Going for Rusty in three. As well as Blake handled Karlovic, I think Hewitt's on the upswing.

I've made money on Blake all week long. He's +153 and Hewitt is -163. I know Lleyton is 6-0 against James but Blake is playing the best tennis of his life and Hewitt is playing the worst. All their matches have been close; the last time they played was at the AO2005 when Hewitt got to the final and was still a top contender for #1, much has changed since then. I'm going all in on Blake to win in 3 sets.

yeah, surely Blake has it now. 5-1 in the final set. Remember though he's blown good leads before.
Hewitt held so now Blake's serving for the match.....
It's a shame, I was kind've hoping Hewitt could take home the trophy this time.

Yeah it must feel good for him. I remember when they played last year at the Aus Open and Blake got so annoyed with Hewitt that he mimicked his "come on's" and fist pumps, but he still got dumped out of the 2nd round.
You know this puts Blake at no.14 in the world.

Wow well done Blake - his attacking game held together and got the better of the retriever? Did all come down to Blake's serve?

Was it Hewitt at his worst and Blake at his best as someone said earlier?

I love watching Blake play - he really has what can only be described as a thrilling game style. One of the best, just held back by a bit of bad luck and injury over the last few years. And his matchups with Hewitt have always courted controversy with no love lost from either side. This is a breakthrough for him. What was the final score?

If Blake is indeed 14th in the world, that is certainly quite an achievement. Obviously not everyone can sustain the consistency that Roger Federer has attained. But really....to me that's what is separating Blake right now from the elite. There's no doubt he's capable of playing at a similarly high level. However, Blake seems to have letdowns against lower ranked players pretty frequently. However, he's proving he can win some tournaments now consistently.

Match summary: Break after break after breat until there wasn't a break. Then Blake won.

And Hewitt;s serve failed him completely. There was a time a couple of years ago when he had worked on his serve and it was really good.

Yes he did. Beats me where to now for Hewitt. Bet he sees this not as a setback, but a first step on the road back. Back to where, since he is determined to play exactly the same as last year -without his former speed, or enthusiasm. Dumping easy ones into the net, "winners" run down by Blake etc.

Huey Lewis and the News = Losey Hewitt and the Noose

Heh heh. His serve is a strange thing all right. If the pressure really is on it deserts him. And he even without pressure his first serve percentage is rarely more than 50%. Yet it's not a strong serve - he doesn't bang it down - so that doesn't explain its low strike rate. It's his weakest link.

You are absolutely right, he did beef up his serve and attain better consistency - but if he is out of form then it is his serve that suffers.

I recall sitting behind Hewitt at an indoor stadium in Sydney and thought that he pivots so much on the balls of his feet just prior to ball release that during the motion he easily topples or wobbles. Result: ball in net.

I'm as tall as him (5.11) he needs to be more flat footed during the toss, not twist as much, get more height in his service leap, yada yada... he needs me as coach eh? Heh heh.

But why was Blake losing his serve? Why were they trading service breaks? I've always thought Blake's serve a real killer.

Great win by Blake but what's up with Hewitt's serve? It was failing him at AO too.

I've always thought that James' game matched up well against Hewitt's. He's been so close on so many occassions to beating him, but failing in guts every time.

I'm glad that James went into the match with the attitude that he could and should win. And low and behold, he beat the abuntantly unlikable Hewitt. I couldn't be happier.

    Praise was over-the-top

Considering the history of these two players--that racial comment in reference to the black linesman at the US Open a few years ago, I was surprised that Blake called Hewitt one of the greatest of "all-time" in his post-match comments. Hewitt is no where in the league of the great Aussies like Laver, Rosewall, Emerson, Newcombe, or Fraser.

I agree that the "one of the greatest players of all time" comment went a bit far. Hewitt aint that great yet.

Hewitt was on his way. He was #1 for a while, won a few Grand Slams, went away, came back and almost won the Australian on guts alone, was beating everyone except Federer...and now he's a shadow of himself. He's in the top 20 greatest of all time to me. That's still an achievement.

If hewitt's backhand was better there would be less pressure on the rest of his game. He needs to develop a backhand that he can thump consistently. Beats me why he hasnt hired a proper coach to fix his backhand.
