So I had a match a 1st team of another club in my league, they are a decent side we are only our clubs 2nd team our first team has some national players and 2 guys that have played futures our 2nd team is in a lower division but being the 2nd team there are lots of guys not good enough to break into the 4 man 1st team.

So I had 3 decent players for our match but I was struggling for a good 4th so I messaged my coach, to see if he could help me and find a decent 4th player... next thing I know, he turns up and plays not to be fair he is way too good for these guys he is 40 but was a county player but technically he is not able to make the 1st team regularly and without a strong partner.

I got a lot of criticism from one particular teammate saying that picking my coach was below the belt and that if he was the opposition he wouldn't be happy and that it is costing people a place in the side.

If you look at the results, although my coach and his partner did better than us it was only marginal he and his partner beat their 1st pair 6-4 6-4 and the 2nd pair 6-0 6-0 my partner and I beat the 1st pair 6-3 6-4 and the 2nd pair 6-0 6-4.

From what you guys have read, did I do anything wrong in playing the head coach and does my teammate have a point or was it sour grapes from him?

Who was this "coach" John Mcenroe? If I had him on my roster I'd play him every time. Offer your bytching team members a glass of vintage rose' and I'm sure they'll forgive you and this scandal will soon become history at ye' ol' club.

You have to learn to use a comma before I can respond to that post... It makes my brain hurt to try and decipher all that.

Ask your team-mate which team the coach should play for if he can't get in the first team?

The club should be thankful you've got a coach who's willing to turn out for your teams.

I agree with this. I love his attitude, he is not a ringer as we have such a strong 1st team he cannot always get in as they are younger and fitter he has not played many 2nd team games but he knew we needed to win this one and he has not played for the 1st all season.

He has won his county singles and doubles titles in the past so he has played to a very high level.

Nothing wrong from you in this situation. You were struggling for a 4th, it's not like you displaced a friend to make way for your coach, right? I need to get my coach out, he's formerly ranked and still in great shape. I need him to beat a friend of mine for *****s and giggles who is an exceptional amateur player and constantly has me on the run.

If it is a competitive team then you need to play your strongest team so that you can advance to the playoffs assuming that you have playoffs but if it is just a social team then you should probably give everyone a chance after all this is supposed to be a fun hobby and nobody is going to wimbledon.

Maybe you should have a team meeting to discuss this openly because it seems there has been some confusion among the team and some think you should be competitive but others feel like it should be more casual but you could also have a ladder where the teammates play each other to see who is strongest but even that has disadvantages because people will just say that they played great but their partner dragged them down so maybe you need to have a kind of round robin where people swap around partners so you can know for sure who is dragging down whom.

Good point! The issue is.. Our first team has always been strong we are top of division 1.

The 2nd team was forgotten about and so the coach put me in charge of it he wanted to give guys a chance that wouldn't otherwise get to play competitive but ultimately told me he wanted us to get promoted (we are in division 3 only the top team gets promoted) we are currently 2nd but a couple big wins in our last two matches and promotion is still possible.

I think he believes that if we can get our 2nd team to division 2 it will be a good platform for guys who would make a 1st team in other clubs but not ours and get them match ready.. I feel he only played because he knew we needed a big win and still have a chance of promotion. For example this Sunday he can't play but has told me to pick this 17 year old kid. Turns out he hasn't played first tram yet only because he hasn't been available but he trains full time at an academy and is shadowing the head coach and learning the ropes...

I have told the guys it is nothing personal and it is not a closed shop but ultimately we want promotion and I explained why our head coach as good as he is, is not a ringer technically.

Hey since you guys are from the UK, you might appreciate this story. Last week I played in the over 40 sectionals 4.5 level here in Texas, but you can have two 5.0 level players on the roster. Anyway, we played against Barry Mills, who is apparently Alan Mills' brother. I don't know how good he was when he was younger, but this guy was the best damn doubles player I've played against, incredible. I was a lot of fun to play him even though we got killed.

Interesting, can you tell us more about his game?

I was at an Alan Mills run tournament a month or so back. His brother must be in his 60s or 70s?

I would like to see what my coach looks like playing competitively. I get the impression hes pretty burnt out on tennis for himself, he's happy to help his players but I think the game itself is pretty tedious to him now.

Probably wouldn't ask him to play on my team though, ringer for sure.

FWIW, his rating reflects your observation. While my ratings don't have him at risk of being DQ'd during the year, he is very close to being bumped up to 5.5, so no shame in losing to him.

You just field your strongest team as long as its within the rules. If people dont like it tell them to contact the county office so that its not within the rules.
