Ok things looking a bit better now. Rigsby and Ansari in control and Yannick has got back into his set. Also Wibowo leading, he got the nod over D Maden in singles today. Meza and Harrington with terrible first sets. Gonzalez and Flores are two good players but I still expect at least one of them to switch the momentum in the 2nd set.

The Canes have been fighting hard but it doesn't seem like they have enough to beat Clemson this year.

Ansari and Rigsby lost the edge. Have given the Canes a real chance here. Please don't let this cone down to Wibowo.

Well, it'll be who can win best of 3 3rd sets on courts 4-6. We shouldn't be in this position.

Wibowo already down 0-3 in 3rd. I expected the meltdown but I thought it would take a bit longer than that.

Rigsby gets it done! 7-6. I'd love to know what the tiebreak score was and how the last few games were.

Hopefully we can ride this momentum to Tallahassee.

    FSU tomorrow.

This should be a good one. Both teams are coming off of less than impressive performances vs some of the ACC bottom teams.

Doubles will be a tight affair. Cotrone/Davis team is on fire they should take 3. I expect the Madens to win at 1. Which means doubles will come down to 2. Hopefully Clemson elects to play Wibowo at 2 doubles with Rigsby.

    singles:

    1. Yannick Maden vs Dominic Cotrone
Maden has been on fire recently. I think Maden should be able to beat Cotrone. Cotrone is a heavy baseline hitter which has given Yannick issues in the past (prime example, Luka Somen last year). I don't think Cotrone has enough game though.

    2. Gerardo Meza vs Benjamin Lock
Lock is the favorite here. Hopefully Meza can play better than he did vs Miami. Im not sure how much Meza can bother Lock, as Lock has the control advantage.

    3. Hunter Harrington vs Jordan Kelly-Houston
I do not like Harrington's chances here. JKH cab exploit Harrington's movement deficiencies by coming to net and keeping Harrington back-pedaling.

4: Dom Maden vs Blake Davis
In 2011 Dom beat Davis 6-2 6-2. Davis is FSU's weakest top 6 player but Dom isnt 100% back yet in singles. Could be Wibowo here but I would play Dom Maden.

    5. Zac Rigsby vs Anderson Reed
I don't expect Reed to bother Rigsby. Rigsby is too solid and can out maneuver the little man .

    6. Austin Ansari vs Michael Rinaldi
Interesting matchup. Both Freshman are playing very well this season.

I don't like the Ansari/Rigsby team. Ansari gets down on himself too quick in doubles for some reason while he dosent in singles.

Harrington dumped about 20 returns into the net. Arg poor play.

Gotta turn up the intensity for singles.

Cotrone just went over and threatened Dom Maden who is sitting as a bench coach for this match. Many chippy calls from both players. Things may get uglier.

    Clemson 4, Florida State 3

Doubles was in full control for the Seminoles the whole time. They have strong 2 and 3 teams. The Madens were playing well but gave a break back right before play was suspended at 5-4 to Clemson. Clemson never made a run at 2 or 3.

    Singles:

    1: 41 Yannick Maden def 110 Dominic Cotrone 6-4 6-3
This was a very unpleasant affair. It started early with Cotrone hooking Maden on two serves in the first game. The ref over-ruled neither. Maden hooked back on a groundstroke the next game and was over-ruled. There were several hooks throughout the match from both players. Cotrone threatened Dom Maden(who was sitting out singles and standing as a bench coach) with "I'll drop you like a mother****er". Cotrone is a heavy baseline hitter, but his lack of discipline holds him back and Maden was able to exploit that. It was a tougher match than the score would indicate. Here is the match point.

    2: Hunter Harrington def Jordan Kelly-Houston 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4
This ended up being the clinching match. JKH started terribly giving Harrington 8 straight points to start. But Harrington gave him 4 straight games after that. The 2nd set tiebreak was vital. Harrington took a 2-0 lead but Kelly-Houston won straight points to lead 4-2. But after that it was all Harrington as he played smartly and overpowered the Nole. For some reason JKH was very panicky in the 3rd set which was odd for someone who had just clinched vs Oklahoma. His coach urged him to calm down but he never did. Harrington served for match at 5-2 but was broken, but did not allow for any more drama by serving out the match at love at 5-4. Here is the clinching point, Kelly-Houston didn't like it too much.

