Can anybody explain to me why Fed looked like a zombie on court today

Well ı said that his performance and the way he won the match against Del po was strange.Nearly 5 hours. The funny defence Fed fans came up with is the match wasnt all that brutal and physical. So what that means he cant be all tired because the Del po match wasnt all that tough so he clearly outplayed and Murray today showed how to beat Fed with an ease on grass.Too bad nerves got better of Murray in Wimbledon final.

I'm not going to say he tanked, but I don't think he was really willing to pay the price to win. Roger needed to win in straights. Murray played solid B+ tennis, and it was going to take a very good performance from Roger over 4-5 hours to win. He just didn't have it in him after losing all those break points in the first two sets.

Have you ever had a bad day? Ever wake up feeling lethargic for some reason? Why is it so hard for some on this board to consider that pros have bad days too???

Because they're over-invested in their identification with the player they support.

Otherwise there wouldn't be such rabid fanfights.

:-?

Very true. Sometimes in tennis, at most any level, you can't explain why you have an off day. I'm sure it happens to even the very top players like Federer and company. They're human. The guy just came off a huge title win and also won a tough semifinal. He obviously could not muster the energy and precision that is required for the match, though I'm sure he wanted it very badly. They're human beings not machines that are programmed. If they're just a little "off" mentally and/or physically, that's enough to allow a very good opponent to take advantage. It can even happen to the very best tennis players in the world and with tennis, it's such a tough individual sport. You can't call "timeouts" or substitute in another player like you can with basketball or football, sometimes allowing a great player to "get back in a zone". You can't rely on anyone else out there. Great win for Murray. He just played too well and took full advantage of Federer's lapses today.

Too much pressure on himself for probably his last chance ever to win the gold medal in singles?

Not enough sleep the night before due to that pressure?

Still not emotionally nor physically over his tough, long match in the semis vs. Del Potro?

But Nadal never has an off day. Rosol was playing out of his mind. Otherwise, Nadal always finds a way.

He needed to beat Delpo when he got the first break in the final set and a London Olympics has lifted the team GB effect.

The team side of the Olympics is a key ingredient even though tennis is not a team event.

i actually think he was satisfied after beating Del Potro and just getting the career Silver slam.

If Murray would've laid down Federer was going to take it, but i agree with an earlier post that he wasn't willing to pay the price. After the first set got away from him and the break in teh second, i didn't notice the sense of any urgency.

Yes, but this must have been the "baddest" day in Federer's career ever. 7-time Wimbledon champion and probably the best grass court player ever getting smoked on Centre Court at Wimbledon? Who would have thunk it? I'm not sure what the betting odds were going into this match, but anyone who bet that Murray would beat Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 probably turned a $10 bet into a million dollars!

Excellent post; sums it up nicely; I think sometimes we (as fans of tennis) are just too demanding :(

Two reasons:

1) Murray was confident and playing awesome, causing Fed to be unsure of what he does and forced him to errors, returning every serve he can without giving almost any cheap points to Fed.

2) Fed was spent, not only from the DP match, but the whole grass season. Remember, he made finals in Halle, won Wimbly, played a bit of doubles in the Olymipcs and reached the singles final. Now add the DP match and the fact Fed is 31.

I am not disappointed by the loss, I am disappointed by the fact Fed couldn't put up more of a fight and make it less one sided. The match was closer than the score shows though, Fed had lots of BPs on Murray's serve just couldn't convert once.

His biggest mistake was to take on the appearance of the traditional slow zombie, instead of the more modern fast zombie.

Here's what I think.

I think Federer was fully prepared to come out and take Murray to the woodshed once more like in the final a month ago. I'm sure he would have smiled sheepishly again while Murray sobbed for the cameras. However this time he was faced with a Murray who was determined not to let this happen again. That, plus the effect of his draining semi-final match, meant he was caught on the hop this time and got rattled by the aggressive quality of Murray's returning and the quality of his passing shots which were coming off this time unlike in the Wimbledon final. Fed himself mentioned those passing shots in his post-match presser and hinted that they were the reason the outcome of the match wasn't the same as a month ago.

But once he realised he wasn't going to win this one he accepted it philosophically and graciously and seemed to content himself with his silver medal. I think he was genuinely pleased for Murray. I'm sure he felt that he's won so much lately that he can take this one on the chin and just move on!

I could be wrong but here is my take- You implied much more than merely that his performance in the semifinal was strange. You rather adduced a position in whole cloth on his semifinal match as the key plank in your overall joke of an argument, which was that there was no way that he could not be juicing after that performance.

Many posters rebutting your silliness casually pointed out the obvious facts that Roger's game has never been known for being especially taxing on his body to begin with, and that a great deal of the total time that he actually spent on the court was devoted to serving and returning, not on running back and forth like cats chasing a laser across the floor.

The difference is enormous between a match not being "all that tough" or sufficient to wear a particular guy down in light of how it was played stylistically and not simply how long it was played duration wise on the one hand, and on the other, a match both taking so long duration wise that it sets some kind of a record but more importantly, that it cannot but lead to one conclusion in particular which, in the case of your commentary, was that Roger must be juicing and you deny the alternative.

I am happy for Murray but you can flame better than this.:)
