How fast do you think Sampras can hit his fastest serve with that big racquet he using?

I'm sure he can easily hit 130, but it's not his style of serving. he'd need to slow it down a bit because he moves it around the box like crazy. I've never seen anyone use so much of the box like he has.

One motion one toss so many different ways the ball goes. Angles spins, pace. That serve was the ultimate. The tough part about that serve though is basically you just about saw it twice. 1st and 2nd. So wicked I tell ya.

Sampras went from an 85 sq inch racket to a 90 so I'm sure his serve is probably 5-10mph faster.

Strange question. His fastest serve was clocked at 138mph at Wimbledon way back in 1998.

I understand he can regularly serve over 130mph with the new frame. He was regularly serving over 130mph during the 2002 US Open final. But he likes to reduce the pace to get the angles often. Like the greatest fast bolwers in cricket, he's the ultimate server.

Now baseball fans, do pitchers have the same philosophy as great fast bolwers and great servers, ie moving the ball around to fool the opponent, as the ball doesn't hit the deck in baseball how do pitchers do it?

His averagfe serve speed was probably more like mid 120s to high 120s

I don't think he got it above 130 mph as frequently as Roddick or some other players did.

But it was his placement, mix-up, and disguise that really made his serve tough to return.

What's up with the spelling of his name? Was that intentional?

Yes, he can. And >> NO, it isn't because he has a larger frame.

Thats what matters most when serving. Roddicks serve is big but he doesnt have the disguise or placement that sampras has.

    SAMPRAS.....

His opening serve in the 2nd match was 217 Kilometers, which equates to 134/135 miles per hour. If growing Donald Young can hit in the 130's, I can safely say Sampras can also... :)

One of his serves was clocked at 136 mph last year in his exhibition match against Courier. I saw it in person. And that was to the sideline. If he had hit it down the T, it would have been clocked even higher.

That new N-code frame is definitely giving him more power. and that luxilon helps him spin the ball at 6000 rpm

Yes, if you throw a straight fastball, even 100mph down the middle, it is gonna leave the park in a hurry.

Pitchers hit corners, throw different pitches curve, slider, change, in addition to cutting or sinking their fastballs, throwing them not as fast but so that they tail.

Set up pitches with other pitches.

You can be far more strategic in baseball because you get 4 balls and 3 strikes. So you can waste pitches.

Sampras has said that when he went to a larger frame he added more power to his serve and forehand. He also said that he wanted more power to his game and that was a reason why he switched to a 90 from an 85.

Lets keep this in perspective. Sampras is playing exos, and on the senior tour. "His game" as you call it is long gone.

Additionally, Sampras would reach the 130 mark with an 85 strung with 18g gut, and at 72 lbs tension. Oh, and he could also hit it with 5000+ rpm's of spin.

That is not saying he would hit 130 on every serve. But when he wanted, he could reach back and hit that mark.

Oh, and the frame he is hitting with is not much different than the 85.

Sampras hit several serves around 136mph against Federer today, and I would say he was averaging close to 130mph on first serves during the match.

agreed BP :), and to the OP: what kind of question is that? can sampras serve over 130mph?

sampras served over 130mph in his playing days, and i vividly remember him serving over 130mph in 2001/2002 when i think the television cameras focused on the radar guns a little more often...

sampras served low 130s quite often in the 2002 us open final, and in his 2nd match with federer this week his first serve, an ace, was i think 217kph, which is about 135mph

Still the best serve in the world, although Karlovic might argue with that. Definitely the best serve under 6'10", let's just say that. I've never seen clutch serving like with Sampras. When Roddick is down break point, you usually expect him to get broken. With Sampras, you don't even consider that possibility.

Sure he can!!!..... can he?

The only thing that Sampras lost are his speed, agility and athleticism.

Actually, during the exhibition, I remember one of his serves was 212 km/h. I guess it stuck in my head because that's the degrees of boiling water. Anyways, when you convert it to mph it's about 132 mph.

I doubt it was intentional. when I was typing his name the other day, and was typing fast, I had typed the extra s, but caught it. So am sure it's just a typing error.
