Here is an e-mail by my French colleague Jean-Marie about Connors's special events.
Has anyone some answers about the missing results (see the red characters) or some corrections to propose ?
    Thank you :

    Bonjour Cher Carlo,
    Jean-Marie.

The results for the following tournaments are missing from Jean-Marie's list:

1970 San Diego Championships (9-15 November)
1982 Montreal Molson Light Challenge Cup (29 September - 3 October)
1983 Toronto Molson Challenge (8-13 February)

They're mentioned on the French Wikipedia: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Connors, but it has only the final results.

Also, 1990 Forest Hills WCT Tournament of Champions (20-26 August) is missing. Here're the results:

    1R : Bye

    Thank you for the answers.

BTURNER : (Los Angeles Southern California Championships (CA, USA) may, 3-9 : F Pancho Gonzales d. Connors 6-4 4-6 6-1).

Connors also played Gonzales in the 1971 PSW final, Sep 20-26 : Gonzales again the winner 36 63 63.
In 1973 apparently (according to the ITF & ATP sites) Connors met Pancho twice with these times Connors the winner, Columbus July30-Aug 5, QF 67 63 63 and PSW again Sep 17-23, 2nd round (R32) 76 63.
So to date the win-loss head-to-head record is 2-2 (2-0 Pancho in 71 and 2-0 Jimbo in 73)

I tried to update the data of the huge research done by Colussi .
The work of Colussi was excellent , my low-level but I tried to add missing information thanks to the internet .
There are still some results , but my little work ends here .

I added the titles also challenge matches in order to have a picture of all , the exhibitions / challenges / invitational tournaments unclassified by ATP , but only won by the American .

    In summary we have :
    1 ) challenge matches
    2 ) 8 -men tournament formula - Masters ( 2 round robin , semifinals + 2 , + final )
    3 ) Tournaments real ( Beckenham , Louisville , Stowe )

    Conclusions

The research I think it dutiful to better frame the 70s and 80s and the career of Connors, which I think is the central figure in the history of the Open Era because it meas with Laver and Agassi, through Nastase and Becker.

I do not think all the hits in the events no-ATP modifying the career Connors, although some events are considered significant.

    I see to list them:

    1) Challenge matches won in Las Vegas vs. Laver and Newcombe (the following two events and won against Orantes Nastase not have the same impact).

    2) Challenges matches vs Borg (the last performances of Swedish)

    3) great titols between all those evidence no-ATP (Wikipedia)
    - 2 Rosemont (Chicago) Michelob Light Challenge,
    - 2 Molson Invitational (Toronto / Montreal)
    - 2 North Miami Beach Nastase-Hamptons Invitational
    - 1 Frejus Carre d'As Invitational (great summer tournament in French Riviera - Cote d'Azur)
    - 1 Melbourne Mazda Super Challenge (good australian event),
    - 4 Tokyo Suntory Cup, the best performance in 4-men after Boca Raton,

I thought I had finished with the upgrades but then I found a Spanish site that gave me more information. Many.

1979 Challenge match Sao Paulo (Brasil) april, 4
    + Hank Pfister 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-1 (4 april 1979)

1979 Rio de Janeiro (BRA) ... he lacked the 1R
    1R: Eddie Dibbs W 6-3 6-4
    F: Guillermo Vilas W 6-3 6-4 6-3

Buenos Aires Indoor Cup - Copa Clarif (ARG) ... lacked the 1R
    1R: Guillermo Vilas W 6-2 6-2
    F: Victor Pecci W 6-2 1-6 6-2

    1980

Connors, Borg, Gerulaitis and Panatta did a mini-tour of Europe participating in two exhibitions:

    1) Copenhagen (exhibition USA vs Europe) ... not a tournament but an exhibition
    + Adriano Panatta 6-4 6-4
    + Bjorn Borg 6-4 6-2

    2) Braun Tennis Cup Munich (GER) ... a quadrangular tournament
    1R: Adriano Panatta W
    F: Vitas Gerulaitis W 6-1 6-7 6-4

1980 Tokyo Suntory Cup (Japan) april, 12-13 ... lacked the score victory in 1R.
    1R: Roscoe Tanner W 6-4 6-2
    F: John McEnroe W 7-5 6-3

1983 Bank of Tulsa Oklahoma Tennis Classic ... I was missing matches of round robin:
    RR: Brian Teacher W 6-4 6-1
    RR: Dick Stockton W 6-2 6-3
    RR: Shlomo Glickstein W 6-2 6-0
    F: Roscoe Tanner W 6-4 6-3

