Expecting OSU to win, but based on the regular season scores it's not out of the realm of possibility that IL wins.

Illini win at 3 dubs, 1 and 2 show bucks up a break.

    Edit, dubs point to OSU.

Scoreboard monkey is at it again - Kobelt went from winning the 1st set 7-5 to losing it 5-7. Metka went from winning the 1st set 6-4 to now being up 6-5.

Hitzlik must be regaining form at #1 after taking mid season time off to recover .

Closes out Kobelt to tie match at 1-1.

but osu is really beatable in ncaas by any Top10 team in my eyes
they are good on all positions plus doubles, but they never win on all courts easily, osu could go Final 4 maybe even to the finals if they get the #2-seed, but also could fall earlier in sweet 16 or easily in Elite 8

Saw projections that even with a win over Illini, they could fall to #4 seed.

    Is that right Topdawg?

even an early rematch with illinois in sweet 16 would not be out of the world then

With a win over ILL I think they'd be either 1 or 2. That one other scenario I ran had Duke beating UNC in the ACC semis and USC beating UCLA so since those didn't happen that would shift the numbers. UNC beating Duke helped Ohio State because they'll come up from 9th to 7th in the first go around.

Report from Colette Lewis on the Big 10 Final http://tennisrecruiting.net/article.asp?id=1927

    Some highlights:

"Our math today was (courts) 1, 5 and 6 and doubles, our easiest way to get out of here. But every match you play there is a surprise." (Tucker)

"Illinois assistant coach Marco Asse was ejected from the match for physical contact with Ohio State assistant Justin Kronauge on Callahan's court."

"From what I hear, he pushed our guy," Tucker said. They've got it on tape, so I'm sure they'll review it. I didn't see anything, but Coach Asse's a pretty good coach and a class act, so we'll have to see what happens."

""I'm super frustrated," said Dancer, in his ninth year as head coach at Illinois. "That's mostly because I think we have a better team right now and we got outcoached. I think that's all there is to it. Outprepared and outcoached on the day, and you feel like it's your fault as a coaching staff, how we prepared."

Where did Tomas Hanzlik go this year - injury? He played in the top half of Penn State's lineup a year ago but didn't play at all this spring and wasn't listed at all on PSU's NCAA roster which was 12 deep.

Yes, it is baffling, Hanzlik was noticeably absent from psu lineup this spring. In 2013 he played #2 vs? OSU and took Rola to 3 sets.
Looks like after a very average fall including lopsided losses to close out October, he has not been included anywhere in the psu lineup.

Hanzlik had a wrist injury that kept him inactive all spring season. Don't know about his future.

    New Recruits / Pre-season outlook

Won't be long now and teams will start practice. I thought we could all post a quick couple lines about our favorite Big Ten team.

Mine is Minnesota. The Golden Gophers return nearly their entire roster and all starters from last year's team. They were strong at the top of the lineup and uncharacteristically weak towards the bottom. With some development from last year's freshman, the Gophers could be one of the stronger teams in the conference.

Additionally, they signed Felix Corwin, a nice recruit who should be in the starting lineup and may solve the problems they had last year at the 5 and 6 spot.

Mine is Penn State. This past season was the first season I followed them fairly closely, as it happens. They graduated 3 seniors: Russell Bader, Ramy Labna*, and Chris Young. Bader played #1 doubles with Leo Stakhovsky, and #2 singles. Ramy played sparingly. Young was a part of PSU's very strong #2 doubles team that only lost a few matches this spring.

Tennis recruiting doesn't list any commitments for this year.

This upcoming season, the majority of their team will be Sophomores and Juniors. Having Leo Stakhovsky around is huge, since he played both #1 spots. But the question is, who will step up and fill the doubles lineup now that Bader and Young are gone? #3 doubles wasn't always a set pair throughout the spring, so there is some depth. They just need a few guys to step up and play higher, which I think will happen. Winning the doubles point was key to their success last year. As for singles, I'm not so sure. Leo at #1 is great. He tailed off at the end of the season, but he'll be back. #2 I suppose is going to be Alex Fennell, a sophomore. He went 16-10 in the spring at #3 this past season. Matt Barry was fairly dominant at #4, so he could slide up as well. After that, it gets dicey. PSU was weak at 5 and 6 last year. Unless something changes, it will only be worse this year.

If Tomas Hanzlik is still there and is healthy he'd be a top 3 player for the Nits.

Hm, I forgot about him. Yeah, he should be a senior this year. I think I remember reading he was injured this spring? I'll have to check on that. But yeah, him playing would be a big help. If he could play 2, and keep Alex at 3 and Barry at 4, that leaves 5 and 6 as weak spots like last year. But maybe with more experience, the guys down there will do better this time around.

