Minneapolis will be an important place this coming weekend as the Gophers play Illinois on Friday with a chance to grab a share of the lead in the Big 10. They follow that big match up with another big one against Northwestern on Sunday as the Cats are right behind OSU and Minny.
I believe Minnesota has a chance against Illinois, though Illinois is rightfully heavily favored. The Gophers are strong in doubles (they've won the doubles point something like 19 out of 23 matches) and have an experienced senior at #6 who played #4 last year. These are two weak spots for Illinois so the Gophers could have two points - now they just need to find two more.....
I think they can win at 1 as well assuming indoors, Toledo is a good player, very good indoors
The gophers haven't lost at home yet this year, have they?
This will be a tough one.
They have not. However, they have not played anyone close to Illinois at home this year.
It will be interesting to see what lineup the Gophers choose. Spec started the year at #4 but has recently played #2.
Correct, he is undefeated in Big Ten play and can hang with anybody in the country, really. Realistically, they probably need him to pull off the upset if they are going to win.
The Gophers have to win the doubles point if they are to have a chance.
Are they playing this match indoors? Why? Isn't the weather supposed to be nice? Does playing indoors favor the Gophers?
I assume they are playing indoors because the match starts at 6 - not enough time to finish outside in the daylight.
Since most Big 10 teams play most of their matches indoors I wouldn't think it favors either team.
Gophers win doubles
This is going to be a tight one. The doubles point was big.
Gophers win 5, Illinois wins 1, 4. Match is 2-2. Everything else going 3
This scoreboard from their site is maybe the worst I've ever seen. It's like they haven't changed it since 1995.
Illinois wins 3. Minnesota up a break at 6. 2 is even
Gophers up a break in both matches
Gophers win 2. 5-5 at 6 to decide it
Going to a tie break at 6
Wow! Shocker out of Minnesota, So unless an upset in Sunday's last matches we are looking at a 3 Way tie for first in the B1G regular season?
Sounds like it was a great match. Congrats to the Gophers.
Looks like a 3 way for 1st place in the B10.
Cool. Gophers won the big 10 in 1995
Freshman Matis Spec was huge at 2 as was Froment at 6 who saved two match points. How Gossea is ranked 73rd is a mystery to me. He is a great player- kind of old school
Great match, was it outdoors?
Illinois overrated but so is texas a&m. Both sit at 3 & 4 and i do not know why.
Nice - you always have something pleasant to say about the Illini.
Inside. It didn't finish until 10
Minnesota has northwestern tomorrow and they are good so we will see.
Agree. Illinois 9th year senior Bazarnik gets rather tight under pressure. Go Gophers!!
Tennis is funny. He missed wide by a few inches on match point. 6 inches the other way and he is a hero. the gophers had to have that point and they barely got it. The atmosphere was electric
Not matter but i just not think they are top3 as teams like uva uga are better. Maybe even tcu & usc are better. Same for a&m. It is my real opinion. Not to insult anyone here.
I feel that it's tough to say that any team would be in the definitive top 3 or even top 10 this year. Even Oklahoma and Baylor (the teams who seem to have been winning the most) can and have lost to other teams on other days. I have my own opinions on who would win the majority of the time and many teams are contenders for these spots, but I think they have earned their ranking. This year of college tennis has been particularly interesting as upsets have been aplenty.
The gophers were ranked 32nd and the win last night was no fluke. Some of the guys didn't even play their best. College tennis is very even
Osu wins again the big10 title!!! also it is a share
Indiana in a fight with Michigan State. Can't afford to lose that. Could kill their bubble chances.
Who won between minn and nw?
Minny took dubs and more i not know
Pathetic LiveStats job today from Minnesota and Indiana. 5-2 win by Michigan State at Indiana according to the LiveStats, but they must have a score reversal at one of the courts, else MSU won 4-3 by playing a match tiebreaker instead of a 3rd set when the score was 3-3. No scores at all from Minnesota. Bush league.
If the Illini are overrated, what does that say about your beloved buckeyes, whom Illinois TROUNCED twice this year? I guess tOSU shouldn't be ranked in the top-twenty this year.
BIG 10 tournament next week should be very entertaining and fun indeed...........almost as fun as pac-12 tournament. will there be webcam coverage ?
horrible loss for Indiana
I don't know what to make of the Indiana/MSU score.
Yeah I was trying to find the Minnesota link and all it kept showing was the Illinois/MN scoring. If a joker like me can run live scoring for the Missouri Valley Finals then someone at a school with 35000 students should be able to do the same for Minnesota.
So what's the seeding for the Big10 Tournament with Ohio State, Illinois and Minnesota all co-champs
Minnesota NU was outside hence no live stats
Gophers beat the Cats in a thriller with Freshman Felix Corwin taking a 3rd set tie breaker in the deciding match Congrats to the Big 10 champion Minnesota Golden Gophers!
Why does outside mean no live stats?
I believe Illinois has the #1 seed. Not sure if tOSU will be seeded 2nd or 3rd.
Minnesota has live stats and video for their indoor courts but not the outdoor courts
Seems like several of the Big 10 schools have run into that issue this year. Michigan State and Ohio State have said the same thing. If there's a cell signal or wifi they should be able to do it just like if it was indoors.