1983 Sun City Bophuthatswana Tennis Challenge (RSA) ... is a round robin tournament, there is no end, Connors beat Lendl in the last match but not a final.
    RR: Kevin Curren W 4-6 6-2 6-2
    RR: Johan Kriek W 6-2 0-6 6-3
    RR: Ivan Lendl W 7-5 7-6
    Jimmy Connors Winner

1983 Newport Beach Tennis Club High Stakes ... lacked the score of 1R
    1R: Eliot Teltscher W 6-4 7-6
    SF: Mats Wilander W 7-5 6-4
    F: Tim Mayotte W 6-3 6-4 6-2

1985 Bank of Tulsa Oklahoma Tennis Classic (OK, USA) ... lacked the score of the RR
    RR: John Lloyd W 6-4 6-4
    RR: Ben Testerman W 6-7 6-3 6-2
    RR: Gene Mayer W 7-5 6-1
    F: Yannick Noah W 6-4 6-4

    Conclusion of this post
The tournaments take off Connors compared to ATP & no-ATP Wikipedia (149) are
    1) Asuncion 1979 (because he retired in the final)
    2) Napa 1980 (challenge match vs Tanner).

    Are 147.

    1977 :
Challenge match vs Nastase – Puerto Rico (7 march 1977)
    + 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-3 (not 7-5 6-4)

There are only scores / players
    - 1R Beaver Creek 83
    - 1R Amelia Islands 86
Then the job is finished .

But these three can not find them .

Continuous research ( on the newspapers of the time over the Internet ) the results of special events won by the American .

It does not change the career of Connors but I think it is important to understand the no-ATP tournaments that he, Mac , Borg , Lendl played in the 70s and 80s .

Louisville International Classic was in 1980 at a tournament in which 7draws Connors firstround bye , then :
    SF : Pat Dupre W 7-6 3-6 6-1
    F : Eddie Dibbs W 6-2 6-3

    In 1985 he won a Challenge match vs Curren in Durban - Southafrica : + 2-6 7-6 7-6 6-4

1986 Amelia Island Du Pont All American Tennis Championships , not beat Dave Pate in semis but the firts round, in semis beating Jimmy Arias , could not find the score:
    1R : Dave Pate W 6-4 7-6
    S : Jimmy Arias W
    F : Aaron Krickstein W 4-6 6-2 6-0

In conclusion I can not find opponents:
    - 1R Beaver Creek Kiva 1983

It could be his stat allowed to get a bye directly into the semifinals .

    Considerations tournaments no-ATP 70s and 80s
    1) The Invitationals in practice did not exist until 1975, the few who had played an insignificant value
    2) The system from 1968 to 1972 was divided into two circuits, well separated Grand Prix and WCT, only the US Open all participating
    3) In 1972, it adds a smaller circuit organized by Riordan and named IPA, in which they played only two of the top 10: Nastase and Connors
    4) You can not consider the tournament circuit IPA- Riordan as Invitationals because they gave ATP points and gave points to the circuit IPA but they look like
    5) Riordan & Connors give boost to putting exhibitions against the ATP / Grand Prix / WCT
    6) Connors challenge before Laver and Newcombe then to Las Vegas in two challenge matches in 1975 of capital importance for the future development
    7) In contrast to what is common to think, Connors attended a few special events in the 70s
    8) Borg instead participated in many special events and won them almost all between 1976 and 1979, almost all 4draws, the most important in Boca Raton and Tokyo
    9) Borg is very distracting with Invitationals, especially in 1978, loses sight of the ATP, they will do the same Connors and Lendl in the 80s
    10) In the 70s they were particularly in demand in the Invitationals 4draws, semifinals two more final.
    11) In the 80s changes the shape of the invitational by 4draws to 8draws formula ATP Finals, become real tournaments.
    12) There is also the formula with normal seeding knockout, 8draws.
    13) While Borg was the king 70s, Lendl becomes the king 80s although Connors and Mac win many special events.
    14) In Antwerp, Rosemont and Montreal / Toronto are held major events.
    15) Borg if he had participated in any ATP tournament in more instead of invitational probably would have been number 1 ATP in 1978.
    16) Connors had he participated in any ATP tournament in more instead of invitational probably would have been number 1 in 1982 and perhaps in 1983.
    17) Lendl has won many well-distributed, if he attended more tournaments ATP tournaments ATP would win many more

    Conclusion:
Borg in the 70s, in the 80s Lendl and Connors in both decades dedicated themselves to no-atp Invitationals because much more profitable and less tiring. Their successes overall are not objectively be considered because half are not relevant and only a few titles are important but we must consider that gicavano in another era, where the players were playing every week in the Grand Prix circuit (or WCT ) or Invitationals, which is why they have won so many titles and have won more titles if they had focused only on the main circuit (Grand Prix + WCT)

