As a roving official I've done several ZAT, Champ, SC and adult tournaments. Aside from footfaults, this is what I constantly remind players to do. Especially in junior tournaments. I remind both participants to call out the score prior to serving so the receiver can hear. And what ends up happening? Later, after revisiting their court again, they have a scoring dispute. If it happens again, I remind them I will code them for unsportsmanlike conduct (not obeying an official). As you stated, if there is a dispute you play at a mutually agreed upon point. Usually, there is some griping, but it never comes down to a coin flip.
what I do is I'll call it out for them and if they don't repeat it, then i start stopping them in the middle of their serve and ask what's the score until they start calling it out.
