    Finished 64 and would have easily got into the indoor national tournament. But for some reason we are not in the field. Disappointing. It would have been nice to go to a location and at least attempt to qualify.

    That's odd. What's going on with the Clemson program right now? Do they need a change in the coaching position?

    One more year for McCuen. I think a change for this year would hurt next year. There is a lot of potential next year, with everyone returning save Moran who was a doubles player and we are adding Ansari and maybe one more. After next year there should be a change, unless the team does amazingly well.

    He's playing the closed. Although he's a junior at South Carolina I heard he started college as a 16 yr. old. Maybe the big picture for him is one more run at Kalamzoo. Which is fine. That said I still feel like a player of his caliber should be playing Futures and high level Opens.

    Would he be the clear cut favorite to win the closed? If not, I don't see the big deal with him competing at a level where others can still beat him.

    Yea, if you're an 18 year old college junior playing top 4 singles on a top 75 ranked SEC tennis team, why push yourself in the summer? Other things are more important then improving your tennis game over the summer. Like playing in a Closed tournament and cake walking through your first 3-5 matches (depending on your ranking). Hey, at least he's playing tennis in the summer. Some college tennis players don't even play over the summer.

    Well, the first 3-5 matches are usually cakewalks for the top 8 seeds anyway...looks like he went out in the quarters last year and then semis of consolations. If he had won it last year, I think he'd be wasting his time. But since he didn't...and since I'm sure there are some players in the draw who will either push him or are capable of beating him, I don't see a problem with him playing in it.

    It's cool he's playing. He's fun to watch. Funny thing about Southern's is there's no clear cut favorite to win the closed. Lots of top players though.

    Clemson Tiger:

    I see there's a number of tennis resorts and academies on the South Carolina coast. That being the case, I would think that USC and Clemson would be able to pull some of the top juniors who train at these places. Is that not the case?

    Any word on Connor Clements? Ranked #21 by Tennis Recruiting Network. I've read that he's down to two choices; South Carolina and Illinois. #1 South Carolina guy so maybe you guys know more about what's going on with him.

    Conner is going to a NAIA school for his first year, doesn't have the grades from what I heard. Should go to South Carolina after that.

    There are a lot of juniors from that area. But as of yet I have not seen that many that are major confernce quality come out of that area. Wes Moran is one who went to Clemson. Of course Harrison Richmond is another. Recently Clemson has done a better job of locking down the state talent that South Carolina. The Gamecocks will not get anyone of of the upstate which has recently produced Rigsby,Harrington and Hilsman. But the lowstate is a battle between the two schools.

    I think the academies down on the coast should be producing more players actually.

    Wait, so Clemson is upgrading its tennis facility? I've seen the addition of the balcony/watching area.

    What are the details of the future additions/changes?

    The plan is to completely redo the center and add better locker rooms. Also their is a plan to add an indoor facility that would have 6 courts and be a big improvement over the current one.

    i wonder how the indoor courts will play. I always found the current ones to be slower and higher bouncing than the outdoor courts. Also, they ate up the felt on any balls I used.

    Looks like he is in the semi-finals of the Southern Closed. Would NAIA even be a challenge for this level of player? (And yes, I understand that he may have no other choice if the grades are the issue)

    It can be, If he plays #1 for a good NAIA school there are players that can challemge and beat him. Usually its players who come from countries where tennis is relatively unknown. Like Benin where Loic Didavi comes from (solid player for Xavier of Louisiana).

    I am a little disappointed to not see any Clemson names in any of the ITA summer circuit draws or in any futures. I saw the Maden bros in one German event and they are playing Bundesliga right now. Other than that I don't know what's going on. I thought Harrington would have wanted to play some summer events. Ansari isn't in Kalamazoo, which is very disappointing. Who knows what's going on.

    Thats a pretty indeterminate statement. Somewhere between 0% and 100%

    5 Tigers in action today in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens.

    (5-8)Yannick Maden vs Daniel Sotomarino of North Florida
    Hunter Harrington vs Jordan Angus of Mississippi State
    Gerardo Meza gets a tough draw vs Hernus Pieters
    Battle of newcomers, Austin Ansari vs Marco Nunez of UGA
    Dom Maden vs Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss

    Maden bros(1st time playing together in College) vs William Kallberg, Stefan Lindmark of Ole Miss
    The highly unusual combo of Meza and Wibowo vs James Chaudry (4), MSU
    Malte Stropp (4), MSU

    Yannick Maden won 6-2 6-1.