3: Benjamin Lock def Gerardo Meza 6-4 6-2
Meza was really struggling with his backhand as Lock was staying glued to the baseline and forcing Meza to have to react quick. Meza likes time so Lock had a good gameplan. **Lock would later get into a verbal and almost physical altercation with a Clemson fan while watching court 5**

4: Blake Davis def Ayrton Wibowo 6-4 6-4
This was a very long match for a two set 4 and 4 result. Blake Davis was cramping terribly at the end and could barely walk. He served underhanded at 5-4 in the 2nd. Wibowo did not play it smartly at all. Davis followed up two of his underhand serves by cracking first ball backhand winners. He limped to the net like he was emerging from the sahara desert alive and a massive hero.

    5: Austin Ansari def Anderson Reed 3-6 6-1 6-1
Ansari was switched to 5 this match because this was seen as a better matchup. I wasn;t watching this match much because it was way down there but after the first set Reed just looked lost. I looked over several times and saw him shaking his heed, hat in hand and looking at his racket. I also saw Ansari pull off several impressive drop volleys on good net closes. Ansari is getting better and better at that, it's a very good weapon.

    6: Zac Rigsby def Michael Rinaldi 3-6 6-1 6-2
Like Ansari, Rigsby blew away his opponent after the first set. Even though courts 5 and 6 were on opposite ends it's almost as if they were feeding off each others momentum and never let the opponent back into the match at all. FSU players who were finished or bench players tried hard to get Rinaldi pumped up but he wasn't feeling it. He got one break back to make it 2-4 in the 3rd and he got pumped but after that it was like, ehh maybe I don't wanna come back as he meekly gave the next two games to Rigsby trying several ill advised drop-shots. Like in the match point

This is a big big win. It wasn't looking good after doubles and after the first sets on all courts, But something this team never would have done last year is dig very deep and win. This years team did.

This is probably the most controversial call of the match at #1 or at least the one that Cotrone reacted to the most.

    NC State 4, Clemson 2

Another example of not doing well when we are the hunted team. Lost to South Carolina and NC State while being hunted and barely beat Miami. The Florida State state win was still a case of being the hunter because it was at FSU and FSU was coming off of a big win.

NC State came into this one with intensity. NC State has one of the more boisterous and obnoxious teams as far as yelling during the matches. NC State has solid doubles and they took it to Clemson on all 3 courts as even the Maden bros were down when their match was abandoned. Rigsby/Ansari blew a 4-1 lead in their match.

    Singles:

    1: 41 Yannick Maden def Thomas Weigel 6-4 3-6 6-2
Weigel is a clever player and you can see what he is trying to do on his points and its often smart. However his execution isn't always there and he will miss shots by a large margin indicating that he may be planning to much and not reacting enough. Maden had a 2nd set lapse, lost his concentration a bit but got it together in the 3rd. Nobody was really watching the 3rd set here as attentions were elsewhere.

    2: Hunter Harrington def Robbie Mudge 6-3 2-6 6-4
There isn't a whole lot to Mudge's game except bark. He will make you think he is better than he is. Good win for Harrington as he lost to Mudge 6-3 6-4 last year.

    3: Austin Powell def Gerardo Meza 6-4 3-6 6-2
The clincher. This one flew under the radar because there weren't many fireworks going on compared to the craziness at 6 and 5.. Meza played a poor 3rd set after playing a good 2nd set. Disappointing loss for Meza.

4: Dave Thompson def Dom Maden 6-3 6-3
I conceded this one before the match started. It would be great to have Dom fully healthy again. Wibowo would have lost this as well so might as well play Maden to get him back into form.

