Good stuff. I wouldn't want to face Goran's serve even today. Thanks for posting this.

The Luxilon and other poly strings combined with slower courts have led to too much baseline play in my opinion, but there were reasons why the court speed and tennis balls were changed to slow down play.

Great guys, great players there. Thanks for posting it.

But was it really just fifteen short years ago we were all wearing heinous shirts tucked into short shorts? Yechhh.

HEHE :).... man those were ugly, but one must recognize:
you could tell the player for their shirts....
now a days, it is one guy in white and swoosh against one guy in white and stripes...

great video and great contrasting profils too: 2 Wimbledon champs playing great tennis, 1 was a Wimbledon champ early in his career, the other at the end of it.

Just wanted to share my boundless appreciation for the video...
Just watching it makes me want to smack all the fools who said the "modern power game" is killing tennis.
If you ask me, it's being killed now by the similiarity of the speeds of most hardcourts/other "fast" surfaces.

How much does slowing down the court actually help against serves like that, or Sampras? A big serve is a big serve. So, how many of those serve would have Becker or Goran got in play if played on today's Wimbledon grass?

The biggest servers have the largest margin when it comes to slowing down courts. They'll still get their winners, even if a few less. It hurts the less big servers more, because they have less margin and losing those timely service winners hurts.

It's like the golf events lengthening courses because Tiger hits so far. Sure, it makes the holes more difficult for Tiger, but even more difficult for everyone else who don't have the same distance.

Slowing down the courts (and the higher bounce) make more of a difference "if" the return is in play - easier passing shots, less low balls, etc.

I would say it makes a difference...
Not sure how much, to put a figure on it...
Maybe the new courts are around 20% slower?
