Can ping pong make you better?

    As the question asks does it help with anything like timeing or anything like that. I personally think it helps hand to eye corrdination but what are your thoughts and experiences?

    Imo, any physical activity helps. Ping pong? Definately.

    maybe eye hand coordination, but that's about the extent of it. strokes are completely different, as is the footwork and preparation. maybe it could help you with being focus and having a competitive mindset?

    ok, ok. here's what i find that ping pong helps you in:

    HAND-EYE COORDINATION. no brainer on this one. :p

    REFLEXES. just like what The Steak (must...eat...steak...) says.

    EXERCISE. must keep heartrate up and fat down...

    PLACEMENT:
    yes. ping pong, since it's soo small, forces you to develop a sense of placement. (i.e. where to place the ball, drop shots, etc.....)

    FOCUS. yes, it is quite demanding if you have to return a smash with a tiny paddle. YOU MUST FOCUS.

    SENSE OF DEFENSE/OFFENSE. true much?

    and soo much more... :p

    I played TONS of pingpong before tennis....
    But better, I think volley practice from just inside the service line, both players hitting true hard sliced volleys with as much pace as possible, to maintain some amount of consistency, is better than ping pong for hand eye quickness training.
    Keep score, head high balls lose, if the ball lands short, you get to groundstroke a winner.

    I had a good stint with ping-pong before tennis and I hafta say, it really helped in terms of raw coordination.

    Fred Perry, who won three consecutive Wimbeldon's, learned ping pong (table tennis) and then transferred to tennis. That's why he had an unusual grip. Does that mean it will help your tennis? I don't know, but it might.

    i saw it wrecks you tennis form.
    play ping pong for a day then the next day go and play tennis and youll find yourself hitting everything short

    So True. I play table tennis top 10 in my state, and 4.0 tennis, and after drilling my tt forehand for a few hours, all my tennis forehands are short armed and dumped into the net. For me, the two are detrimental to each other, but I love them both so not going to stop either.

    yep i used to play table tennis a bit but wasnt that good but i did love it. But it kinda wrecks my tennis form a little as well as playing badminton can make u use a bit too much wrist in tennis. i think once in a while is alright.

    I think it depends on the level of ping pong that you play. I am capable of playing afairly high level of ping pong but I choose not to when it's tennis season because it really screws up my tennis game. There are so many differences such as strokes , contact point, paddle angles, speed, and timing to name a few. For me the speed of ping pong is so very much faster that it is more of a reflex. One can go from offense to defense in a blink of and eye. Having said that I think that it could improve your reflex volley though. Perhaps if I was at as good in tennis that I am in ping pong I would have something different to post.:)

    Table tennis screws up your grip and makes your shots wristy with bent elbow when you switch to tennis.

    Ping pong will really help you quicken your hands, so I guess it's good if you want to improve volleys.

    A better tennis player? Absolutely not! They're 2 different sports. That reminds me of those guys who want to improve their jumping by working out their calves all day. If you want to jump higher, then jump. If you want to improve your tennis, play tennis.

    I'm with Rickson....
    If you need to improve your quickness in volleys, practice volleys!
    If you need to improve consistency in groundies, practice groundies.
    Most of us have a basis for sports from an early age. Talking tennis here, we need to practice TENNIS.

    Hand-eye cordination and reflexes improve definetly when playing advanced skill ping-pong. Helps me at the net in competitive dblz. Can have you dripping in sweat in 5-8 minutes. Ping pong dblz is great.

    What about doubles volley practice with a tennis ball and racket?
    That can't be worse than practicing pingpong, can it?

    I got close to 4 million in tetris and it still hasn't helped me with my volleys.

    Only benefits I see is improve dexterity and reaction time. Other than that - don't see it benefiting anything else - you need to be able to run and hit.

    I played a lot of TT when I was a teenager don't see it benefiting me. I had to make a drastic change on forehand - tt involved wrist action.

    Does minigolf get you to the PGA Tour????

    Ping Pong and Tennis are different sports, don't waste your time on a table go outside and practice the real thing.

    lol i love ping pong+badminton too cept i use a tennis form for both when i play them so as to not wreck my tennis form

    ex. pingpong= western grip forehand, badminton=slice backhand and forehand and smashes xD

    There's this brand new idea, though, called Cross Training.

    But seriously, I could see someone improving their half volleys, swinging volleys and quickness with table tennis. I'm not saying this would be the preferred or superior way of making these improvements, but if you were going to be playing TT anyway, there would probably be a benefit for doing so.

    Cross training is extremely important in mma, but that's because a ground specialist or a stand up specialist can no longer hang with the well versed fighters of today. How is someone who specializes in kickboxing learning how to fight on the ground the same thing as someone playing ping pong to improve tennis? The boxer who fights in mma will most certainly have to fight on the ground at some point while a tennis player might never be faced with a paddle and plastic ball.

    I think you are using the term Cross Training in a different way than most. In your example cross training in MMA is training for the various aspects of MIXED MA. Most use Cross Training to do seemingly unrelated activities to help the primary sport because many of the useful skills in the primary sport are more prominent in the secondary sport.

    A better example than a MMA learning groundfighting skills (which as you correctly point out, could be currently argued is an essential part of MMA), would be learning ballet for flexibility or coordination (ballet skills, of course would be otherwise useless in MMA).

    You'll get betta training with Wii Tennis!

    You have more area to move and you'll be able to mimic your stroke with the wand.

    I played for an hour and man I got as high as the pro level but got killed later - when the Wii decided to step their game up.

    actually it does help u. if u play competitive ping pong like do. well i play at school with all the chinese and they are competitive.
    it helps me hit of the rise a lot
