Well I have been practicing like crazy trying to get back into Tennis.
Got a machine hit about 25,000 shots now. My game is really progressing
all but consistency in my forehand. Also playing in the league to mix it up.

One day, I'll hit solid topspins and the next if I move, my forehand
    is off again.

    Thoughts on building consistency?

I think you have to play more and emphasize on good form, espacially on days when you're 'off'. It happens to the best of us.

Ball machine or a basket (deadballs) could be used to learn a technical situation, or a tactical situation, and/or it is used to move the player around (court movement while hitting groundstrokes, volleys, etc.). No harm in this, but live-ball is superior than a deadball. Once the practice objective is achieved with basket feeding, it is better if the ball is played out (live ball playing). Remember, the match ball is different than a ball fed out of the basket or a ball machine. "You learn by playing the game, and correct through exercises and drills".

Try using targets and don't use too much power. This will build your control.

I believe aggressive topspin will enable you to hit with power.
