I wondered if that was the first doubles point Ohio State had lost, but it turns out that it is the third time they lost the doubles.

Notre Dame took a doubles point on March 3:

    1. #1 Blaz Rola/Chase Buchanan (OSU) def. Greg Andrews/Spencer Talmadge (ND) 8-3
    2. Casey Watt/Niall Fitzgerald (ND) def. #28 Devin McCarthy/Ille Van Engelen (OSU) 8-5
    3. Sam Keeton/Billy Pecor (ND) def. Peter Kobelt/Connor Smith (OSU) 8-6

Northwestern took the doubles point on April 15:

    1. Josh Graves/Spencer Wolf (NW) def. #1 Chase Buchanan/Blaz Rola (OSU) 8-6
    2. Raleigh Smith/Alex Pasareanu (NW) def. #23 Devin McCarthy/Ille Van Engelen (OSU) 8-5
    3. Peter Kobelt/Connor Smith (OSU) def. Sidarth Balaji/Tobias Reitz (NW) 8-1

Illinois close to a 4-0 thrashing of Michigan. Obviously the Illini have been saving this effort all season to make the stretch run for the NCAA title.

Very surprised. Not over yet but it seems they will win the right to get thrashed by the Buckeyes tomorrow. Good effort today.

Going into the final today, the Illini have their work cut out for them. Since beating the Buckeyes in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament in '07, the Illini has lost ten straight dual matches to OSU. They were wiped out 0-7 last time they met on April 13th.

A lot, I mean a WHOLE LOT of things will have to happen for Illini to even have a chance of taking the title.

    Fly Illini!

    A) who didn't vote for Novolo? He wasn't in all caps so I am assuming not unanimous

    B) what is an "athlete of the year"?

Illini came to play today picking up 1st sets at 2, 4, 5, and I think serving for it at 6. Can they sustain that is the question.

Nevolo goes down 2 and 2 to Buchanan. Sad to see he may never beat OSU not even once in his college career.

    OSU up 2-0.

Are they playing outside today? Watched Illinois vs. Michigan indoors yesterday. Wasn't able to get back up there today.

Illinois has a legitimate shot at this one with both Hoh and Guignon now up 2-0 in their sets.

Hoh about to make it 3-2, leading 4-0 in the third.

Guignon-Smith tied 3-3 in the second, Guignon won first.

Looks like it's going to come down to Kalmanovich and Blaz. Kalmanovich leading 1-0 in the third.

So, with the right draw, Illinois could make Rnd of 16? They seem to have a lot of potential, but not always play up to it.

On the other hand, they could easily lose before the Round of 16 if the "other" Illinois shows up.

Should be interesting. Nice win today. Even more impressive since they lost the doubles point.

    Yeah, which team shows up?

The team that lost 5-2 to Indiana?

Or the team that beat OSU 4-3?

    Crazy sport.

BTW, what's the deal with the new expanded Khan/Atkins tennis complex at Illinois. They added the 12 Khan courts so they could host the NCAAs. And, they are next year!!

But, why didn't they build some sort of grandstand along the two sets of six courts.? There's those little cement viewing steps, but they should have put in something much more substantial, at least along one set of six courts. True, they can use temporary bleachers, but it all seems so stupid to have not just had better seating incorporated into the plans. It can not have added that much to the cost. I'm not saying they need Georgia-level seating, but something more than what they have.

Looking at the box score from OSU's 7-0 drubbing earlier in the season, you could see that a much closer match was at least an outside possibility based on indivdual match scores. Obviously, any of IL's 4 match wins is a big turn around, BUT at No. 2, Rola of OSU had previously won 6-0, 6-1 over Klamanovich, but lost yesterday. That really wasn't foreseeable based on previous score.

Really goes to show how much on a razor's edge many college tennis matches are. These players are not pros, they do not have the same consistency, even the top guys. Makes it very interesting to watch for sure.

Too bad Ohio State. Maybe someday they'll get over that hump and finally win a championship. Illinois and Michigan remain the only Big Ten teams to win the national title.
