I was just looking at some pics of Srichaphan's Yonexes. Anyone know how he gets such a strange built-up buttcap like that? It's very skinny, and very tall. Maybe balsa wood tacked to the pallet? It must be a bear to wrap correctly.

I use ten wraps of electrical tape, but he obviously uses a whole lot more.

A lot of the pros would use athletic tape.

Yes, same as Kafelnikov did. I strung his rackets once, very strange. And only a basegrip over all this tape.

Yeah I found this one of Kafelnikov where you can kinda see it.

I'm curious as to how they get such a gigantic buildup like that to stay in place with the power these guys hit with. I built up the butts of my X-1s with a single piece of heat shrink and after 1 month they got loose and wiggly. I tried it again with a couple of wraps of sticky grip gauze underneath it hoping that would 'glue' them into place once the heat gun was applied, and it did last a few months longer, but now they've come loose again. I guess a couple staples or tacks is the only permanent solution? If I wanted to try Srichiphan/Kafelnikov's grip style, what size athletic tape should I try?

Do they do it so that when they swing, the racquet wont fly out of thier hands? its seems like it would be uncomfortable to the base of the palm, and wrist. I guess you cn aget used to it, but it is strange.

Well like Muster for instance, would take two additional pieces of tape and from the bottom of the buttcap, make an X which would provide additional support for the build up. Later he would just create the build up by wrapping the grip itself (Kniessl) 3 times. He still put the X on but from what he told me it was just to add additional support for the buttcap.

This thread has made me laugh, since one of the things I like about Yonex is that their butt caps are small!

However, that photo shows the buttcap built up using his grip, not the athlethic tape.

I wrap my overgrip twice around the buttcap before i continue down the shaft, it feels good and works well. And yes, i hated the Yonex buttcaps, i had to wrap those suckers 20 times before the build up was enough. Hewitt builds his up a lot too. My new Head buttcap is perfect for me.

the built up buttcap could easily just be lead tape stacked up over the butt to counterweight his racquet, since he has all that lead tape on the head. Some players also like to have that ridge to define how low they hold the handle...also could provide some security against slippage during serves.

  23. Yes, I seem to remember the Yonex (Super-RD Tour) butt cap being on the meek side. I was sometimes straining a bit to hold onto the frame, and when combined with a slick overgrip, a nice crater was created in the court surface on a service (attempt). Jonny, didn't you get ahold of one of those frames? Anyway, as far as Kafelnikov goes, growing up he was a hockey player and said he was used to the feel of a typical hockey stick. There's really a lot of ways to build up a butt cap, it's one of the fun experiments that can be done with frames, some pros have a favorite way of doing it themselves. By the way, for grip build-up I would bypass electrical tape and use athletic tape or some other sturdy tape in various widths until I found something good. Electrical tape seems like it would slip out of position when wrapped on top of itself, but I could be wrong. Besides, it might be harder to find different widths of electrical tape with which to experiment.

Hey, why yes i do have an SRD Tour 90 and the buttcap is abit unusual but i wasn't sure if the new ones have a slightly different buttcap. Yes if i can find tape like that i may just experiment as anythings worth trying once.

    1. Paradorn is the nicest guy you would ever want to meet. If he has anything to do with his website, he would probably write you back.

    2. I watched him wrap his over grip in Indy. (I was sitting ajacent to him in the players lounge.) He wraps his Super Grap backwards. He starts with the square side on the butt cap (going around a couple of times), and puts the trimmed side with the adhesive at the top. But there's still a build up. under the overgrip. The over grips were on them, when I handled them for the stringers. They reminded me of hockey sticks.

Thanks for the info, now if only we knew what EXACTLY he uses to get the bump

One thing I tried awhile ago before the heatshrink tubing was stager's gaff tape. Similar to duct tape in that it's fabric based, but not slick on the top surface and the glue isn't as messy. Didn't work to well if I remember correctly, but probably no worse than the heatshrink. It was just hard to be consistent with it. It's something like athletic tape but a little meatier and damn expensive ($15 a roll).

It might be fun to try an unusual butt shape like Paradorn. But if people are having problems with the Yonex buttcap, why not try replacing the buttcap entirely? That would probably be a more permanent solution than wrapping tape. Perhaps Paradorn just has his grips redone every week?

    on another note:
Monologuist, could you email me through TW? Thanks for helping me before-

some of those look almost like the end of a baseball bat cut off and added to a tennis racket. I'd bet a handle customizer could do this

maybe he just likes big butts... (and he cannot lie), mayhaps if we try it us other brother's can't deny, either!

Another tape to try is bondage tape. I'm sure many people could imagine what it is used for...

FYI, i heard about this stuff back when I was interested in ear-stretching. (That is another story completely). People use it to wrap around ear "plugs" to size them up (instead of buying new ear plugs).

With my explanation aside, bondage tape appears to be a good solution, it is stretchy and relatively moldable, like electrical tape, but it is actually non-sticky. It sticks to itself extremely well, though, which is why I think it might be a good experiment. A small layer of double sided tape underneath everything on the bare handle/buttcap, and layers and layers of b-tape on top. Any brave souls want to give it a try?

Edit: I suggest against googling for this sort of product unless you are mature enough to handle the results ;)