"The exhibitions are ruining to tennis. I'm dismayed over what happened to the clay court championships to Indianapolis.
This is the tournament that always ranked second only to the French as an important clay court event.
All the great champions have played is Indianapolis built a new multi-million dollars 10.000 set stadium.
And what happens? Not one of the top six players showed up.
A big clump of the top men players (Lendl, Wilander, Connors, Noah...) were competing instead in a 300.000 dollars 8-men exhibition series at near Newport Beach".
Jack Kramer (ATP boss), 9 august 1983

You are addressing a big methodological problem for evaluating the 70s, the question of invitational events or exhibitions. The overlook isn't always correct. The WCT series of 20 tournaments started in 1971, the Grand Prix series of the ILTF in 1970, so the division between ILTF and WCT started really in 1971. Earlier in 1968-1970, we had NTL, WCT, combined pro tournaments, open tournaments and pure amateur tournaments. Most are not represented in the ATP stats section. Some four man tournaments in open era were quite important, because they were played for big prize money for the winner and were televized to a great public. I think of the BBC 2 tournament at Wembley in 1968 and 69, which had one of the biggest prize money then, and of the Pepsi Grand Slam, which was a hard fought affair in the late 70s. I like to divide events into invitationals for real prize money and exhibitions with fixed appearance money. I think, all those non ATP Events are to be closely studied, how much they were really competitive, which means for real prize money.

Given that it is difficult to compare the eras , the division imposed by the ATP since 1973 I think is correct , and that is:
1 ) ATP ( including WCT and IPA ) were not by invitation but participants were called up according to the charts ( GP , WCT , IPA .. )
2 ) no- ATP tournaments ( named Invitationals ) are those where the tournament organizer invited those who wanted to .

Sometimes it happened that some tournaments 2 ) were much more important than one 1) that could be kind Master250, but they should not be considered in the calculation of the ATP . ... because invitational..

In tournaments 1 ) the ATP has considered :
    1 ) Pepsi Grand Slam although 4draws ,
2 ) Challenge Cup WCT and WCT TOC although Invitationals

ATP considers all no-invitational tournaments except those organized by ATP & WCT.

What the ATP accepts or not, is a different problem. Some posters here, including Lucio and others, have written to Greg Sharko and The ATP at Ponte Vedra and triggered the inclusion of some invitationals on the ATP stats side over the last couple of years, which were not recognized before, like the WCT tournaments of Champions. The recognition of the ATP was always arbitrary, every WCT tournaments was a sort of invitational, because a select group of players played in there, with some fillers from outside. For the first years of open era, the ATP stats are simply incomplete, with many important pro and open events missing. I think, even the very first open tournament 1968 at Bournemouth was included only a couple of years ago.
I think, the bigger problem is still the clear distinction between invitationals for prize money, which we should use for the evaluation of the top Players of the 70s and early 80s, and pure exhibitions, with much less competitive worth.

It is not easy to retrieve information about exhibitions 70 and 80, but you can consider this:
    1) the titles won ATP is not right to implement them with Invitationals
    2) the Invitationals are however considered separately and if possible divided in two, between performances not relevant and important performances
    3) does not distort the careers of players but they are historically significant because they are a real circuit apart, stronger players they preferred the Australian Open !!
    4) changing a bit 'the outcome of the year-end number one in a few years.

McEnroe won 27 Invitationals including 12 tournaments 8 draws
In my opinion 6 are relevant:
    1981-85-87 Challenge of champions
    1983-86-88 ECC Antwerp

Borg won 37 Invitationals including 9 in 8 draws
In my opinion 8 are relevant:
    1976-77 Hilton Head
    1978-82 Suntory Cup
    1979 Milan
    1979 Frankfurt
    1979 Holland Roxi Int.
    1972 Sidney Akai

Lendl 57 invitational including 37 to 8 draws
In my opinion 13 are relevant:
    • 1984-1985 Suntory Cup
    • 1981 Milan
    • 1982-84 Molson
    • 1982-84-86-87-89 Antwerp ECC
    • 1983-86-88 Challenge of Champions

Connors invitational 46 (not 49 as claimed by Wikipedia)
In my opinion 12 are relevant:
    • 1980-81-83-86 Tokyo Suntory Cup (Japan)
    • 1979 Frejus Carre d'As Invitational (FRA)
    • 1982-1984 Rosemont Michelob Light Challenge
    • 1982-1983 Montreal Molson Invitational
    • 1982-1983 North Miami Beach Nastase-Hamptons Invitational
    • 1983 Newport Beach Tennis Club High Stakes

In addition to these four Challenge matches played in Las Vegas vs. Laver and Newcombe (1975), Orantes (1976) and Nastase (1977)
