This is not too surprising considering how high Pete strings his racquets.

Borg strung at 80ilbs & his racquet completely shattered on returns several times.

I remember Sampras' racquet broke when he played Henman at Wimbledon one year as well(he threw it into the crowd)

I heard about how many racquets Borg used to break. I think Monica Seles used to string her racquet somewhere in the 80 lbs range too.

Edit: I just checked a website and it says that she used to string at 90 lbs. Is that even possible? I thought maybe the racquet would crumple like a sheet of paper.

I remember it too. It could be called a gentle throw or a toss, either is acceptable. I remember a fat lady was quite happy when she caught it.

Two of my favorite players.....I recall seeing both those matches on the tele. The one where Pete's racket breaks is probably a frame with a hairline crack that finally imploded. That may be before Pete had his personal stringer travelling with him. Pete used to break strings all the time during points before that. I believe during that same match (Compaq Cup/Germany) Pete won 20 some odd points in a row on his serve.

The Rafter frame looks like three of the center mains below the bottom cross blew out. Seems like the last cross is relatively high on the frame too. I think that was the match Rafter won when the chair ump overruled an out call on an ad side Rafter kicker on match point. Pete was pissssssed! F this F that, etc. The only time I ever saw him get really mad. The replay showed it was the right call though. On the line.

I truly miss watching those guys play along with Edberg, Becker, et al. Serve and volleyers are like dinosaurs now.

Edit: The Compaq Cup match where Pete won 20 some points in a row on his serve was Sept 1997......the Cincy match with the match point overrule call was August, 1998.
