I might be alone in my opinion but I can't stand Mary Carillo. She is so annoying with her commentary. I hate that she is the major spokeswomen for tennis on television.

And what exactly don't you like about her? Is it the fact that she actually has a mind and an opinion?

i like her, i like brad too - why? they speak their minds and dont give a **** on what people thinks.
same with Johnny Mac too, he speaks his mind at the majors, does anyone complain..well they dont do it loud enough ;)

i dont mind the rest of the ESPN team, but...BUT..when Dick Enberg does it, i hate it, he ALWAYS makes a compaision to football one way or another. his classic phrase, " In football terms....blah blah blah".
so stick to football and collage basketball..leave tennis alone. And why did ESPN hire him for the Aus Open? hes not working for them?

I like Carillo cause she's honest and knows a lot about the game, Mary-joe-helen-fernandez-gonzales-ruana-pascual comes off a bit condascending. Enberg is just awful. I guess my ideal booth team would be Johnny Mac and Mary Carillo, don't know who would do play by play, I guess Cliff would be okay, and Brad Gilbert courtside.

 it's the voice, man.... if I only heard it, I honestly would think she's a man. Her commentary is alright, but at times it almost seems as if she repeats herself (or maybe I should say, has the same thing to say). But I'm telling you that voice.......

i donno man, carillo has that annoying laugh, and shes like captain obvious out there. whereas brad gilbert gives you a coach's perspective, johnny mac or patrick mac have good player's perspectives, and drysdale give you a good (if not ad nauseam) comparison with the old days (particularly "kenny" rosewall i've noticed) but its a good balance. carillo never really seems to make insightful comments. like in sharapova's match today "her forehand isn't as sound mechanically as her backhand" i mean guys in our tennis boards have been saying this for years. i would've have liked more of a "here's why" you know demonstrate, but shes been outta the game for so long, and i mean the women's tour then and now is absolutely incomparable. i mean pmac still works with davis cup, and jonny mac can still win title on teh atp tour apparently, these guys are more in touch with tennis today. i agree mary joe fernandez isn't a good commentator either, but i figure they need a token former female so i take fernandez, cuz she can speak to the players in spanish. personally if i were to have an announcer i'd say tracy austin did a better job than these two in the usopen converage. how about having like capriati up there, lord knows itll be a while before she can take to the court again.

I like Tracy Austin. Drysdale is unbearable, Carillo sometimes comes off as insane (got really pissed off with Brad Gilbert when he suggest coaching during matches), Brad Gilbert is good - he gives the coach's perspective and usually has a pretty good eye for things, Mary Joe Fernandez is nothing special, Patrick McEnroe is okay; he knows what he's talking about, but he's devoid of a personality and says the same things about Federer over and over. The best is John McEnroe, just because it's so awesome that you can watch a match play-by-play with him. And Dick Enberg always leaves a nice touch at the end of each Slam.

Sometimes she can be a little over zealous in her opinions ( her hawk eye rant during miami) but for the most part i enjoy her commentary. She's straightforward and doesn't hold back, no matter who/what she's discussing. As far as female commentator's go give me her over Fernandez *gag* that heifer talks non-stop about sharapova as she were her secret lovechild

Give me a break! the woman is incredibly repetitive, if you're a regular tennis viewer her stories get old and boring very fast.

I thought Mary Carillo was good during today's match on CBS. However, during the week on ESPN2 I thought she was annoying with her constant whining about the challenge system. I wonder if CBS told her to cool it.

I completely agree with the original poster. Mary Carillo is repetitive, boring, and not nearly as knowledgable as she thinks she is.

Her rant about the new Hawk Eye Challenge system was insane. The players like the system, the fans at the stadium like the system, and us viewers at home like the system. It seems like she is the only one that dislikes the system, and her major argument appears to be relating to how often the linespeople are correct. True, the linespeople are correct more often than not. However, if they are wrong on big points, it could affect the entire match, as we have all seen countless times in the past. It takes far less time to challenge and get the results, then it does for a player to be outraged and argue with the umpire.

Aside from that issue, Mary constantly points out the obvious, and to me, she is behind the times in every category. She has little knowledge about what actually occurs in the locker room, unlike a guy like Brad Gilbert or John McEnroe, who actually visit with the players.

Just the other day, she went on a rant about how there has never been a grand slam champion, or number one player, either man or woman who wasn't a good mover on the court. Brad Gilbert quickly pointed out that Lindsay Davenport was definitely not fleet of foot. Instead of just agreeing with Brad, she stumbled away trying to defend her position. Finally, realizing she wasn't making any sense, she agreed with Brad and said, well Lindsay was the exception.

Personally, I can't stand listening to her anymore. She talks during the points and she is extremely annoying. I will take Mary Joe Fernandez any day of the week, especially on Sunday, over Mary Carillo.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. God forbid that there be advancements in the game of tennis. It doesn't even take more than 5 seconds to have the play challenged and looked at on the big screen, as far as I know it doesn't affect the flow of the game. Certainly not as much as some guys who get on a tirade about a missed call. Carillo does get repetitive and its funny how she really does state the obvious when I'm watching the matches on TV. What's with these ESPN commentators talking during points in matches? Man, they should all have a get together on the Tennis Channel for half an hour and just blow off some steam. It's like they have so much to say so they let it all out during rallies. Someone has to put a muzzle on them so we can watch the tennis and hear the sound of the ball being hit. So yes, I am all for Hawk-Eye/Shot-Spot and I have been a fan of the sport since I was 10, i'm 28 now.

I agree with her about the challenge system 1000% but I cannot stand her. Her voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard, her comments are worthless, boring and repetitive and shes always trying too hard to sound intelligent.

I nominate her for the STFU award for 06.

BTW Ballmachine, I heard her get owned by Gilbert also, it was hilarious. She had no comeback at all, just stammered for a while like an idiot and dropped the subject.

Yeah, but "Cliffie" half the time doesn't even know the score and Brad Gilbert's predictions are laughable; he's usually wrong.

There are people watching tennis for the first time that don't even know who the players are. There are people that don't know what inside-out forehands are and others who don't know what a break point is.

Having a wide range of personalities and people willing to talk about (or having) different levels of the game is what we need and it is what we've got. They not only have to appeal to the crazy tennis fans (like us), but they also have to appeal to a football fan watching a tennis came for the first time.

Sometimes the "outside" announcers, coming from the football backgrounds and such, may not appeal to us tennis forum members. What they appeal to is the general public and sometimes they really do make the game interesting, often adding to the sense of occasion. It's what we need and it's what the sport needs.

I have noticed that the way Carillo acts is dependent on who is up there with her. I think her and drysdale make a decent combination. I especially like Brad and even Patrick. I guess I don't understand what the big deal is.

We are extremely lucky we get to see as much as we do. When people complain about other events going into our tennis time, does anyone realize tennis matches commonly cut into other events? Ok, that's off topic.

I saw a short tennis mtach online with no sound. You quit taking bad announcers for granted after that. I doubt there is anyone on this board that doesn't understand the importance of the comentating. I don't think there are many other good options out there. It could be worse.