Hard to say. He and Sydow were two solid recruits last year that really did not step up and win any matches at 5 and 6. I've seen some players come back after their freshman year and really take a step forward like Weber did last year but he will have to step it up to get in the lineup. Of course, recruiting ratings are difficult to judge but Corwin seems to be the type of recruit that will be in the starting lineup, making it more difficult for Lynn to get in the lineup.

Since the ITA preseason polls were released...

Penn State is featured twice. Stakhovsky is 29th in the singles rankings, and the doubles team of him and Alex Fennell(??) is ranked 45th. I haven't followed college tennis for very long, so maybe this is a normal occurance, but...Fennell is a sophomore who played less than 10 doubles matches last year. How does he go from not playing doubles to being a part of a ranked doubles team? Anyway, I'll be going to see how the team looks in a few weekends when they compete in the Penn Invitational.

Buckeye Chris Diaz, was placed as a lucky loser in the consolation draw and won four matches to advance to the finals where he dropped his match to McDonald of Ucla.
The Ohio State roster has now been posted on the OSU official site.
    http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-tennis/mtt/osu-m-tennis-mtt.html

Two new additions Freshman mikael Torpegaard, Hugo di feo, and red shirt freshman, Matthew Mendez will be pressing hard for playing time. Returning letter winners include a solid core of #2 Pollannen, #3 Steinbach, #4 Diaz, #5 Metka, and #6 Callahan.
Peter Kobelt will be a tough loss, and Tucker's reputation as developer of tennis talent will surely be tested for the Buckeyes to extend the longest home win streak in NCAA history and a 10th consecutive B1G title.
The Illini are absolutely loaded and must be considered early favorites in the Big 10.

    Buckeyes schedule is loaded!
    http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-tennis/sched/osu-m-tennis-sched.html
Extending the longest home winning streak in NCAA history will require the 2015 buckeyes to somehow rise to a level of success in facing 5 highly talented opponents in c'bus-- auburn, Tulsa, Kentucky, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma!

The big ten road matches will also test OSU's regular season conference dominance as they will travel to psu, Illinois, and Michigan.

OSU has no #1 player anymore and i doubt Pollanen or Steinbach can be good at #1 and #2, Diaz looks quite good right now, Metka and Callahan are really good stones in the end. The 2freshman are really talented Pollanen played all junior grand slams, and once beat Brayden Schnur 6-1,6-2 there (also schnur is younger as him) and Di Feo the same, even little better in results, bot Top25 junior players. Amazing recruiting !

    Big Ten Indoors

This is taking place starting tomorrow at the Baseline Tennis Center and runs through Monday (quite sure the only amazing indoor tennis facility with a hockey arena on the back side) on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

In the past years, some of the better players have not attended this event. Please post what players your Big Ten school is bringing to this tournament.

For Minnesota, i believe they will be entering their entire lineup except 22nd ranked Leondro Toledo who will be participating in the National Indoor Tournament next weekend.

Minnesota has live stats and video streaming on 6 of their 12 indoor courts. go to gophersports.com and select men's tennis.

The Indoors has wrapped up with Minnesota freshman Felix Corwin defeating fellow Minnesota freshman Matic Spec in the singles final. Spec knocked off top seeded Dusty Boyer of Nebraska in one semi final, while Corwin beat Josh Silverstein of Iowa in the other semi.

As has been the case in the last several years, many top players elected to sit out and Illinois, Indiana and Penn State didn't attend. Too bad as this could be a very good event if all the schools got behind it.

    Big Ten Indoor Observations

Hard to get a read on how these results may be an indicator of the spring season but here are a couple of observations.

Iowa had a pretty impressive showing for a program that has not been great for quite a period of time.

Minnesota dominated the event but also had more of their top players entered than most schools (although their number 1 and likely 2 did not play). Minnesota's two freshman who made the singles final were very impressive - as much as the way they carried themselves as the way they played. With Minnesota returning their entire lineup from last year and the addition of these two freshman, Minnesota will be a force to be reckoned with this spring.

Kudos to Dusty Boyer of Nebraska who was the only highly ranked player with the courage to show up and play and put his ranking at risk with no real upside. I hope more players take his lead in future years.

The fact that he grew up and played high school in MN may have had something to do with his decision to play in this tournament. Just food for thought.

Michigan with a depleted roster right now with just 7 guys. They lost Norrie to TCU and I thought both Vlad Stefan and Justin Rossi had another year (both were showing as juniors last year) but neither is on the roster. Carter Lin was a 5* they signed but he hasn't shown up yet on the roster either. Plus Steinberg just lost his assistant to Indiana.

Purdue only has 6 on its roster and 2 of those guys aren't D1 talents.

It'd be hard to see either of these teams improving on last year unless they get some January add-on's.

I'd say at best the conference will have 5 teams that will qualify for the NCAAs and likely probably just 4. Ohio State, Illinois, Northwestern and Penn State should make it with Minnesota right on the cusp.

Count on both Michigan and Purdue having several additions in January. How much of an impact they will have is another question.