    5: Sean Weber tied with Austin Ansari 4-6 6-1 6-6 (0-0) unf.
This match got out on control in the 3rd set. Weber had about 5 match points but could not give Ansari his first loss of the season. There were many points were Weber went to net and he either put things away at the net or Ansari passed him. Both players came up with moments of brilliance at times and also moments of implosion at times. Ansari had several wild passing shots to stave off match points and Weber had many crazy volleys to keep himself ahead. This was where all the action was in the crowd as well. The NC State team was right behind the court and were causing a raucous. At one point Ansari won a bog point and gestured for them to quiet down and Beck Bond (finished with his match at this point) lead his Pack in very loudly shushing after every point after that. Weber was also overruled twice in one game which lead to several jeers from Clemson fans and players. Beck Bond physically threatened a Clemson student "Keep looking at me my man and see what happens". The official had to tell NC State players and Clemson fans to stop talking during points. Dave Thompson got into it verbally with a Clemson fan about line calls after Weber was over-ruled. Basically things were way off the rails. The match was ended after Powell clinched on court 3 right before the tiebreak started.

6: Beck Bond def Zac Rigsby 6-4 7-6(4)
I wasn't down at 6 for this match but I heard a lot of yelling from both players and the crowd particularly in one controversial moment of a line call where Rigsby screamed "The ball was easily on the line!" Rigsby lead 3-0 in the 2nd set but gave a break back to Bond after that. Bond is a solid #6 player, I would have preferred to see Ansari face him. I also think Rigsby would have done better vs Weber. Ansari's weakness is his serve and Weber was able to attack the serve and get into net where he excels. Rigsby is a strong server and would have kept Weber back where he is more uncomfortable.

Overall a bad loss. We won't drop terribly far but it's a bad loss for ACC positioning in particular.

Team fell to 21. About what was expected.

Yannick Maden up to #26. New career high for him, his best wins are over Fred Saba,Andreas Mies and Rafael Aita.

    Maden bros doubles at #17.

I actually though Hunter Harrington would get into the singles rankings. Wins over Top 80 Botha and Cochrane and not too many losses.

    The burden is lifted

Maybe now since you guys are out of the top 20, that will take the target off your backs. Maybe you can sneak up on a team or two!

Try from 15 to 21. It's not humor, it's fact. People don't look at you the same if you are not in the top 20.

    agreed.

The number means nothing on court.

If the other guys is having a bad day & you are having a good one , it's time to take him!

The numbers only protect you for seeding purposes in a tournament draw, not in a college or match itself.

    Duke tomorrow.

Weather makes it 50/50 outdoor or indoor.

I hope to get a good amount of video. Want to get some #1doubles action between Maden bros and the #1 ranked doubles team in the land. Also get some Maden vs Cunha singles. Also Ansari vs Hemmeler, that will be an interesting one. And video of interesting stuff at the other courts.

Last year we were not overwhelmed by Duke at any position except for Hemmeler over Harrington which was just a case of awful matchup. We have got to keep it close early. Cannot let Duke get leads. Keep it tight get the crowd involved(which I've made significant efforts to get people out to the match today) and let Duke know this isn't a tennis match it's a dogfight. That is when Duke becomes vulnerable.

They do manage to post a couple head scratcher losses every year I'll give you that

Like Illinois and cal this year

But For the most part they put up great results, and not many teams have beaten USC and ucla a cumulative three or more times past 3 years or regularly won two matches at indoors, so I can't complain too much, even if I vent on this board when they let a match slip they should win now and then

We'll see what happens if they don't get the 8/9 seed draw of hell this year again in NCAAs, they may go all out to send their leader out on a good note

Duke played good. I was hoping we could make them sweat but we never did. There were a few moments of resistance from Clemson but Duke stepped it up in those moments. I have some videos I will post later

Feels bad now but gotta remember this team also routed Wake and FSU who are two solid teams.

Not sure where Clemson could've gotten a point. I know they had some close sets but Duke is better at every spot in my opinion. Clemson is definitely a solid team but they don't matchup very well with Duke

I agree it's a bad matchup. Clemson's strength is at 1,5 and 6. Duke's strength is also at 1,5 and 6. Honestly we give Virginia a better match each year than we give Duke.

The Maden brothers were overwhelmed by Cunha and Hemmeler's angles and precision. Neither Maden played their best however, especially Dom who missed many backhands and returns. I was hoping for a better match at 1 doubles but the Madens were not on their game.

