Who is the best female player to never win Wimbledon. For me it is between:

Seles- best player to not win Wimbledon, but probably only about 7th or worse grass player not to.
Mandlikova- best grass court player to not win Wimbledon, but no better than distant 3rd best player not to.
Henin- close 2nd best player to not win Wimbledon, close 2nd best grass courter behind Hana to not win Wimbledon

I chose Henin as she was the best combination of the two (best player and best grass court player to not win Wimbledon).

The other candidates I can think of are:

Sanchez Vicario
Sabatini
Sukova
Clijsters
Shriver
Capriati

Adding them up by the two seperate determining factors I get:

Best players point blank: 1. Seles, 2. Henin, 3. Clijsters, 4. Sanchez Vicario, 5. Mandlikova, 6. Capriati, 7. Sabatini, 8. Sukova, 9. Shriver

Best grass courters: 1. Mandlikova, 2. Henin, 3. Sabatini, 4. Sukova, 5. Shriver, 6. Sanchez Vicario, 7. Capriati, 8. Clijsters, 9. Seles

Adding the numbers of both you get with lowest number best you get:

Henin 4
Mandlikova 6
Sabatini 10
Sanchez Vicario 10
Seles 10
Clijsters 11
Sukova 12
Capriati 13
Shriver 14

I say Sabatini. Not only did she have a Wimbledon title at her fingers, but her game was seen as a natural on that surface. Sabatini not winning at least one was one of the great lost chances in the Open Era.

She really blew that 91 Wimbledon final to Graf. Served for it twice. Such a shame. She and Novotna are both major underachievers, should have won more majors.

That is one thing I atleast respect about Sharapova. Contrary to what her deluded fanboys fantasize about she never had the talent to dominate womens tennis or be an all time great, but she got the absolute most out of her abilities.

Well, that's true--Sharapova has always suffered from limited ability, but she continued to try, even when she was outclassed throughout her career.

Tracy Austin and Mary Pierce were total grass mugs. You always have some odd selections though.

Sharapova has no middle ground, she is either brilliant or pretty ordinary. So she has done great to win all 4 slams

You said best female players never to win Wimbledon. I listed them. And how was Austin a "grass mug?" She was a 2-time Wimbledon semi finalist and won Eastbourne twice. Dan Maskell said in 1977, after Evert beat Austin at Wimbledon, that he would be very surprised if Austin never won Wimbledon in the future.

Surprised at Seles having so many votes. Seles was just not that good a grass court player. Then again people probably have their own critierias, for some it would be best player point blank with no specific consideration to their grass court skills, for some just best grass court player (although in that case Hana should have way more votes but most on this forum probably didnt even follow tennis during her prime), and for some like me a combination of the two.

My vote is Gabby Sabatini. Great from the baseline and very good at the net. She also looked great when she was all sweaty and not wearing a bra. :)

Henin

2 finals( she should have 3, 2007 was an utter embarassment) and in 2006 She clobbered Mauresmo in the first set and then let her level drop letting Amelie back in. Her own fault, but that was her year to win it.

She was not a grass-court player at all - certainly not the fast grass from that era. In fact she was a loopy baseline slugger forever until she learned to volley and won her sole major chip-n-charging at the US Open. After that she played diverted back to her old ways for the most part.

She generally did better on slower court majors than faster ones. Five FO semifinals and 4 AO semifinals. Only 2 Wimbledon semifinal showings.

She reached the SF four times: 1986, 1990, 1991 and 1992.
Clay was her best surface, especially at the beginning of her career, I agree.

Which tennis player doesn't wear a bra while playing? Actually, with Sabatini, it's not difficult to know that she had one given how soaked (and transparent) her shirts used to become after a few games.

She was outclassed throughout her career, yet has a winning record over Venus williams, the woman who won "the crown prize of tennis" 5 times.

I always thought she wasn't wearing a bra because her nipples were visible all the time. Plus her boobs were bouncing up and down so much, I had to visit a physical therapist for my 12-year old neck, for nodding at least 1000 times in every one of her matches.

Depends on what you are judging it on. If it's by the players with the best careers who never won it, it's Seles, followed by Henin. If it's the best grass court player never to win it, it's Hana Mandlikova, who made multiple finals, but ran into a very motivated Evert one year and lost to Martina in another. But Hana won the other three Slams, including winning the AO on grass.

LMAO

Thread as crappy as Navratilova-piggyback-rider's level (which wasn't even half as good as the likes of Mandilkova and Tracy Austin

You're right. I love her as a player, great tennistalent, beautiful strokes, but her shots were not suited for grass. Yes she was a very good volleyer, but the rest of her game consisted of loopy topsspin shots. The reason she gave Steffi so much troubles, cause she had won (if I remember correctly) 5 matches in a row against her and she troubled Graf more than Seles. The following year Steffi had a much easier match against her.

I would say Hanna Mandlikova, such a talented shotmaker, a real grasscourt player. Monica good as she was was not really a grasscourtplayer, I think she did very well when she beat Navratilova in 1992.

Seles and Henin are the obvious answers.

Can't see why people choose Gabby though; she wasn't exactly in her element on grass. I'd put in a third vote for Mandlikova, just because she was such a joy to watch with her uncomplicated, fluid style. Compared to Mandlikova's lazy elegance, the current women's players all seem like they are hacking meat with blunt instruments in an abattoir. Poor Hana would die of agony if she had to listen to Sharapova's and Azarenka's shrieks.

The only 3 reasonable choices are Seles, Henin, and Mandilikova. Given that Henin is a far superior player to Mandilikova, and a far superior grass court player to Seles, she is the easy choice. Even if Seles might be a slightly better player, and Hana might be a slightly better grass court player.

She also would have won in 2004 or 2005 (or maybe both) without her viral infection.

I am not surprised she isn't winning this poll as she is generally hated by all Serena fans, and this seems to be another Serena fanboy forum.

Seles is far too weak on grass to be winning this poll. She wasn't even a good enough grass player to win Wimbledon. She made it past the quarters only once, a fluke final with an easy draw where she managed only 3 games. A player has to atleast have the capability to win a big title on the surface without it being a laughable thought, to possibly be the best to not win there, regardless how great an overall player they are.

Seles of course, but she should not be on that list since she would have won at least 1994 one if there was no stabbing.

I doubt she would have won in 2005 or even 2004(slight chance). No way she would have beaten venus on grass considering their H2H on that surface and everywhere else. She might have had the chance in 04 but i rather more likely believe she would have been beaten by sharapova or serena on route to the final or serena would have demolished her in the final.
She was a good grass player but nowhere near the level to ree and vee