    Harrington dropped a heart breaker to Angus in a 3rd set breaker. Dropping heart breakers was a habit of Harrington's last year and unfortunately begins 2012 with one. Missed an opportunity to play Van Overbeek.

    Disappointing showing from the Tigers. Dom Maden put up a fairly good fight vs Lutjen and Meza did ok against Pieters. Neither could win that 1st set breaker.

    Ansari's result is the most discouraging. Yes it was his first collegiate match but it was also the first for Nunez his opponent. The scoreline does not flatter Ansari.

    Wibowo has won 3 matches in the D2 bracket, which I don't know why the hell he is in bracket. I mean he did play #3 for us last year, better player than many in the d1 bracket.

    The Maden brothers beat the Ole Miss team 8-3 in doubles. I don't know, I think they have the makings of a serious team this year. Secret weapon finally unveiled.

    well the weekend actually ended up being not so bad for Clemson.

    Yannick Maden:
    def Sotomarino(UNF) 6-2 6-1
    lost to Bjerrehus(VT) 6-1 4-6 7-5.

    doubles w/ D.Maden.
    def Kallberg/Lindmark (Ole Miss) 8-3
    def Brasseaux/Diaz (UGA) 9-8(2)
    def Austin/Lipman (Vandy) WO
    def Pasha/Wagland (UGA) 8-4
    lost to Alford/Diep 8-5

    At first I was distraught over the loss to Bjerrehus but the Freshman Dane showed this week that he can play by beating Van Overbeek in straights. So the 3 set close one isn't so bad.

    He and brother Dom played well in doubles. I like this team.

    Gerardo Meza
    lost to Pieters (UGA) 7-6(4) 6-4
    def Bao (FGC) 7-6(3) 6-3
    vs Antun (VT) ?

    doubles w/ Wibowo
    lost to Chaundry/Stropp (Miss State) 8-5

    Not a terrible loss to Pieters considering Pieters had a great week until the finals. Rebounded with a consolation win.

    Has never been a great doubles player so not a surprise.

    Dom Maden
    lost to Lutjen (Ole Miss) 7-6 6-3
    lost to Offerdahl (Vandy) 6-2 6-1

    Pretty good showing vs Lutjen who would go on to win the event. It was Lutjen's closest match of the tournament outside of the war with Pasha, rolled in all other matches. But Maden followed that up with a lopsided loss to Offerdahl. I don't know what happened there, bad match up or Dom was tired or what.

    Did great in doubles with brother Yannick.

    Hunter Harrington
    lost to Angus (Miss State) 6-4 3-6 7-6(5)
    def Abdukhalikov (Tenn Tech)
    def Mills (PC) 5-7 6-3 10-7

    Really tough loss vs Angus. Would have liked to have seen him face of with BVO. But rebounded well with a whipping of the Kazakh from Tenn Tech, a guy who can play good tennis. And a nice close win over Mills who beat Hirooka of UK. Good to see him get a close win.

    Austin Ansari
    lost to Nunez (UGA) 6-4 6-3
    def Johnson 6-4 6-4
    def Strecker (Lipscomb) 3-6 6-3 10-6

    First collegiate action for the talented freshman from Greensboro. Slightly disappointing loss to Nunez to start it off, but responded well and beat Johnson in a routine manner. Johnson gave Alford a tough match. Then a close win over Strecker who took Backstrom to 7-5 in the 3rd.

    Ayrton Wibowo (d2 bracket)
    def Andersson (Ga.College) 6-1 7-6
    def Sharma (GT) 6-4 6-0
    def Davisson (UNF) 6-2 7-6(6)
    lost to Gomez (VT) 6-7(4) 6-2 6-1

    not sure why Wibowo was in the D2 bracket, while Harrington and D maden played in d1, considering Wibowo had a ranked win last year, over Hess-Olesen of UNC. Had some routine wins over lesser players and a disappointing fade in sets 2 and 3 to Hokie Freshman Gomez.

    Draws for the Tigers in the pre-qualies:

    Tough draw for Ansari getting Harrison Adams in the 1st round

    Wibowo also gets a tough draw vs Formentera in the first round

    Harrington has an easy first round match but is in same section as Harrison Richmond.

    DoM Maden has the best draw. Has no big obstacles in his way except maybe an improved Cotrone. D Maden could reach the qualies.
