klippermate sells an optional carrying case (which I thought was convenient when I've travelled for tennis - eg. when my USTA team makes it to regionals or more; or just for general storage)

I eventually also got the stand which is more comfortable than stringing on the kitchen table (which I did for a number of years).

I definitely see myself passing this down to my kids if they ever get interested in tennis :)

Actually I had a minor issue with the string gripper jaws, mentioned it to Klipper, and 1 week later my new jaws arrived here in Australia. Didn't ask for new jaws - just posed a question, and hey presto, new jaws despatched. After sales service and support to die for.

I just bought mine 4 months ago, but I just went to the Alpha sales site and didn't see it listed. I haven't heard that they were discontinued--if so it's news to me--but it looks at least like they don't have any in stock right now.
