I spent the shortest day trapped in a BLIZZARD!!! I barely made it to my 9:00 presentation at a client's in Colorado Springs Wednesday AM ... finished at NOON, only to learn the State Patrol had CLOSED I-25 outside of The Springs and every State Highway or secondary road out of town.

Fortunately, my son lives there so I headed for his house. I got on I-25 to travel one exit (or about 2 miles) through the near-White Out conditions. 200 yards from my intended exit about fifteen cars were stuck in a drift of about two feet of snow across the Interstate. Every stuck car was a two-wheel drive vehicle ... but they were scattered from Guard Rail-to-Guard Rail ... preventing the rest of us from advancing.

(All I could see was about three stuck cars from my position. The blowing and drifing snow made visibility almost impossible.) After 2.5 HOURS (!) I realized that from ME back, we were just waiting "on faith" that something was being done to free the traffic jam ... but we really had no DATA on which to base this "faith".

By this time I'd seen that I was one of the few "neighbors" who was dressed for the occassion. (Learned by observing all of us periodically getting out of our stopped vehicles to clear the rapidly falling snow off our windshields.) So I decided to jog ahead and reconnoiter the scene.... It was only then that I learned the source of the problem was the knuckleheads in the two-wheel drives who were our barrier to progress.

Some of the trapped people were at least prepared with emergency snow shovels in their cars ... but I could see that even though these "neighbors" were banding together to help each other their "progress" was Sysiphian at best. (They'd shovel a car free of the drift ... and drive one whole car length forward ... getting stuck once again.) It would have been comical if it were not so clearly perilous. There they were, fifty yards from the other side of the drift, and the snow was falling faster than they could dig it out....

I realized that many of us could probably negotiate a wide left-to-right pattern through the drift and around the stuck cars to the exit. Jogging *back* to where my car was (Whew! In that direction my back was to the wind at least!) I stopped at every 4WD driver's window and pointed-out the path of egress, reminding them to maintain steady progress to power through the drift. By the time I'd reach my own car, I was following a path created by about six other 4WDs.

(Murphy's Law) The guy in the Rodeo in front of me got stuck(!). I tried to squeeze past him on the Left and maintain my momentum. The Inside Median Guard Rail was only about two feet from my driver's door .. and *I* got momentarily stuck in the same drift the Rodeo was in. "Rodeo" sort of "lost it" with frustration and was flooring his gas ... spinning and fish-tailing back and forth. I jumped out and asked him to wait for me to clear the drift ... then he could follow me. out (I was afraid he was gonna bash my car in his aggitation....) I backed-and-gunned forward about four times and managed to "plow" my Subaru Forrester through and reconnect to the "trail" created by my predecessors.

You would think 3.5 hours to travel 2 miles would be the *worst* part of the trip ... and you'd be wrong. I made the Exit, but still neede to travel about four miles to reach my son's house. In the gloomy twilight ... in a blizzard ... visibility was sometimes suddenly ZERO. I was just hoping to stay on the road until I could see again. (And I couldn't just stop; there were cars behind me and I was as afraid they'd plow into me as I was that I'd plow into the guy in front of me...!) This part of my journey was truly terrifying. I didn't want to be in an ACCIDENT in those conditions...!

I reached my son's warm dry house one hour after clearing the jam on the highway ... and we hunkered down for the night. I was #6 in line yesterday NOON for the State Patrol to open the gate and let me leave town. They *did* open the gate ... at 4:30 PM. I headed into the foothills and made it home at 6:00. The Road Crews had done a super job clearing the snow and the drive -- while still slippery -- was drift-free. There were places where I could see the most ... surreal ... landscape with the waves of snow drifts fading into the distant fields....

Reaching home was "other worldly." Most of my neighbors had spent the previous two days digging out. Their houses look like FORTRESSES with walls of snow approaching seven feet all around. We got three feet ... with drifts to about five.

Well ... that's my story of "How I Spent The Solstice." Time to go get some exercise and shovel my own fortress.... Bye!

CC, I'm not a coffee drinker, so please start a big pot of Hot Chocolate for me on my breaks from shoveling. Thanks!

    - KK

KK, glad you finally stopped in. Sorry to hear about the blizzard - given where I live I usually giggle when others receive a blizzard, but yours was particularly nasty!! There will definately be a pot of hot chocolate ready for you! :)

Wow Rabbit, you really want to get hurt don't you? ;)

KK, I cannot imagine what you went through. I've been in snow about 12 times in my life, and I've never driven in it or been caught in it. I would have been absolutely lost in that situation (but my father in law would love your story considering that you drive a SubFor, he has one too and is always showing me how Consumer Reports likes it better than my CRV).

