Cramping in Matches

    I have been having a problem. During matches I almost always cramp up. I am not out of shape and am one of the more athletic tennis players. I eat great and always hydrate extremely well before tennis matches. Even in the winter I cramp (I live in Florida).

    Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can not cramp?

    Perhaps you need to do more dynamic stretching before practice and not sit down as long on change overs

    Do you also cramp in practice? If yes, nutrition and more fitness.
    If no, take a chill pill.

    Gatorade is my best anti cramping medicine on court.

    I never cramp in practice.

    What would be the benefits of taking shorter changeovers and dynamic stretching before playing?

    If you never cramp in practice, but often in matches, it means the stress of a match forcing you to try harder than normal is causing an overload on your legs, or whatever is cramping.
    Take LONGER changeovers, and light stretching, but play your points with an added dosage of SMARTS, and less application of pure stoke. Don't run full speed for lost cause balls. DO hit smarter and make the other guy run.

    I have that issue and lately it seems to have been solved. You have to replace electrolytes on the court with gatorade and also water with an electrolyte mixture put in there. Also bring mustard packages as they help prevent a cramp.

    Check your diet and make sure you have enough salt.

    Always better to see a doc, make him rich, raise our costs of health care, use up lots of your time, than to get free advice.
    I guarantee you won't cramp if you hit the first availible ball for a winner attempt. There, problems solved, don't give me any money.

    Agree with andfor and will add a physical therapist that works with tennis players as an option. You don't have to be in pain to make an appt, they see a lot of people for preventative medicine/advice. They really understand the muscle/tendon issues, better than a lot of orthopedic types do. I find them more consultative by in general. Also, our elite athlete replaced gatorade years ago with other options that have way less sugar and hydrate better. A PT can guide you on that as well.     Realize that both poster's 8 and 10 work in the health care system, and would like nothing less to inject more of your hard earned $$$$$ away from you into their pockets.
    And we should all go see a doc, a specialist even, when we bump our toes on a chair, because....you never know, you might be helping to take one more rich doctor out of the homeless rankings.....

    There are low calorie Gatorade options but they don't agree with my stomach.

    The article posted by andfor is correct. Most of cramping in tennis is the result of dehydration, loss of electrolytes. Has to do with the amount you sweat and the saltiness of your sweat. Gatorade is weak for electrolyte replacement. There are powders out there with up to 8 times the electrolytes. Some players also use salt tablets, but you have to be VERY careful with that and know exactly what you are doing. There is a lot of good information on the web from reliable sources. It is your responsibility to educate yourself.

    I should hope you would realize, my post was in jest....with a little jab at you guys just for fun.
    Prevention. Reaction. Should we wait to crash our cars before we apply the brakes? Or should we slow down and avoid the crash in the first place?
    All food for thought.
    If the opponent is running us back and forth, and we're tiring out, should we run faster, drink more good stuff, get in better shape? Or should we hit better shots so we run our opponent's?

    `besides all the great advice already given .. try this next time you go play a tournament .. take in a lot of protein the night before.. eat steaks,meat and all those good things to feed more protein to your muscles ... don't eat meat the day of the match ..
