My Jack Russell outsmarts me all the time. She is also a better athlete. Can jump higher than any dog I have ever seen.

A truly bizarre way to summarize the difference between private and public schools. News flash: One of the biggest problems with public schools is that they are not beholden to the student and the family. They are a government near-monopoly. Don't like what they are doing? Tough luck. Don't like the peer pressure at the school? If it is not something illegal, tough luck.

Private schools, on the other hand, have paying customers. The fact that they are willing to cut loose a troublemaker is because the paying customers who want that kid expelled vastly outnumber the lone paying customer who does not want that kid expelled.

    A few questions:

    1. Does Stuyvesant have entrance requirements? Do they have a cross-section of students, who would otherwise have scores at the national average, but by the time they are finished at Stuyvesant their education has stimulated them to have scores of 1400? Or do they have admissions requirements that guarantee that they will score well above the national average, precisely because they are not a cross section of the student population?

    2. Do you know what the SAT measures, and how much it is influenced by high school education and how much it is independent of high school education?

I don't know, but Deiton emailed me the answer "0.5" and asked you to check it out.

Deiton emailed me that this second problem is an ill-formed problem with no solution.

Correct on both counts. The second problem presents an impossible situation.

Ah, the old "how am I ever going to use this in real life" question. You see, learning complex math concepts isn't just meant to be used practically, although plenty of people do (without engineers life would be quite a bit different for all of us) but it's "learning to help us learn".

An analogy that hits home: why teach a tennis player boxing? You're trying to develop certain attributes that will be applicable to tennis, right? Same with complex math, physics, science, literature, etc, but instead of developing your body, your developing your brain. You apply that problem solving ability and knowledge to other areas. People are always looking for a direct practical use for everything. It's like cross-training for our brains. We don't just learn one thing, we learn many.