Wibowo and Rigsby played together for the first time with mixed results. There seemed to be moments of mis communication, that will take time to fix.

Harrington and Meza pounded Saba and McCall at 3. Both were volleying better than I have ever seen them volley before. Strong performance from them down at 3.

    Singles:

    1: 5 Henrique Cunha def 26 Yannick Maden 6-4 6-3
These two play a similar style. Not a lot of power, more focus on angles and getting the other player uncomfortable. Cunha can take the ball earlier though and that's what separates him. Here is some action from late in the 1st set. Maden led 3-2 in the 2nd but then dropped 4 straight games. The ref made a terrible overrule at game point at 3-4 in the 2nd. Overruled Maden on a ball on the far side of the chair which was clearly out. Would have been deuce on Cunha's serve instead it game Cunha and 5-3. This was a good match overall, none of the chippy calls and attitude that was present when these two played last year(which ended by the exact same score).

    2: 25 Fred Saba def Hunter Harrington 6-4 6-3
Harrington played great in the first few games. He was on point with his forehand, was moving Saba around and even throwing in a few sharp serve and volley maneuvers finished by a well stuck volley. But at 4-5 with Harrington serving Saba upped his level and got the break and the set. In the 2nd set Saba lulled Harrington into playing more of the Saba way instead of Harrington playing his game, Harrington started to loop balls and get into long rallies with the more solid Saba. It was a smartly played match by Saba.

3:56 Michael Redlicki def Gerardo Meza 6-4 6-4
Redlicki is 6'7 but does not play like a big man. Does not have particularly big shots. Meza tried moving him around and getting him off balance but Redlicki was surprisingly agile while moving. Redlicki led 4-0 in the 2nd set and looked like a run away. But Meza dug in and was able to push Redlicki to 6-4 and got close to a break that would have made it 5-5. Here is Redlicki serving out the match.

    4: 89 Chris Mengel def Dom Maden 7-6(5) 6-1
This match had many long long rallies. Maden was playing miles behind the baseline and Mengel was content to stay way back as well. Mengel got an early break and led the whole set. But Maden hung in there and got a break when Mengel served for it at 5-4, here is the game where Mengel attempts to serve it out and gets broken. After getting broken Mengel got frustrated and at one point after losing the point turned around and said "I should be beating this kid 6-0 6-0!" No wonder he is always that frustrated, if he thinks he should be beating people 0 and 0 each match. The tiebreak was close and had several long rallies. Maden made some poor decisions late in the tiebreak that cost him the set. Here is the 1st set tiebreak. The 2nd set Megel rode the momentum of the first set tiebreak and pushed Maden around the court, really taking control of the set.

    5: 73 Raphael Hemmeler def Zac Rigsby 6-1 6-0
Hemmeler is a very good player, he has beaten Rossi of Kentucky this year. This was a mis-match in overall talent. Hemmeler did everything right.

6: Jason Tahir def Austin Ansari 6-3 7-6(6)
Well Ansari finally loses a dual match. Ansari led 4-0 in the 2nd set, so I was thinking it would go to a super-tiebreak. But Tahir fought back. Tahir was a unique way of hitting his forehand. He cocks his wrist and swings with his wrist cocked creating a shot that is flat and has a bit of side spin, I like his forehand overall. Ansari wasn't allowed to attack Tahir from the whole court because of Tahir's powerful forehand that kept Ansari back pedaling rather than attacking. Here is the 2nd set tiebreak from 3-3 on. (For some reason it's sideways so turn your laptop sideways or something)

I'm pretty concerned about UNC tomorrow. They will look at this match as a big chance to get much needed help to their ranking. They broke the bad streak by beating GT Friday and probably gained a little confidence. They have a weak 6 so we should for sure win there. Yannick Maden lost to Hess-Olesen in the fall in a tight 3 setter. Vick beat Harrington in the fall in a tight 3 setter as well. If Rigsby stays at 5 he will face Steiro who he lost to last year in 2. William Parker against Dom Maden leans UNC's way. It's going to be a battle, no doubt about it. We definitely cannot afford a loss tomorrow with UVA coming up next.

for some goofy reason the match is at 11am tomorrow. Primetime I guess.
