Congrats to the Women's team on winning the 16th National title. GOAT of all college tennis programs in history of tennis. I think we have found a new Legend in the making in Mallory Burdette. Similar playing style to earlier version of Lindsey Davenport, Mallory has a impressive power game and could carry the Stanford team to many more titles. Way to go Cardinal....:):):)

Hilary Barte is far better IMO. To be honest, none of these players (except for Barte possibly) will do much on the pro tour (should they choose that route).

Isn't Hillary like 5'3" and a S/V player? Thos lefty...alas with no serve.
Not the norm for WTA styles.

She actually had a decent enough serve, it doesn't get attacked as much as you would think. She reminds of Rochus with a two-hander, scrappy and yet can hit some huge shots (I do like her forehand a lot).

I watched her lose in the Ojai finals, and her serve left her. She didn't get the wide serve, had little pace to the forehand, and looked lost against a big hitter.
Similar to Klahn in his men's finals, they were allcourters with basically NO weapons, and depended purely on hitting close to lines to win a point.
Their opponents, OTOH, could just blast one up the middle to set up a weak return, and then put the ball away.
Not saying small and nimble is a handicap, but like in boxing, the big guy does get some heavyweight shots in, and all those little annoying little guy punches do little more than enrage the big guy.
SugarRayLeonard might have been the best welterweight in his prime, but Ali or Forman, Frazier or Tommy the Hitman, would destroy him in a fight.
No substitute for having real weapons.

The umpires made sure Stanford won this one (ie: calling a foot-fault against that Florida girl on set point).

She's got a pretty big serve. But leave it to LeeD to tell it like it isn't.

Yeah, her serve is big for a midget who's weak!
PattySnyder would wipe her wimpy serve off the map.
Nobody that doesn't serve over 100 has a "big" serve.
All the women, since they were juniors 14 years old, practiced against MEN's serves. Seeing that puffball moseying in at such slow speed is pure joy for anyone in her playing level.

Got to see a little of the clinching match on t.v. the girl for Stanford played clutch at the end to break and hold. Really impressive for a freshmen, she handled the pressure so well.

Of course, if I had to face her game, I'd be running side to side, panting my lungs dry, sweating into my shoes, and looking for a wheelchair.
But I"m only a falling 4.0. She faces real 5.5 women, like solid 4.5 mens, and as such, her serve is basically weak except for the wide slice, which everyone knows is coming.
No doubt she's good. Just not much chance of cracking the top 100 women pros. Those Euros and S.Americans can run all day, deliver topspin doses high, deep, low, or angled all day, and eat up the short players easily.

Doubtful, she's gotta work on her movement. Otherwise, she will NEVER break the top 250 in the world...

Not that I typically defend Fedace, but I don't think he meant she will be the next Lindsay Davenport or even on the tour, just a legend at Stanford.

Since she's only a freshman I have to agree that she has big things ahead of her. She has some firepower and I agree with the Mal Washington that if she could just cut her errors in half she would have won easily against Boonstra. On top of that, if she works on her speed/movement she could be really dangerous.

By the way - love how they kept replaying her sister's tackle. Hilarious.

It is Called the Tackle of the Century at Stanford. But anyway, she won't be able to cut out the fat, it is just the way she is built. I rarely see overweight College tennis player become thin as they go thru the years. Lindsey Davenport was able to do it cause she had the top trainers in the world working with her.
Beside, in college, Mallory is so good that she really doesn't need to become thin like Davenport did. but in the Pro tour, her lack of movement will be exploited for sure...

Obviously can do well on fast courts, will be run to death on slower stuff. Nice she's got the gumption to take it early inside the baseline.

Yeah I thnk other teams are now going to adopt Stanford's practice of watching Adam Sandler's "The Water Boy" for prematch inspiration.

Could be, but she looked pretty good pretty at the Ojai's, which she lost in straight sets, I believe.

I agree, Actually Hillary Barte is the Biggest hitter in the team and yet the smallest player. She hits bigger than Mallory Burdette. Barte proves that you don't have to be 6'0" to hit big shots.

Stanford will not lose now for the next 4+ years with Ahn and Gibbs coming in. I am happy for them and they deserve it, but now women's tennis is going to be even more boring than ever. Less than eight teams over the last 30+ years to win the crown and with 8 fulls, they will always keep recycling...also proof that you can just roll the balls out and win. Fitness, coaching, and training hard become completely irrelevant. They stayed out of Indoors, played a mediocre schedule (outside of the Pac-10, which was down anyway), had a noticeably overweight girls on their team, and still managed to win. I guess it also helped that they had a nice draw and the bottom left half of the draw was the weakest. ND in the semis was pretty amazing. Tough break for UF, as Will had not lost a singles dual all year and Boonstra is probably the nicest kid on their team. Oh well, on to another decade of Stanford women's titles. Maybe someone can cheat and bring in 6 pros to beat them.

Curious, other College programs have been able to strengthen thier MEN's team with Over-sea talents from Europe and India and so on. This really hurt Stanford's Men's team whom refuses to recruit from foreign countries.

But for some reason this has not been the case with Women. Stanford still dominate with American talents and with all the Foreign talents coming into Women's NCAA programs, they have NOT been able to over-come Stanford program. Very Strange, Indeed.......

The reason being Fedace, is that (in general) most foreign female recruits will probably be somewhat in the tank by NCAA's. In general, in a team format, foreign girls will not give their best effort, unless the TRULY respect their coach, or they have a players' coach who lets them do what they want. The closest example of a women's team of all foreigners that has had a shot to win is Baylor. They have 6 foreign girls in the top 6. They had a great shot to beat Stanford, as they would have won, if they didn't chump the dubs point. BUT, the girls on their team are far too overweight and out of shape, and that really hurt them down the stretch...especially because it was so damn hot and humid in Athens. So, it is still possible to win in women's tennis if you get the top 10 Americans, but it's getting tougher. On the men's side, I think now you HAVE to have a mix of top foreign and American players to win. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Illinois must have been the last men's team to win without foreigners...although I don't know how you would classify Delic and Ram.

That's a lie. Wire is from London, England and Morrissey is from Dublin, Ireland. Both of those players would be considered foreign, because they're not American.

You're right in that Stanford does not absolutely refuse to recruit foreigners, but it's very well known that Stanford talent has traditionally been homegrown American talent (i.e. Bryan Brothers, Jared Palmer, Alex O'Brien, Alex Kim, Ryan Wolters, etc.)

I don't think college players use PJ's. They get discounts on these rackets but it isn't free like the Pros get. It just goes to show you that these Youtek Prestige frames are pretty good rackets. Many college players have switched to it.