So, I need to spill a little bit. I got an email from Justin, which turned into a phone call from Justin. He had a doctor's appointment today and he will not be back on tour in March as we had hoped. I got a bit choked up during our call, which made him get a bit choked up too. That was a bit rough, but he did promise to keep our date to hit together on March 10th, so I guess I'll fly down to So Cal to visit him anyway, even if I don't actually go to IW to see some tennis. I just hope he has a big basket of tennis balls so that he doesn't have to chase my errant shots all over the court, that could hurt him all over again!

    I need egg nog!!!!!!!!

    Excellent...

(To be honest, I am going out of town tomorrow for a few days, so I had to finish the egg nog in the refridgerator. It was almost a full pint, then I added the correct proportion of rum/brandy. I think I'm getting a bit tipsy...)

Hurt? Oooh. I used to have to pay for treatment like that.

For your benefit, I can only add that we had a cold front come through yesterday. Today, it's damned cold out there. We're on our way to a chilly high of 60 degrees today. But there is some good news, it will warm. Next Wednesday, I have a lesson scheduled. It's supposed to be around 60 then as well. Oh well, I'll have to bundle up. :)

    Happy Holidays to all.!!!

Sounds great ilovecarlos!! I will leave the establishment in your capable hands until I return. I need to make some apps and then head out for a party tonight, same thing tomorrow - not too sure how much time I'll be able to spend in the bar the next few days.
If Fee stops in, remember a dollop of ice cream in her egg nog, and Drak always has his Carsbergs. I think it'll be fairly slow the next few days, but thanks for taking the helm. Later all!!! :)

Yes, SF, Santa has been here and I have my gifts under the tree along with a full stocking. I have to finish my Amaretto now and get some sleep before the phone starts ringing tomorrow morning with my family yelling at me to get my lazy butt outta bed and get over to my mom's house for coffee and breakfast.
I make a big point of waiting to be together to open the gifts - I don't care about the out-of-towners, but since we're in the same city, we may as well be together as we do this ritual.
I was DD for a party last night (always try to help out a bit when I can), so now is my quiet time to sip Amaretto and chill. Hmm.. I do want to say MC to all on this board and especially my patrons. It has been cool on this forum and I appreciate everyone!! Drak, pics or no pics, you know you are the sexiest yoda I have ever seen. Fee..what can I say? You're so awesome! Sobad, you make me laugh! Phil...you have been lost to me for a week now. Did Deuce scare you away from me with his odd comments? Don't listen to him my dragon-slayer, you are numero uno. Dedans, you are a literary genius - so much so that I often read your posts twice to receive the full effect. Jay, what can I say? You are an elusive, reclusive master of words. To all the girls - you rock!! Love the pics, and the fact that you take the time to step in for a drink and some convo - SF, CS, and ilovecarlos especially. Why did I start naming off people like I'm reading an oscar speech? How annoying is this crap - and of course I'll forget someone important. LOL.
SS, Plunger, Mahboob and Mohmoh - you have all given me so much to think about. I would like to give a shout out to KK and DD, and the TW staff, who I'm sure browse these posts occasionally. :) Frodo - I hope all works out well for you and you find a way to see your sweet angel Sanguinetti in '07. Now my cat is yowling at me for the treats he gets at bedtime so goodnight all - and if I forgot anyone, it's just cause I'm on my third Amaretto and I enjoy everyone on this forum.
May everyone here and all their loved ones prosper in the new year and remember - please do not drive after drinking. It just ain't worth it!! :)

BTW... I've been on holidays from work for most of the last month and a half and I go back on Boxing Day. I won't be posting as much as my shifts are twelve hours in length and it zaps the energy outta me, but I'll still be around as much as I can. Please take care of this fine establishment and remember to check the washrooms at the end of the night - Drak has been known to be in there for two days at a time!! Mhuahaahaaaaaaaa..........

Rain is good, just don't rain during the Aussie open time in few weeks. and i will be disappointed once again since the courts are still green set, i want to see safin hit those big shots but cannot see the ball since it just blends into the green set courts on TV screen.

Never heard and Aussie use the expression, "big time". That just struck me as so American. Maybe it is Aussie or English and we all share it. Or maybe it is like, "no worries", which people in the US and Canada say all the time now. That one got a boost from the LION KING...big time.

Bartender, make it two maratburgers, now that my man Sagittar is here. Where is the centre of the world, by the way? And what did you think of the recent renovations in the men's room?
